A Story of Hope: Meet Robyn Atwater

To have hope means to have a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. In this series, we are highlighting women who possessed hope and trust that the desires of their hearts would happen

In 2010, the founder of CURLDAZE, Robyn Atwater, discovered her love for natural hair care through her own trial and tribulation. One morning, she woke up to discover a significant amount of hair on her pillow. Throughout the day, her hair continued to come out, and she knew she had to jump to action.

As an Economist, Robyn is a trained high-level researcher, so she began to study Ayurvedic remedies to regrow her hair. Robyn created her own hair oil blend and began to see her hair flourish. Through the success of her growth oil, Robyn filled her kitchen cabinets with hair care ingredients and embarked on a journey of making her own hair products from curl cream to gel.

In 2015, Robyn began to grow her now successful YouTube and Instagram @CurlDaze pages and began developing the CURLDAZE hair care line. Robyn also invented a new styling technique called the Horseshoe Method that millions of people have viewed on YouTube.

Featured in Essence Magazine, Black Hair Magazine, BET, The Real, Groupon Style Blog, and nominated as a Bronner Brothers Lifestyle/Trendsetter Influencer of the Year, Robyn’s journey and mission have always been to touch as many souls as possible and help people embrace and love themselves one curl at a time.

What Inspired your start in entrepreneurship?

Several life experiences impacted my journey. Every day after coming home from work, I started working with my hair after experiencing significant hair loss; trying different things until I found my winning combination. Then I started filming myself and posting on YouTube because I thought that others might benefit from what I was doing. I started getting so many questions and comments, and at that point, I saw there was a need for what I was doing, and I knew this was what I had to do: help meet the needs of those that wanted the help. So, I decided to create my own line.

What obstacles have you had to overcome to get where you are today?

This biggest obstacle was I had to handle working a full-time job while simultaneously working on my dream. That was exhausting.

Then, adding a newborn into the mix, there were definitely times when I didn’t know if I would be able to do it all. By the grace of God, I was able to push through and turn my dream into a reality.

What message of hope do you have for upcoming entrepreneurs?

Stay focused. Always remind yourself that you have what it takes to fulfill your dreams and meet your goals. Believe in your strengths, your abilities, and your talents, then use all of that to make things happen for “you”.

What are your top 3 go-to songs for motivation to keep going after your goals?

What is your definition of a pretty woman who hustles?

Beauty is from within, and it is demonstrated in a variety of ways. It’s demonstrated in how you treat those around you. It’s demonstrated in the decisions that you make and how you care for yourself. To live this life is a “hustle”.

So… a pretty woman that hustles, is a woman who cares for herself as a valued human being and makes moves to make life as good for others as she makes for herself. That is her hustle and will, and as time goes on, will be her legacy.
