Together Against Bullying with Tara Lynn Townes

Tara Lynn Townes – CEO of TBB Enterprises, is an impassioned speaker, author, motivator, inventor and developmental therapist. With a Masters in Family and Human Development from Arizona State University, she has over twenty years of seasoned experience working with women, children, and families as a whole. With a B.S. in Child Development, and many years of professional life coaching, and counseling, Tara is passionate about being a positive example of love and acceptance to all mankind.

As a philanthropist and mentor of the Women’s Welfare to Work program and founder of Tiny Be Mighty, Tara was recognized by the California and Connecticut State Senate and Congress for her participation and work. When her son Corey was diagnosed with a condition known as Achondroplasia or “Dwarfism”, there was little doubt in Tara’s mind that her son was born with a mighty purpose.

Tara has embarked on a personal endeavor to raise awareness about dwarfism and to offer a resolution for bullying. Thus, she invented a new cutting-edge App called Bullying Buddy, to serve as a solution to bullying and adolescent suicide. Lastly, her life’s creed is whatever we put in the universe will never return voided, so we should make it our best!

What inspired you to start Bullying Buddy Consulting?

My son was bullied for having dwarfism to the point of no return. Because of his experience,

I wrote a children’s book and founded a nonprofit. the primary purpose of a student bullying survey is to identify and quantify a number of factors–rates of bullying, student and staff attitudes towards bullying, different types of bullying occurring, and more—in order to address them.

During this journey, I began to unfold children who have committed suicide as a result of bullying. This was disheartening put out me in touch with the calling God had on me. I began through my organization; I began to consult and now it’s my full-time passion. Hence, the birth of the “Bullying Buddy” App and “Be Brave” curriculum came to life to save lives!

What are the biggest challenges you face as an entrepreneur?

I would have to say funding and marketing. Entrepreneurs face many challenges in today’s ultra-competitive business world. entrepreneurs also have more resources than ever before to tackle those problems. I love working for myself.

What does your current self-care routine look like for you?

Self-care means really listening to your body, taking moments to check in, intentionally tuning in to the thoughts going on in your mind, and challenging your behaviors and belief systems if things feel out of alignment in your life. waking up early, praying, meditating, working out, baths, and reading a good book.

What are some of the most common questions you receive about bullying and what your company stands for?

What are the signs of bullying, what are the types of bullying, how do we get the kids to speak up, Have I ever been bullied; how do we keep them safe? How do we heal the bully?

We raise awareness about dwarfism, and we offer a resolution for bullying through my App and Curriculum.

How do you hope to continue growing your brand over the next couple of years?

By continuing national and worldwide exposure, do motivational speaking and provide my help services throughout the world- consulting, expert witness and training services, and strategic development.

Can you name a female entrepreneur that inspires you?

Oprah Winfrey – is an inspiring entrepreneur for many reasons, she is a hero for her dedication, generosity, and her attributes to inspire others. because not only did she want to accomplish her dreams but she wanted others to achieve their goals and follow in her footsteps.

What is your definition of a Pretty Woman Who Hustles?

My definition of a Pretty Woman -Who Hustles is one who works hard to achieve her dreams and goals in life. one who is confident, strong, and inspirational but one who knows that beauty begins inside and her inside creates what she wants on the outside. That’s true hustle!

Jennifer Takagi – Intuitive Leadership Coach Shares Key to Entrepreneurial Success

Jennifer Takagi is the Founder of Tagaki Consulting. She helps entrepreneurs and women find the clarity and confidence to follow their most aligned path for the highest level of success. Together Jennifer and her clients focus on the mindset shifts necessary to tap into your purpose-driven life, create the space for more income and impact, put your desires in the driver’s seat, and transform your life and business – from one lacking abundance – to one of FREEDOM and FULFILLMENT. Alignment. Attraction. Abundance. It’s all yours.

“For 30 years, I worked in the housing industry. As an “other duty as assigned” I traveled all over the country training thousands of leaders on how to get the most out of their teams and careers. And I loved the work until I stopped denying what I’d known for a long time—something was missing. I took a leap of faith and retired early to pursue my dream of sharing the lessons I’d learned along the way, helping others bypass some of the hurdles I had cleared.”

Jennifer has trained over 10,000, had 5 Best Selling Books on Amazon, launched a podcast with over 17,000 unique downloads, been nominated for a People’s Choice Award, and started a home-based baking business, Pie Love You Desserts.

You have entrepreneurs and women find the clarity and confidence to follow their most aligned path for the highest level of success. Share your background.

As an entrepreneur, I followed all the strategies and guidance given to me. I found some success and some fulfillment, but something was missing. I could never seem to achieve and maintain a certain level of success. I had been on a path of spiritual growth for myself, never planning on sharing it with anyone, much less the world! I FINALLY had the courage to share my gifts within a networking group – offering free sessions. The slots I opened up were snatched up in less than an hour. That was the most success I had enjoyed in quite a while. The first client session ended with her asking if she could give me a testimonial! I knew I had found my lane! I discovered that my gift was to reveal to clients what they already knew, deep down, basically giving them permission to follow their dream. That is the clarity piece. That clarity lends itself to stepping onto the right path.

My journey started with learning Akashic Records. When I signed up for the course, I had no idea that I would be trained to read other people’s records and walk away with a certification as a Soul Care Coach. Akashic Records are the messages on your soul. In some religions (Judaism and Christianity), it is referred to as the Book of Life. Deep seeded yearnings on the client’s soul are revealed. Often, put into words where they hadn’t been before. Once I am able to speak the idea/dream/yearning out loud, the clients often feel a deep sense of peace and knowing. Knowing that they either need to make a shift or that they truly are on the right path. An opportunity to learn Holy Fire Reiki was presented and I jumped on it! As a level 2 Reiki Practitioner, I am able to clear or settle the energy stirred up during the Akaskic Records reading. And THEN … I discovered the Emotion Code practice of releasing trapped emotions from past events that hold you from where you want, desire, and deserve to be! This amazing practice led me to the Body Code which helps create alignment within the physical and spiritual body to allow the body’s innate ability to heal to kick in. Neither practice is a replacement for professional help but rather supports professional help when that is what is needed. I am now a certified Emotion Code and Body Code Practitioner.

Clients have a session with me which is more of an experience that leads to an overall transformation. It is magical and witchy woo!

How are you helping clients to freedom and fulfillment by diving headfirst into the world of connecting them with their intuition?

Once a client has the experience of hearing the messages in their soul, they begin to trust their own abilities to listen and hear. Typically, we refuse to listen to that inner voice because we don’t believe that it could possibly be true. We push it aside. Swear it can’t mean anything. I’ve always gotten messages from above, actual words. I believe they are messages from God. Typically, they appear in particularly stressful times. The most dramatic event was one morning when I was sick and needed to stay home. But, I had a lot of work to do. A gentle, kind voice told me to stay home and take care of myself. A very judgmental, harsh voice demanded that I go to work. I compromised and decided to call in and say I would be in at noon. I did. A few short hours later, the Oklahoma City Murray Federal Building was bombed. That was my building. 35 co-workers were killed, and many were my friends. The building sheared off about 3 feet south of my desk. Had I not called in sick, I surely would have perished with the other 168 souls. If you don’t take time to be still, you cannot hear the messages.

You have trained over 10,000 individuals. Tell us about your strategy.

Most of my training/talks focus on developing leadership skills, change management skills and customer service. These are delivered in a variety of ways including keynote speeches, breakout workshop sessions, and luncheon training sessions. I’m a contract trainer for the State of Oklahoma, federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and associations. As a Certified DISC Facilitator, I love to provide sessions that highlight our different behavioral styles and the importance of each one, or the world could not go round – at least not so smoothly! One of my best-selling books on Amazon, How to Reach Your Goals in 12 Minute Increments, is a perfect platform for an inspiring talk to small or large groups.

What will people notice when working with you?

I’m extremely relational! I love to collect people. I love to help people. I’ve experienced a lot and love for people to learn my failures and successes. Why should you take the hard road on every single journey? By-pass a few of those for a smooth highway. I’m a very straight-shooter and tell it like it is, but never want to offend. I always want to build up and be very inclusive.

Tell us about the popular, Destined for Success with Jennifer Takagi. What is coming up on your podcast?

This podcast has been such an easy and seamless process for me. I met a woman at a conference and she explained that I needed to build an audience and the fastest way to do that would be a podcast. The first episode launched in September 2018 and has just kept growing! I share the lessons I’ve learned and observations I’ve made that could be helpful to my audience. It’s very interesting that most of my most popular episodes are solo episodes versus interview episodes which is not a common occurrence for most. I’m continuing to find topics most valuable for my audience and guests that can also provide amazing value. Upcoming episodes will probably have a few LIVE sessions with guests!

What have you learned about yourself as a result of your work over the years?

I have more gifts than I ever imagined that I did or would or could have. My gifts are actually more to help others than for myself. The highlight of my day is closing my laptop knowing that someone’s life is better as a result of spending time with me.

A Retreat for every Girlfriend

The GirlfriendismTM Retreat is an annual event that is hosted in honor of National Girlfriend’s Day on August 1st with alternating locations between the U.S. Virgin Islands and a global destination. This year’s international experience was made possible by the 31 women who sponsored their attendance, U.A.W.O., The XauSky Group LLC and My Girlfriend’s Closet/Girlfriendism.  Donations were also made by the U.S. Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority (USVIEDA) and contributions to the cultural exchange were made by Designs by Regal.

About the Founder:

Khnuma is the mother of two princes, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet St. Croix and Founder of GirlfriendismTM!  Khnuma is a full time entrepreneur and student who holds a B.A. in Communications and Dance from Hofstra University, an M.A. in Education Guidance & Counseling from the University of the Virgin Islands – St. Croix Campus and is currently a PhD candidate at Capella University where she is completing her dissertation on domestic violence and dance in partial fulfillment of the PhD in Advanced Studies in Human Behavior.

What inspired the vision of The Girlfriendism Retreat?

The Girlfriendism Retreat stems from the overall Girlfriendism concept which is inspired by women, created by women, and ALIVE because of women. Our mission began in part when we opened My Girlfriend’s Closet in 2011. Now…while, I am the sole owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet, I always say ‘we’ because the mission was never about me – it was always about honoring the women who came before me, celebrating the women who are with me and envisioning a ‘living energy of empowerment that would continue to grow in the women after me through the movement…but I digress! When we opened the boutique our slogan was ‘Empowering Women through Fashion, Faith, and Friendship’ but fast forward…we realized that our boutique evolved to more than a place to shop.

In 2020, there were many changes that occurred due to the pandemic including my decision to resign from my full-time job as the Executive Director for the Territorial domestic violence and sexual assault prevention agency to focus on the business. To say the least, I am offering an expedited version of this transitional process but as we say in the Caribbean, ‘to make a long story short (lol), I essentially had the opportunity to reflect deeply on what my business meant to me and WHY I was called to intentionally immerse myself in it.

Ultimately, I realized that it was this ‘thing’ called Girlfriendism – a term that the girlfriends who have supported us over our nine years in business at that point had created to describe the ‘feeling’ that they experienced every time they shopped with us or supported our girlfriend events. It is through this reflective process that I realized that Girlfriendism is more than a ‘thing’ – it is a legacy of what is created when women can be their authentic selves and genuinely support, celebrate and embody women’s empowerment. From that, our mission has evolved to a seven-layered business that provides services through Girlfriendism Fashion (My Girlfriend’s Closet), Girlfriendism Fitness (SoKh Caribbean Dance Fitness), Girlfriendism Wellness (The Annual Girlfriendism Retreat), Girlfiendism Business (Training in collaboration with The Xausky Group), Girlfriendism H.O.P.E. (The Non-Profit, Philanthropic Arm of Girlfriendism that is a Project of the St. Croix Foundation) and Girlfriendism Travel (International Girlfriendism Retreats & Group Travel For Women’s Businesses). Having taken the risk of following my passion full-time AND expanding the business through multiple facets, I wanted an avenue to share fearless energy that encouraged women to follow their passion by engaging with other women who were on a similar journey while highlighting sister entrepreneurs who have dared to do the same and have done so while supporting the brand. To accomplish this, I wanted to create an intimate space that offered a concentrated version of the broad range of services that we offer while providing a ‘safe escape’ for women to detach from the chaos of their daily routines and submerge into self-love, reflection, and sisterhood through intentional experiences crafted by women, for women. From these desires, the Girlfriendism Retreat was birthed!

You have taken groups of women all over the world with your retreat, can you share what message you hope every woman walks away with?

For starters, women…particularly Black women…specifically Afro-Caribbean women…especially women in the Virgin Islands…CAN live, laugh, and love together! The stereotype that Black women cannot get along and are ‘catty’ is simply not the experience that we have witnessed in the last eleven years of business, and it certainly wasn’t our experience in Greece. In fact, the energy was so powerful and radiant, that our group was voted ‘best of the year’ by Culture Holidays/ Tour Greece, and everywhere we ventured, folks responded positively. This speaks to our ‘light’ as a collective and this is the narrative that I want Girlfriendism to represent for all women but especially for Black women.

Secondly, I want women to learn to prioritize themselves and trust their intuition. As women (and this includes anyone who identifies as such too!), our femininity is led by our intuition and in turn, our intuition is guided by our soul. Because our souls are unique and cannot be replicated, that means that when we tap into our souls…our authentic selves…anything that we create will be fueled by our energy – because it is why we were created! So for women who trust us with the Girlfriendism Retreat journey, I want them to know that what attracts them to this brand is simply a reflection of who they are: beautiful, kind, courageous, daring, spiritual, powerful – all things positive! Likewise, it is that same intuition that will inform them of what opportunities to take, which opportunities to be still and think upon and which opportunities are intended for another chapter of their life. We are all that we need. We were born equipped and now we just have to trust ourselves, tap into our intuition, embrace what makes us different and celebrate others who are doing the same (and/or are on the journey to do the same) – the Girlfriendism Retreat has been a joyful space to do that!

Who is this retreat for, can you share a little about your target audience?

Sorry, I’m not sorry – Black women! While Girlfriendism is all about women as a whole, as a Black woman with Afro-Caribbean roots from the often overlooked yet predominantly Black lead territory of the U.S. Virgin Islands, my efforts are inherently about the women who reflect what I see in the mirror. Beyond that connection, however, is the reality that Black women – whether in the U.S. Virgin Islands or abroad – are dynamic leaders in their homes, communities, and societies yet, our history and realities have not always reflected that truth. So while all women are welcome to attend the Girlfriendism Retreat, based on many factors including the origin of the movement (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands – historically known for the Crucian Fireburn where four women lead our islands and enslaved Africans to our own emancipation through a revolt and massive fire burn in 1848), our retreat is inevitably created with Black women in mind.

You just wrapped up your second annual retreat, can you share a little about the experience with us?

Absolutely! The Girlfriendism Retreat in Greece was epic on many levels as we hosted a successful experience with an intergenerational group of women ranging from ages 22 to 76 with diverse backgrounds in business from the U.S. Virgin Islands and beyond! One of the many highlights from this endeavor was the cultural and business exchange for women of color hosted in partnership with the United African Women’s Organization of Greece (U.A.W.O.) whose mission is to create awareness of various issues concerning African women and their children living in Greece; support and fight for the rights of second generation Africans in Greece; explore and incorporate the rich African woman heritage into the rich Greek heritage; and to work hand in hand with various social, NGOs and other organizations that stand for justice, anti-racism efforts and equitable society for all. This collaborative event launched the retreat activities and highlighted both cultures as we were adorned in V.I. Caribbean madras and the African women of Greece who represented various countries from Sierra Leone to France to Albania and beyond, wore their traditional African attire as well. In addition to introductions, business information exchange, and collective conversations on women’s empowerment, we also engaged in traditional African drumming and dance, authentic Greek hors d’oeuvres, cultural gift exchanges, and presentations on diversity, equity, and inclusion by the U.S. Embassy in Athens. Essentially, while we the retreat offered the opportunity for personal and professional expansion through travel, we connected with women in business and literally begin building relationships with girlfriends around the globe while simultaneously, putting the wheels in motion for our 2023 Girlfriendism Retreat on St. Croix (which we aim to have 50% of girlfriends from the Territory and 50% from abroad – so yes, you are invited!).

What is next for The GirlfriendismTM retreat, what will 2023 bring?

Anything that the universe has to offer – we’re open! As of now, we are extremely grateful that our first international Girlfriendism Retreat with 31 women from the U.S. Virgin Islands (some residing in the territory and others stateside) in Greece was a success and we are already in motion preparing for the third annual Girlfriendism Retreat which will be held in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Our desire is to continue connecting the women that we have met all over the world by inviting them to visit us in our home as we continue to visit theirs during future international retreats. As such, our desire is for the network of Girlfriends to grow and double the attendance while also honing in on the areas of self-love/relationships, legacy building, investing, and entrepreneurship in 2023! Beyond that, we have already begun expanding our Girlfriendism Travel team so we can host retreats for couples, families, and spiritual growth as of 2023 and we are also exploring options to open the boutique in a second location. To say the least…we’re up to good mischief so stay tuned!

How can women in entrepreneurship support The GirlfriendismTM brand?

In the words of one of our U.A.W.O. 2022 Girlfriendism Retreat attendees (from Greece), ‘Girlfriendism is Black Joy!’. In order to support the Girlfriendism Brand, we encourage women in entrepreneurship to first and foremost, find their inner joy so they can, in turn, radiate this joy in their families and communities and especially, in their relationships with other women. In doing so as a collective, we can co-create the spirit of Girlfriendism all over the world while also attracting other brands that are doing the same in their own unique way. Then, we’d encourage women to engage with us – to collaborate through support and/or invitation – by visiting and subscribing to our site at www.girlfriendism.com where they can keep posted on all that we have done, continue to do and how they too, can be involved. Lastly, they can show their support by following our social media pages and handles: Facebook and Instagram: @mgcstx, @allthingsgirlfriendism #Girlfriendism, #GirlfriendismRetreat2021 #GirlfriendismRetreat2022 #girlfriendismretreat2023!

Matthew Grabelsky’s Realistic Oil Paintings Depicting People with Animal Heads Gaining Global Recognition

“My realistic oil paintings depict people with animal heads, often riding the New York City subway. I use fun details that connect to specific animals to tell humorous stories. I became fascinated by animals as a child during frequent trips to the zoo. I was also enthralled by the fantastical stories my parents read to me. An Art History class in college sparked my interest in classical European figurative paintings. I loved how these works presented views of the world that my mind could wander around in. I wanted to create my own contemporary version of them, so I studied classical painting techniques and hit on the idea of anthropomorphic figures with animal heads. I grew up in New York where the subway was the central place everyone came together so this became the primary setting for my characters.”- Matthew Grabelsky

Your art shows a hyperrealistic painting technique with a surreal penchant for unlikely juxtapositions. Tell us about your work.

I make realistic oil paintings of people with animal heads. I fell in love with classical European painting during an art history class in college. I loved how these painters were able to create visual stories, often with mythological characters, and I wanted to make something that followed in their footsteps. After college I moved to Italy to study classical painting techniques and eventually hit on the idea of creating a modern version of mythology where people with animal heads go about their days while riding the subway in New York City were I grew up.

Why have you chosen animals as your focus?

My parents took me to the zoo a lot when I was a kid and that started my fascination with animals. I love how they seem just like us in some ways and are completely alien in other ways.

Much of your work depicts your characters on subways, and males with mythological human hybrids. Which have resonated the most with collectors?

The first painting that I did in this series was me with a bull head and my girlfriend at the time sitting next to me on the New York City subway. It felt both personal and captured my unique mix of interests in a way nothing else I painted up to that point had done. It was also the first piece that people who saw my work really responded to. That led to a series of similar paintings with a couple where the man had an animal head. Eventually I decided to expand my imagery and started painting the women with animal heads as well.

Luckily I found that as my worked changed, people continued to collect it. As an artist I think its important to evolve, and I’m happy that my collectors have followed my journey with me.

Where can we see your work?

My next show is coming up in January with Thinkspace in Los Angeles. I’ve got a bunch of new paintings at various degrees of completion that I’m excited to share when they’re done.

Felton Pilate Best Known as the Lead Singer of ConFunkShun Releases New Album

Felton Pilate is best known as the lead singer of Confunkshun, an R&B Old School band created in 1974 while in Memphis, Tn.

Pilate was born in Jackson Mississippi to Felton Pilate Sr., a naval physician, and Benita Akines Pilate, a music major and social worker. After many military assignments, The Pilate family’s last move would be a move to Vallejo, Ca., where Felton Jr. would spend his formative years.

Pilate knew from a very young age that music would be an important part of his life. He took trumpet and piano lessons very early and self-taught himself to play guitar and trombone. In high school he created a band and performed locally while honing his craft.

Michael Cooper, who had another local band, asked him to join his group during their final high school years and with no hesitation, Felton said yes. That was the beginning of his career as a member of Project Soul who went on the road with Stax recording artists, “The Soul Children” and moved to Memphis, Tn. Project Soul got a record deal and were asked to change their name. The band chose ConFunkShun and the rest, as they say, is history.

Pilate’s accolades include Record Producer, Songwriter & Recording Artist with (USA) Diamond Platinum Sales Status and numerous Gold, Platinum, Multi-Platinum, and Mega-Platinum selling albums; participated in and contributed to numerous Grammy winning and nominated recording projects; Recording Engineer, Mixer, and Mastering Engineer. Pilate has 45+ years touring history as an internationally recognized R&B artist principal, recording studio owner and manager having trained numerous other eventual Grammy winning record producers.

During COVID, he released two singles, “We’re Still Here” and “Waiting Just to Dance” and is currently in the studio working on finishing the album. Both songs are doing extremely well on the charts worldwide. As for ConFunkShun, Felton and Michael Cooper are fine tuning ConFunkShun’s new Christmas Album, set for release in the fall of 2022, and a new R&B album.

Pilate has a gift of perfecting and creating multiple projects at one time and is extremely busy with his music as well as writing, editing, and creating a soundtrack for a new TV pilot. Over the last two years, he has also developed several stage shows including; “Everybody Dance! ”, a tribute to Nile Rodgers and Chic, “I Love Music! ”, a tribute to the Philly Sound, and “Rock Steady! ” a tribute to Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds.

When did you know that music would be your life?

I can’t accurately say that there’s an actual “when”. There was a time when I loved writing and performing but didn’t have confidence that music should be my priority… music was originally planned to be my back-up plan! To best answer your question, I have to go back a little bit. There’s always been a piano in the house as far back as I can remember, even when I lived with my grandmother at the age of 4. I always enjoyed watch and listening to my mother play and sing. When I was able to read, I started understanding the books that were stored in the piano bench… in retrospect they must have been the beginning books my mom started with when she was a child.

Music has always been a *part* of my life. I got the inspiration to actually consider playing music in front of an audience at a junior high school dance. It was my first time seeing a live band perform popular music and I was blown away! It didn’t occur to me that music could and would be the focus of my life until the summer of ’72  when Project Soul (what we were called before changing our name to ConFunkShun) became the back-up band The Soul Children, one of the recording artists on the STAX label out of Memphis. Music has been my only income since then.

Your accolades include Record Producer, Songwriter & Recording Artist with (USA) Diamond Platinum Sales Status and numerous Gold, Platinum, Multi-Platinum, and Mega-Platinum selling albums. What does it take to succeed in the business?

Ha!  Before you get to the “succeeding” part, you have to get past the “surviving” part! Just to do that, you must learn and *respect* the fact that it’s called the music business for a reason. In order to have any *chance* of actually succeeding, one should learn as much as you can about the business, perfect your craft, and don’t take compromising shortcuts.

During COVID, you released two singles, “We’re Still Here” and “Waiting Just to Dance.” What was the inspiration for these singles?

“We’re Still Here” if you listen to the lyrics, is not just about people wanting the club to stay open longer… it is a statement about the fact that those of us who *have* survived need to be grateful that we can still do what we do. “Waiting Just to Dance” was literally written out of my frustration with the COVID lockdown. “Dance” became a metaphor for the world just wanting to get back to normal.

FMM: What makes your new single so special?

I can honestly say that most of the songs I’ve written, whether it’s an uptempo dance song, or love ballad, are tributes in some way to the people that I was inspired by or learned from, either directly or indirectly. I was really encouraged by the fact that Leave The Door Open, by Silk Sonic, won the “Song of the Year” award at the Grammys. That said a lot to me since that song, in my opinion is basically an old school style ballad and since I’m a romantic kind of guy, “Here’s What I’d Do For You” seemed to be a natural kind of song to write.

You are collaborating with Michael Cooper and fine tuning ConFunkShun’s new Christmas Album, set for release in the fall. Tell us more.

We started working on this last year when Michael Cooper suggested that we do one.  I immediately wrote 3 brand new Christmas songs and currently working on 2 more. I’m very pleased with the progress so far and excited about the fact that it’s our first Christmas project. We released one of songs, “A Christmas Kind of Day” as a single last year and got a very enthusiastic response. Michael has a version of “My Favorite Things” that I really love!

What do you want your legacy to be?

To some degree, my legacy has already been set. Let me clarify… people approach me and tell me things like “We got married to your song”. Knowing that I’ve touched someone’s heart, affected someone’s emotions, or encouraged something positive in someone’s life based on something I wrote or created is huge for me. If I don’t accomplish anything else before I die, I’m totally happy with that….

Young Entrepreneur, Bebe Panian Launches Facial Nova Skincare, a New Groundbreaking Beauty System Technology

Bebe Panian is a high school student who is pursuing a career in humanness. Bebe has a passion for helping others and was inspired by her family to launch Facial Nova Skincare.

“I’m evolving each day and I don’t have a particular occupation yet, however, I am considering a future in the medical field. I would like to improve on our country’s current lifestyle especially since our society is overmedicated and undernourished. Technology has come so far to even have autonomous cars, but, yet medicine has not improved & food is consistently lower in quality and nourishment. I love making people smile and supporting them so I became a cheerleader. I also enjoy swimming and baking. I am a homebody and love hanging out with my family and friends.” Let’s see what sparked Bebe’s desire to launch Facial Nova Skincare

How did your family inspire you to launch a beauty business?

My father is a scientist. My mother has gained knowledge of science from my father as I have. It’s awe-inspiring to see a ”mom” turn into a business/ science professional. It was a game changer for me to see my mother running a business while taking care of my infant brother. It pushed me to step up to the plate and get serious about my career journey.

Tell us about Facial Nova and the groundbreaking beauty system.

Facial Nova is a skincare and wellness company that utilizes a new groundbreaking beauty system technology developed by my father’s lab that turns hydrophobic (non-water-loving) molecules into hydrophilic (water-loving) molecules. This tech permits all those valuable oil-based herbal molecules to be in a water-based product.

You spent a lot of time in your father’s lab. Tell us about this experience.

As a young girl, it was hard to find interest in things besides playing with my Barbie dolls. I remember the first time my father brought me to his lab, I fell head over heels. I thought about it as an obstacle course. There were so many machines that could be used for different levels of ideas for products. In other words, I found a deep interest in working in my father’s lab at such a young age. I admired his industrious work and still do till this day for teaching me everything I know.

What makes Skin Genius NAD+ facial serum the perfect product?

NAD+ is an incredibly useful molecule that has been shown to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, protect from sun damage and support new collagen formation. Our skin is the largest organ in our body and it is exposed to UV on a daily basis. UV can cause a deficiency of NAD+ which is linked to skin aging and cancer. NAD+ is crucial in preserving genomics stability which impacts all age groups. Recent research has also proven NAD+ signaling is impaired in teen brains mostly from stress during puberty. This can cause overweight issues and struggling to focus. A caveat of NAD+ is the high susceptibility to degradation. The tech that all Facial Nova products employ are used also with NAD+. This stabilizes and energizes our neural pathways.

Tell us about Healthy Awareness Minds: HAM.

Healthy Awareness Minds (HAM) is a program to benefit adolescents going through anxiety. During the pandemic, I had encountered what anxiety was. So, as the cliche goes, you don’t truly know anything until you go through it. I decided that Facial Nova will donate part of its profits to help teens going through issues by supporting anxiety prevention groups.

“Everybody Gon See” with Gospel Music Artist Talasia

Born and raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Talasia is a natural born singer. As a young girl, Talasia accompanied her mother to the studio where she frequently recorded original music. After years of singing in Abundant Life Worship Center’s choir, the “Rejoice” singer was inspired to write her own music, but feared that her music was unsuitable for gospel due to its unconventional lyrical and melodic style. With her gift, Talasia introduces God to nonbelievers and helps fellow Christians strengthen their connection to Him. Talasia performed at the Maranatha Rhema Awards in June. During the award show held at the Plays & Players Theater in Philadelphia, the rising vocalist won Gospel Song of the Year and Contemporary Christian Artist of the Year for “Everybody Gon See.”

Listen to Everybody Gon See on Apple MusicSpotify and YouTube

We are excited for this opportunity to check in with Talasia and see how life and music has changed since we spoke to her last.

At what moment did you realize you had a gift for music?

When I put out my first song and received the feedback. It was crazy. I was like “y’all really like it!?” Lol, It was the messages received about being people being encouraged to push on through their obstacles that sealed the deal for me. If this can help lift spirits, win souls, and change perspectives… let’s do it!

How would you describe your creative flow when writing music?

It’s situational. If I hear a track first I pay attention to how it makes me feel. Then I figure out what I want to write about. Sometimes I hear the lyrics, melody, drum patterns, and background vocals all in my head and I sing what I hear to my producers. There are other times when it’s a collaborated effort between myself and Quinten Showell (Executive Producer and Co-Writer). I thoroughly enjoy being able to express myself through music. It’s truly fun and beautiful!

How did the creative process shift with your new song “Everybody gon see”?

This was a similar process to the one I listed earlier. I had the inspiration for this song since I’ve been a kid. Because of my experiences, I knew what I wanted to say, how I wanted it to sound. Writing the song so many years ago and actually just putting it out was interesting. You really see my growth as a singer, artist, and personally with my spiritual growth and perspective. Everything about the song truly reflects who I am. lol, It’s my “song baby!” I wrote the whole song in 2 hours. I sang what I had in my head to my producers and they killed the track!

Your new single Everybody gon see, what is the inspiration behind it?

When I was younger, everybody knew I was a church kid. It wasn’t really popular to be a church kid back then.
I found myself in a lot of different debates about why I believe in God. I’ll never forget hearing “You believe in something you can’t even see or have proof of. How dumb is that?” The proof is all around us. The proof is YOU. When I decided to actually do my own music. I always wanted a song that I could make my way, from my perspective, bragging on who I know God to be. I’m so sure of Him.

What message shows up throughout every song you release?

I think every song will have a consistent positive message. They all will be different, real, genuine, and creative in the way it’s served to you, but I truly want you to know that everything is going to be okay. There’s a plan. You can breathe.

What message do you hope women walk away with from your new single?
I hope they become more confident in God, and in themselves. I hope that if they don’t know Him, I spark a thirst in their soul and desire to at least want to start that journey to figuring out who God is and how much He loves us. It’s okay if you are on this journey alone with God. No matter what people say… one day… “Everybody Gon See” period! lol

Can you share the highlight of your journey this year?

So many crazy amazing things have happened this year. My Mind is blown and humbled per usual. I think the highlights of this year are 4 people giving the testimony of being challenged to grow spiritually by our music and from our last concert, that’s everything to me! Also being nominated 4 times for our music from two different award shows. We actually won at the first one and are getting prepared to attend the second one! That’s never happened to me before and I’m so grateful that I get to experience some fruit from our labor of love! It’s a blessing, humbling, and a testament to what can happen when you Trust God, stay focused, and DON’T STOP!

Where do you hope to see your career in the next 3-5 years?

I’m not quite sure exactly where I’ll be. I do know that with God before me I’ll be successful because I won’t give up. We are on a mission to spread God’s love and that mission is FIRST. God has shown His favor over our life so I know that wherever we are, we will be doing what God sends us to do and what an honor it is to serve others!

What is next for Talasia?

So many things are planned for the next few years. There will be no breaks! New music, YouTube content, concerts, and so many surprises it’s all coming! We are just getting started! Excited for the journey ahead!

Fun questions:

Favorite Worship Song:

Jireh – Maverick City

Favorite artist out right now?

BEYONCÉ period! lol

Go to scripture when things are tough.

This isn’t fair because it’s so many. I would have to say (Philippians 4:6-8) it brings my mind back to a place of stability to rationalize what’s going on and what my perspective and heart’s posture should always be towards EVERY situation. “The problem may change but the formula to the solution never will. “

Favorite Scripture verse of all time?

Philippians 4:13….. because I truly CAN! NO LIMITS! NO EXCUSES!

What is your definition of a Pretty Woman Who Hustles?

What makes us pretty has nothing to do with how we look. It’s what’s in our hearts. Being a kind-hearted woman, with an unmatched work ethic will lead you to the road of being a “Pretty Woman who Hustles”! Shine sis!

Famous Illustrator, London Ladd Shares Powerful Vibrant Imagery in the Book, “Black Gold” Written by Laura Oboubi

London Ladd, a graduate of Syracuse University with an MFA in Illustration, whose artwork has been featured in numerous critically acclaimed picture books, newspapers and magazines, along with community based murals. He uses a unique mixed media approach combining cut paper textured with acrylic paint, tissue paper, colored pencil, pen & ink to bring his diverse subjects to life. Each image is steeped in intensity and emotion, a reflection of the artist himself.

His goal is to open a visual arts community center for lower-income families so they can make their own art in a fun, creative environment.

His clients include, Knopf, Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster, Philomel Books, Rise Books, Just Us Books, Disney/Hyperion, Scientific American, and New York Times to name a few.

How has art carried you through so many joys and pains?

During my almost thirty years of studying art, I’ve walked away numerous times, whether for personal or financial reasons. Still, I eventually returned to it because it was in my heart. The most traumatic years of my life were 2018 – 2019. In 2018, my long-term marriage ended. In 2019, my mother died. Art was a large factor in my healing from those end significant losses. In fall 2019, I started grad school at Syracuse University, deciding to approach art and life with an attitude of fearlessness that held me back. Art is my passion which I don’t take for granted. Art saved me and continues to open new possibilities in my life I never knew existed.

What do you enjoy the most about being an illustrator?

What I love most about being an illustrator is a variety of things. One is problem-solving. To take written text and have to create an image(s) is an exhilarating thrill. The rush I get when first seeing an email from the art director never gets old because the projects are never the same, so my thought process is different. Two, creating the art, whether traditional mixed media or digital, I’m doing work that best represents me within the depths of my heart, and to pour on the page is exciting. Three, the therapeutic elements of creating art. Being alone, surrounded by art-making materials, is my sanctuary from the world’s cares. I love it!!

Tell us about the powerful vibrant imagery in the book, Black Gold written by Laura Oboubi.

Laura Oboubi wrote a story that spoke to me in ways no other story I’ve illustrated has ever Black Gold is about the unconditional love between a mother and child. I wanted the imagery to convey that in this ethereal, mystical, vast, dense way that can span the cosmos. Each page builds upon this theme with rich colors that sometimes seem like it is moving and still at the same time. I poured so much love and care into Black Gold so the reader will not only see visually but feel it as well.

BLACK GOLD (Harper Collins), written by Laura Oboubi. This lyrical picture book is a joyous, poetic, celebration of Black children and a reminder of the Universe’s unconditional love in stunning verse and captivating collage. Perfect for fans of Sulwe!

When the Universe decides to create a child, she draws from the earth—rich, dark, and full of everything that gives life, including eyes like black star sapphires and full lips to speak the truth. With help from the Sun and the Moon, they create a child of the Universe: beautiful, powerful, and boundless with the brilliance of Black Gold.

Laura Obuobi’s empowering, whimsical text and London Ladd’s lustrous, captivating illustrations will inspire children to love themselves exactly as they are.

What was important to you on this project?

Everything! It is symbolic of rebirth as an artist by seeing and creating in ways that at most faithful to my heart. Understanding the importance of the details within each mixed media illustrates how it reflects me and how I desire to push deeper into my craft of creating art—seeing both the large picture and small details, points of movement, and stillness of the moment. My journey as a man,

father, friend, partner, and artist has prepared an expression through the art spilled the pages of Black Gold, a deep love that can’t be easily explained but felt in the spirit.

What’s next for you?

So many things!! Currently, I’m busy in many areas. I’m teaching some illustration courses at Syracuse University and loving it!! I get to share my knowledge and experiences with young people as they embark on their artistic journeys. I’m illustrating a fantastic book, My Hair is a Book, written by Maisha Oso, a beautiful story about the love of black hair. Afterward, four more books to illustrate over the next three years, so I’m literally “booked up” for the next three years. I’m in the process of writing and illustrating my first picture book too, and I’m thrilled at the opportunity. Also still doing editorial illustrations for various newspaper and magazine publications and anything else unexpected that might come my way. I love every minute because I’m doing what I love creating art.
