Micaela L. Thomas ~ Let’s Talk!

Micaela L. Thomas has always had a knack for writing. Whether it was poetry, plays, songs, books, or short stories, she could always utilize her imagination to keep her centered from the internal turmoil that brewed within.

When she relocated to Columbus, OH., she began discovering her various talents. The story of Micaela’s life has been kept secret for the majority of her 33-years of existence. She has now decided to share her journey to encourage and betterment others who may be suffering in silence. She hopes to assist in advocating for others’ intentional healing through her own journey of self-awareness and manifestation.

When did you discover your passion for writing?

I discovered I had a passion for writing when I was about seven years old. My imagination was crazy! Lol, I could make up all kinds of short stories and fantasy adventures at the drop of a hat. Writing became my outlet. It was a way for me to get away from real life and my feelings throughout life. From people and different traumatic scenarios and situations.

What therapeutic benefits does writing provide for you?

Writing has always been a therapeutic release for me. It soothes me. To be able to write out all my thoughts and raw feelings and emotions is what helps me the most. When I write, I don’t have anyone tearing apart or over-analyzing my feelings, my thoughts, or trying to assume how they think I feel or where I “might” be coming from. It’s a way for me to connect with myself first, before attempting to get or allow anyone else to understand.

There are so many who suffer in silence alone. What advice do you have for them to regain their lives?

The advice I would give to those who suffer in silence is easier said than done. However, the first thing would be, is to change your mindset. Connect with you first on why you feel the things you do. Then release it. However, that may be. Whether it be through therapy/counseling, writing, music, exercise, confiding in a friend or family member that you’re sure you can find comfort and solace in. Many times, we hone in on the fact that we are suffering, but subside the reasons why. In order to regain your life, you have to understand why you are in that certain predicament. There’s no sense in skipping over it, you’ll just end up making the same mistake or choices and end up right back in the same mess. You want to figure out what led you to this place so that you don’t circle back on the same journey and re-visit the same feelings, potentially the same people or the same suffering. You have to do things differently and it starts with you. Tap into your hurt. Your trauma. Feel it. Understand it. Only then, can you move forward from it? It IS a process. It may take a while, but you have to start somewhere.

What is self-awareness in your own words? What is the process to become self-aware?

Self-awareness is the knowledge that you don’t land in certain places by mistake. It is knowing that you may have made a mistake or a choice that didn’t serve you or others, being accountable for it (or them), setting a plan, and then putting into action the steps to rectify, grow and/or learn from those same said mistakes or choices. When you are self-aware, you know that you cannot sit stagnantly or be complacent with where you currently are. The process requires you to be transparent with yourself and others without regret. Without censoring and without allowing the opinion of others to impact your growth and development. The process of self-awareness also involves aligning your internal and external standards with people, morals, and energies that serve you and your purpose. By the time you have made it, at least halfway through this process, you should be able to evaluate your actions, rationalize your thoughts, effectively manage your emotions, take into account how others may perceive you and adjust accordingly, should it be necessary.

In general most of us carry some emotional baggage. At what point should we unpack that baggage? What does that look like on a general scale?

We should always be willing to unpack emotional baggage at any and every point in our lives that involves handling traumatic situations and/or drama. As soon as we can acknowledge that it is there and present, we should be just as ready to acknowledge that it needs to be unpacked and put away. Never should we be willing and ready to carry around these emotional weights of luggage on a consistent basis. On a general scale, what it looks like to unpack emotional baggage, is to first, acknowledge that it is there. Stop pretending that these issues and your emotional trauma, do not exist. I get it…we all like to pretend that we have it all together sometimes. However, pretending adds on more baggage. Before you know, you’ll be singing Bag Lady and trying to figure out who is going to want to come, help you or deal with you with all this “stuff” when even YOU aren’t ready to let go of it. Let alone, unpack it.

Finally, what do you have planned for the rest of 2021?

After acknowledging your baggage, accept it. As much as you hate it, it’s still yours! Accept that it happened, accept that it is there, accept that it is yours so that you can know how you need to open it and heal from it. Address the elephants in the room when it comes to your baggage, with whomever you need to address them with. Suffering in silence does not help with unpacking it. Just adding more onto it. And if you need to, take a mental and/or emotional break. The process is far from easy and will NOT happen overnight. Forgive, although it may be hard to and practice mindfulness. Acquire your peace! Sis, PLEASE do not wrinkle your beautiful face or shuffle your crown being in constant thought of how other people hurt you, did you wrong or even on things you may have done that weren’t right. And last, but certainly not least, seek professional assistance if you struggle to follow these steps on your own. Never assume, that your bag is just yours to carry alone. There are people certified, who have been through the same struggles, there to help you sort through all your baggage. Trust them to help you. Trust yourself and trust the process.

Keeping Your Inspiration To Write On

Writing is a form of storytelling for the masses.  It can heal.  It can help.  It can create awareness.  It can explore imaginations.  It can even be monetized.  I’ve seen so many dope forms of writing over the years.  From children’s books, to poems and to even freelance articles; they were all a part of the storytelling process.  Many writers have to set the mood to get into their writing flow.  While some just need peace and quiet.

Some writers require music, candles, notebooks, a desk, or even sunlight to create their content.  Every writer is different in their own right.  If you’re struggling with writer’s block there are some ways to overcome that.

Re-read one of your favorite novels.  Re-reading your favorite content can help to jog your memory or to create new ideas for your current work.

Read a new novel or article by a new author/blogger.  Indulge in a new literary work to enjoy the content.  That enjoyment may spark ideas for your new project, chapter flows or etc.  No plagiarism though!

Get some sunlight and people watch.  Whether you sit on your front porch, go to a park or to the mall; other people can inspire you.  The change in scenery alone can also spark new content.

Turn off the computer and go out with family or friends.  Sometimes it’s that simple.  Get away and have some fun.

Turn off the TV and set a timer to do a free write or brain dump.  If you are lacking direction or inspiration; try a brain dump of just writing down what comes to your mind.  It may be words, phrases, names or etc but it can lead to your piecing together your next article or novel.

Create an outline for your project.  The free spirit approach may not work for you.  So being specific and precise by using an outline may work.  You can start with the title and synopsis; and then go into naming your chapters and including specific events, plots or characters per each chapter.  My Reading Between The Lines guided journal may be a great source to get this done.

Start out of order.  You may need to create the synopsis and chapter headings first if the main content is failing you.  Or you may need to jot down the chapter names and then go back to creating a tile, synopsis and specific plots.

My company of Curls and Coils will soon launch the Write On subscription box.  This box will help writers of all aspects in enjoying their gift, being inspired to create and helping to motivate them to share new content.  Various everyday items that writers enjoy will be included in each box.  Every month will consist of a different theme to create new ideas and joy in writing.  Included will range from:  notebooks, pens, sharpie markers, candles, new novel, t-shirt, coffee mug, sticky notes, journals and much more.  Stay tuned for the summer release as you continue to create to share your stories.  Use your gift and always remember to Write On!  Follow Curls and Coils online and also on social media.

Bri lives in Brownsville, PA, and is rarely seen without a cup of hot tea and her iPhone.

Why is your business a business to watch in 2021?
The Della and Lila Book Series is an award-winning children’s book series written for children, by children, with all proceeds being donated to nonprofits focused on children and family.

What inspired your to start your business?
My daughter began telling me a story one night… I wrote it down…. and the rest is herstory!

How did 2020 change your business? Was it for the better?
Because we donate all of our proceeds to charity, we had to get really creative to continue raising money. A lot of book and merchandise sales come from in-person appearances. And, when that stopped we had to start thinking outside of the box!

What lessons did you learn in your business in 2020?
Children have some of the brightest, most creative ideas ever imagined. I knew I needed to think outside of the box…. so, when I needed those really groundbreaking ideas… I asked my daughters.

What kind of impact do you want your business to leave on your client or customer?
I want our customers to be fulfilled and know that by purchasing one of our books, they are helping children and families in need.

Do you feel your product or service meets the needs of the market?
Yes, absolutely. I feel that our books teach great lessons, not only in the stories but also through leading by example (through the donation of our proceeds). In our books we want to teach children to be kind and give back. And, by donating our proceeds – we are demonstrating one way to do that.

What hurdles did you personally face in getting ready to open your business and how did you overcome them?
I knew nothing – NOTHING !!! – about the book publishing and distribution world. I made every mistake you could make and sometimes I made them twice. I had no idea what I was getting into! 🙂 But, I am so happy I did!

When did you realize entrepreneurship was right for you?
I’ve always enjoyed the art of entrepreneurship, even from a young age. I really started to enjoy all facets of it when I was able to help others through it.

Why did you choose entrepreneurship?
Once I realized I was able to really, really help others…. I was all in!
What would you say is your most driving motivation to keep doing what you do?
To continue to help others. To set a good example for my daughters for all of the children who read our books (and for the adults, too!).

What are you most excited or passionate about? (In both business and life or both)
I love helping people and I really, really love showing others how to use their gifts to help others too. To help others really develop their gifts and talents and use them for good.

What are the goals you most want to accomplish in your business? What are the goals that you hold personally?
Professionally, I want to continue to be successful, set a good example for my children, continue to write books, and continue to help people. Personally, I want to be a good human and a good mom. That’s what means the most to me.

What’s next for you in your business/brand? What can readers look forward to from you?
We are putting the final touches on the illustrations for our 4th book! Can’t wait to launch that!

Gloria is a Big lover of music and lives in Atlanta Georgia, where she’s is a mom of two four legged creatures.

Why is your business a business to watch in 2021?
We are helping women discover who they really are through self-healing and business.

What inspired your to start your business?
My own search for happiness and fulfillment.

How did 2020 change your business? Was it for the better?
2020 allowed us to find new ways to connect with our women using the power of technology. We instantly became a global movement doing that.

What lessons did you learn in your business in 2020?
Be open to change. Most of us have a specific process that we follow everyday to achieve certain outcomes in our business. 2020 has taught us to be flexible and open to new ways and ideas of doing things.
What kind of impact do you want your business to leave on your client or customer?
We want them to know that loving themselves and achieving their dreams is not an illusion. Anything is possible for them in their life.

Do you feel your product or service meets the needs of the market?
Absolutely.

What hurdles did you personally face in getting ready to open your business and how did you overcome them
The biggest was finding great help. Finding other women who believed in self healing and self love just as much as I did. Constantly talking and interviewing the right people is the only way to overcome that hurdle.

When did you realize entrepreneurship was right for you?
In college when I use to sell computers students.

Why did you choose entrepreneurship?
I love creating and implementing ideas. It gave me a sense of purpose and freedom.

What would you say is your most driving motivation to keep doing what you do?
The woman who show up everyday ready to take their life to the next level.

What are you most excited or passionate about? (In both business and life or both)
I’m excited and passionate about all the women we serve. They really keep me on my toes and show me everyday how important it is to stay humble and grateful.

What are the goals you most want to accomplish in your business? What are the goals that you hold personally?
The biggest goal I believe I want to accomplish is creating a community of women who are not only loving themselves but thriving in every area of their life.

Did you have any key mentors or people who deeply influenced who you are, what you believe in and what you’re committed to in your work and life? Tell me about them.
Absolutely. I had and still have plenty. My mentors continuously let me know how important it is to stay focus. They also teach me the importance of gratitude and humility. You can not do this work and not start to believe that it’s because of you someone has transformed. Where in reality, it’s not me at all. These women decided that they wanted something different and worked to make it happen. They did all the work, I was just a vessel to remind them of just how powerful they really are.

Did you have any life-changing experiences that put you on the path that led you to be doing what you’re doing today? Tell me about them.
Oh yes.. I lost a lot of people, went through a divorce, and had my own personal struggles with self love all within a short amount of time. Going through drastic changes like that will make you think about your life and where you’re headed. When I looked in the mirror and saw myself, I wasn’t happy with the person that was starring back at me. I knew I wanted to change but I didn’t know how. I knew there was something more I could do and accomplish in my life but needed guidance. That’s why I’m Loving Me Project and Girls L.E.A.P. exist to be that bridge and that mentor/guide to help you through those challenging moments.

What’s next for you in your business/brand? What can readers look forward to from you?
More tools, coaches, and resources to help women transform their lives

Is there anything else you would like to share with me?

Alima’j Co. With Owner Jamila Lee – Keller

Alima’j Co. was founded by Jamila Lee-Keller August 1st 2018. I created the name simply because it is my first name spelled backwards! in Arabic my name means Beautiful and I wanted the name of my brand to coincide with my overall brand. I am a 34 year old unique individual who adores doing hair and utilizing cosmetics! I started doing hair at the tender age of 10 by practicing on my 5 sisters.

I attended cosmetology in 2009 and soon after became a beautician specializing in braids until I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome 3 years later, which slowed me down as a braider (no one wants a slow braider as their beautician). I no longer wanted to run the risk of potentially losing clients due to an occupational hazard in which I decided that I wanted to stay in the field of beauty so I started my brand online and i am continually searching for the coolest items from around the globe. Quality at great costs is my best approach.

My magnificent and upbeat clients are my inspiration to do my best each day.

First Time Author Teaches Black Families About Traveling in her Book “Ehsan Goes to Paris”

@thatriverzgurlbrandllc

L.L Leatutufu loves to gallivant around the world to eat, play, and explore other cultures with her family. After having her son Ehsan, she recognized there was a need for Black, Indigenous children of color to be represented in books as the main protagonist; especially African American males. Ehsan goes to Paris is the first book from her children’s series. The inspiration came in 2018 after she and her family traveled to Paris to celebrate Ehsan’s 1st birthday. She believes her stories celebrate and represent Black children as well as foster the imagination of children who have a wanderlust spirit. Through her book series, she wants to normalize stories and imagery of Black children/families traveling and exploring the world.  L.L. Leatutufu is a working mom from the Bay Area, she works with justice-involved youth with the intention to dismantle broken systems and radiate light where there is despair. Working with youth who have never left the city or town they reside in, also inspired her desire to be a part of exposing children to a world outside of the radius they are familiar with; even if it’s only through her books.

Patrice: Thank you so much for coming on to The Riverz Report Show and for Pretty Women Hustle Magazine.

Laneka: Thank you so much for having me!

Patrice: What led you to write your children’s book and what was the motivation behind it?

Laneka: In the year 2018, we took our son to Paris for his first birthday and the inspiration came from that. I remembered that I always wanted to write a book ever since I was a kid. Early one morning I was doing my meditation at four in the morning and I was speaking to the Spirit and I was saying that I wanted to write a book and the title ‘Ehsan Goes to Paris’ pop in my mind. I wrote the book in one day!

Patrice: When the Sprit speaks to you, we have to be ready to listen. I love the title and the concept. And the fact you wrote the book in a day shows real dedication. I definitely love the cover! It’s very unique!

Laneka: Thank you! I was super detailed with my illustrator. She was laughing stating that the project could have been out already. (laughs) I wanted things to be in divine order.

Patrice: What message do you want readers to get when reading the children’s book whether they are kids or parents?

Laneka: Don’t let this road limit you. The road is your playground and you are welcome to play. There aren’t enough imagery black family travelers enjoying the rituals of life. I want to normalize black children and families traveling aboard, representing black love, and in addition to promoting my book on diversity, but for black families to venture out.

Patrice: Absolutely and I can agree on that message for all the black families out there wanting to venture out and travel. Why do you think it’s important to talk about multicultural and traveling within kids in general?

Laneka: I want to say that it goes back to representation. It’s so much right now of us getting killed, a multi generation of trauma. Sometimes you have to detach and take the time to live; learn to play. Also exposing our kids to cultures, different cuisines, different languages, and to venture out. I think that is very important.

Patrice: With the pandemic still going on and businesses and families are still affected by this, what type of tips can you offer business owners during this time of need?

Laneka: For me I practice self-care and meditation. Getting tuned with yourself is important as well as getting out. I get out by going outdoors and taking my son to a trail or a beach. You can also do some research and figure out what you like to do and where to go. There are still some countries that you can go to; even traveling locally and getting out just to get air. Staying cooped up in the house can create those mental health issues. Journaling is good, for moms who aren’t able to get out, run yourself a bubble bath; do what you need to do to take care of you! My mom used to say “You don’t have to spend money to have fun!” There are different creative things that you can do. Hear more of this interview by visiting www.anchor.fm/theriverzreport
