PAPI’s Bourbon is owned by Michelle A. Dukes, a single mother whose tenacity led her to leave corporate America to become a successful entrepreneur and one of the few black female owners of a commercial Bourbon brand. PAPI’s BOURBON is dedicated to the legacy of her father, Lloyd Dukes, and her grandfather, Pratt Dukes, who produced moonshine in Earlington, Kentucky.
Papi’s Bourbon is a pure Kentucky Straight Bourbon 80 Proof Whiskey that is charcoal filtered and aged two (2) years for a smooth, mellow finish. The Bourbon “without the burn…”. PAPI’S Bourbon is competitively priced with other premium American bourbon whiskeys within its category and is currently available in a 750ml bottle.
We had the opportunity of sitting down with Michelle to discuss her brand and what her plans are for the future.
What has been your greatest achievement thus far in your entrepreneurial journey?
My greatest experience in this entrepreneurial journey is watching my goals, dreams, and plans become a reality. I was very excited when the brand was put on Total Wine and More shelves. The process has been exciting, watching the benchmarks being achieved and then taking it to the next level.
What obstacles have you overcome to get where you are today?
I have overcome lots of obstacles. There is a lot of work to do. As much is given, much is required. In a male-dominated field, a black woman often has to fight harder. It’s not easy, but with deduction, direction, and love of your work. You must work harder to prove you can be in the same gaming field.
What role has social media played in your career?
Social media plays a vital part. Social allows you to touch the masses, which really helps on many levels. Brand Awareness is critical. Social Media will enable you to reach more people and give the brand a voice.
What advice do you have for women entering the entrepreneurship world?
My advice to women entrepreneurs is to get a plan, never give up, love what you are doing, love yourself, be your biggest cheerleader, and never give up. Always continue to stay focused, and don’t procrastinate.
Where did you hope to see your brand in the next 3-5 years?
I hope to see Papi’s Bourbon in every store, bar, and household nationwide. I am hoping my brand will offer jobs, and opportunities and create services to help others to learn more, live better and reach their goals.
