Confidence, Community, and Care: Inside Umber By J. Lenay

Some businesses are built from market trends. Others are built from lived experience, resilience, and the determination to create something better. For Jasmine Nelson, founder of Umber By J. Lenay, entrepreneurship began with a personal struggle that many women silently navigate. What started as frustration with unwanted hair growth evolved into a purpose-driven brand focused on helping women feel confident, cared for, and seen.

Jasmine Nelson built Umber By J. Lenay from a deeply personal place, but her leadership goes far beyond the products themselves. As a founder, she represents the kind of woman who turns frustration into innovation and lived experience into impact. Her journey from dealing with unwanted hair growth to launching a brand that serves women with confidence and care reflects resilience, self-trust, and purpose.

Jasmine’s story offers a compelling example of what it looks like to create a business that is both personal and powerful.

What gave you the courage to turn your personal struggle into a business?
I reached a point where I knew I could not keep relying on things that didn’t work for me. That frustration pushed me to research, experiment, and eventually create something better.

How would you describe your journey as a founder?
It has been challenging, rewarding, and very personal. I had to grow into the role, especially because I’m naturally introverted. The more I shared my story, the more confident I became as both a woman and a founder.

What has entrepreneurship taught you about yourself?
It taught me that I can build something meaningful from my own life experience. It also taught me that consistency matters, and that the work you do early on lays the foundation for everything that comes after.

What keeps you motivated through the ups and downs of business ownership?
Hearing that I’m changing lives keeps me going. Knowing that my journey is helping another woman feel seen or supported gives me a lot of purpose.

What advice do you have for women who want to start a business?
Make sure your idea is solving a real problem. If it is only a trend, it probably won’t last. But if it fills a need in your own life and helps others too, that is worth building.

How do you define success now that you’ve passed the five-year mark?

Success means building a community, making an impact, and creating opportunities for my family. I’m proud of how far the brand has come, and now I’m focused on the next chapter.
