After a year of work with her consulting business, she decided to create a proof-of-concept model, called Changing the Mindset© because the business needed a guide to use when helping clients be successful. The model became a trilogy of books and a bullying and technology non-profit was created called “Changing the Mindset”. This organization teaches the youth nationally and internationally about bullying prevention and how to excel in the skills of technology.
What made you choose this type of business?
I always knew I wanted to be a consultant; I just did not know what type. After years of working in the field, attending school and completing research, I was able to make a decision on my entrepreneurial choice and long-term business model.
What hurdles did you personally face in getting ready to open your business and how did you overcome them?
I did not face any personally hurdles with starting my business. I developed a plan and some goals and took my time. I created a 10 year life plan and 3 year business goals. During this time, I took classes to expand my knowledge, conducted research to clarify information shared with me and hired a coach and consultant to guide me. I took my time with testing services and programs and developed a board of directors to help guide and hold me accountable. Covid-19 was the shift for me and my business. I had to pivot and change my models and marketing strategy to sustain my business.
Does your company help the community where it is located?
What would you say is your most driving motivation to keep doing what you to do?
- My daughters.
- My clients – I enjoy helping business owners achieve their business goals. I also want to be a resourceful and honest “consultant”. It’s not about the money for me, its the relationships and the partnerships.
Have you ever turned down a client?
Yes. Absolutely. I believe that all clients are not for me and I am not for all clients.
What are the goals you most want to accomplish in your business? What are the goals that you hold personally?
I would like to maintain sustainability. I’m not interested in being a millionaire, I’m interested in leaving something for my children and helping the community.
Integrity. This may not be a goal to some, but this is personal for me because I never want to compromise my morals and values for success, fame, connections or money. So everyday I have to make sure I have goals in place that ensure that I complete tasks in order for me to not fall in a position that will compromise my integrity.
Did you have any key mentors or people who deeply influenced who you are, what you believe in and what you’re committed to in your work and life? Tell me about them.
Yes. I’ve been blessed to have many people support my business and guide me on this journey. Each mentor offered a new perspective and a different skillset. I’m grateful for these people because they were instrumental with helping me achieve my personal and professional goals. One mentor in particular was the first to give me a paid opportunity and 2 years later, she is still one of my clients.
