Breaking Barriers: Shaping the Future of Deaf Representation with VOCA Founder, Michelle Banks

Washington, DC Native, Michelle Banks is an award-winning actress, writer, director, and producer. The Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Visionaries of the Creative Arts (VOCA). With an extensive professional acting career that includes appearances includes Girlfriends, Soul Food Series, and more. Directing shows such as Camellia for Camille (Def Spotlight’s Short Play Festival), Broadway’s For Colored Girls, and A Raisin in the Sun (Gallaudet University) to name a few.

Speaking with Michelle Banks via Q&A I was able to find out more about what inspired the founding of Visionaries of the Creative Arts (VOCA).

Can you share with us the inspiration behind founding Visionaries of the Creative Arts (VOCA)?

When I directed a play, A Raisin in the Sun with the Black Deaf cast, at Gallaudet University in 2018, I  realized I had tapped into an incredible talent base in the Black Deaf community. I saw the critical need to continue supporting the creative work of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing BIPOC artists after the production. I was inspired by the work of these talented artists and wanted to give something back to the community. These artists and so many other Deaf BIPOC artists were not getting the exposure they deserved. They needed access to resources to help advance their talents as performing artists. I shared this vision with Nayte Paxton, the director of voice performers in A Raisin in the Sun, and we eagerly agreed to make the vision come true – the fruition of Visionaries of the Creative Arts (VOCA) in 2019.

What motivated you to create opportunities specifically for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing BIPOC entertainers in the arts and culture sector?

The Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing BIPOC community, along with its exceptionally talented artists, has long endured a troubling lack of visibility both within mainstream society and even within the Deaf cultural sphere. This underrepresentation has not only been an unfortunate reality but a call to action. Experiencing this imbalance firsthand served as motivation for me to carve out a dedicated safe space within the arts landscape and increase the exposure of our profession to the arts community.

As a Deaf actress, writer, director, and producer, can you walk us through your personal journey in the entertainment industry?

I have been in the entertainment industry for over 35 years. I knew I wanted to be an actress when I first saw the movie Sounder, which the late Cicely Tyson was in. I was so intrigued by her strong presence in the film. Since then, I’ve been doing what I love – acting, directing, writing, and producing. I’ve acted onstage and onscreen, “Big River”, “For Colored Girls…”, ‘Girlfriends”, “Soul Food”, and “Compensation”. I also wrote and performed my one-woman show, “Reflections of a Black Deaf Woman”, and toured with it to various venues such as the Kennedy Center and The National Black Theater Festival. I’ve been directing more now and then. I actually enjoy the art of directing and working with creative artists, especially actors. In the past year,  I worked as a Director of Artistic Director (DASL) for Olney Theatre Center’s “The Music Man” and for Broadway’s “For Colored Girls…”.  The role of DASL involves sign language translations of the scripts and sharing knowledge of Deaf culture for stage, TV, and film. It is relatively new to the entertainment business.

My journey has facilitated my personal and professional growth as an artist. It has been instrumental in breaking barriers and paving the way for other Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing BIPOC artists in the entertainment industry.

How have your experiences shaped the mission and vision of VOCA?

My experiences in performing arts and running a previous theatre company in New York City, Onyx Theatre Company, have helped me prepare for a huge undertaking by establishing VOCA for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing BIPOC community. My experiences working with the artists have allowed me to witness inequitable access to work opportunities and resources in the industry. Therefore, the mission for VOCA was established to remove barriers to artistic excellence by providing an accessible visual platform for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (HoH) Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BlPOC) to create, collaborate, and showcase our culturally distinct works through various forms of artistic and linguistic expression. VOCA’s vision is to be a global leader in providing equitable access and opportunities for Deaf and HoH BIPOC artists in the creative and performing arts arena.

Can you share some specific challenges you’ve encountered and overcome in establishing VOCA?

We experienced some challenges during the first two years of VOCA’s inception when the COVID-19 pandemic emerged in early 2020. Our first professional production, A Raisin in the Sun, was shut down in April 2020 and we couldn’t perform.   Hence, we had to make necessary changes in our program by transitioning our live performance to virtual performance and panel discussions during the pandemic. It was a very successful turnout because VOCA unexpectedly received over 30,000 viewers. During the post-pandemic, we had our first live performance of ISM in December 2021 and we brought back the production of A Raisin in the Sun this summer 2023.   Indeed, as VOCA continues to expand, we always need donors to help support the programming. We are seeking big donors to support our mission and be part of the vision. VOCA is now in its fifth season, and we are thriving more than ever!

Looking back at your journey and the impact of VOCA, what legacy do you hope to leave in the realm of Deaf representation in the arts?

My aspiration is to establish a lasting legacy as a trailblazer, someone who has fearlessly cleared pathways for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing BIPOC artists to not only thrive in their respective industry professions but to become the vanguards of the next generation of Deaf leaders in the realm of entertainment arts. By breaking through these barriers, the goal is to create an enduring impact that extends far beyond my individual journey. Through my endeavors, I hope to inspire a paradigm shift, where Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing BIPOC artists are not anomalies but integral contributors and leaders in the evolution of entertainment arts. This legacy is about laying down a foundation upon which future generations can build, ensuring a more diverse, inclusive, and dynamic future for the world of entertainment.

About Visionaries of the Creative Arts (VOCA) was founded in 2019 with a mission to support and uplift Deaf and hard-of-hearing BIPOC artists who have long been underrepresented in mainstream and Deaf culture. Through their various productions and initiatives, VOCA aims to address social injustices and provide a platform for these artists to share their powerful stories.

Building Success: Latoya Rideout-Mills Unveils the Vital Role of Strong Business Foundations for Luna Cereal Bar

Latoya Rideout-Mills, the creative force behind Luna Cereal Bar, has been on a mission to redefine dessert experiences since the launch of her dessert shop in July 2022. With an undeniable passion for all things sweet, Latoya embarked on this culinary journey to share her unique vision with the Berkeley County community and beyond.

Luna Cereal Bar isn’t just another dessert destination; it’s a delightful fusion of nostalgia and sweetness. Latoya’s personal “sweet tooth” fetish serves as the driving force behind the innovative creations that grace the menu. Her aim is clear: to transport each customer back to the blissful days of childhood, all while indulging in the delectable world of their favorite cereal brands.

As the founder of Luna Cereal Bar, Latoya Rideout-Mills is not just providing desserts; she’s curating an experience that bridges the gap between fond memories and irresistible flavors. With a commitment to expansion within the Berkeley County area, Latoya’s dream is to continue bringing smiles, joy, and culinary creativity to her loyal patrons.

Luna Cereal Bar is more than a dessert shop; it’s a manifestation of Latoya Rideout-Mills’ passion for sweets and her desire to share that passion with the world. Join her on this delectable journey, where you can savor the best of both worlds – the sweetness of desserts and a trip down memory lane, all courtesy of Luna Cereal Bar.

I spoke to Latoya via Q&A and she shared with me her experience and what her business is doing to ensure she stands out in the industry and well as providing excellent customer service.

What experience and expertise does the Mills Family bring to the food and hospitality industry, and how does it benefit Luna Cereal Bar?

I grew up learning that food brings people together, though I’m not a professional baker, I still enjoy making and preparing dishes for my loved ones. Luna’s was able to benefit from this because now I’m able to allow others to take pleasure in the delectable treats that Luna’s has to offer. When guests come to the Mills residence they always leave with an experience of entertainment and refreshments. With the same concept, I believe my customers would be able to leave with the same satisfaction as our friends and family.

How does Luna Cereal Bar plan to stand out in a competitive dessert and snack market, and what are your strategies for attracting and retaining customers?
Lunas Cereal Bar INC. Prices are higher/lower than the competitors with which we are in direct competition. Queen Bee’s Entertainment & Sweets LLC is a local entertainment and dessert company that provides bounce houses, party planning, entertainment & custom cakes and treats. Because there is no cereal bar within a 60-minutes, there is no direct competition in the Berkeley County Region or Eastern Panhandle, West Virginia. The two closest cereal bars to Lunas Cereal Bar are Day & Night Cereal Bar located in Washington, DC; Springfield, VA, Charlotte, NC, Rockville, NC, Morgantown, WV (a location that is temporarily closed), and Clarksburg, Maryland. This franchise is not in direct competition with Lunas Cereal Bar INC. because the company sells milkshakes, “go-bars,” and actual bowls of cereal that the consumer can sit and eat. Luna’s is not competing against local dessert shops, we will be offering a twist to their typical treat of choice which includes cakes, milkshakes, and Rice Krispie treats. The prices from Day & Night Cereal Bar and Lunas Cereal Bar INC. are different in pricing structure as the two companies are providing their consumers with different goods and experiences for their decadent treats. Luna’s pricing beats competitors by a couple of dollars though we offer the same delectable delights. What sets Luna aside from the other dessert shops is the amount of love along with attention to detail that is made with all treats.

Could you tell us more about the values and principles that guide Luna Cereal Bar’s operations and customer service?

Our company’s Mission is to constantly provide outstanding customer service and believe that customer satisfaction is our ultimate goal. We are dedicated to providing our employees with a respectful and positive work environment that will move onward to Luna’s consumers. Luna’s values include respecting our customers and having our customers and employees in a positive as well as uplifting atmosphere. These values will be attainable by actions with provide above-average customer service. Lunas Cereal Bar INC. seeks to appease and appeal to its peers in the community while enjoying delectable treats that are cereal-infused.

Our vision is to become Berkeley County’s most customer-centric cereal infuses dessert shop eventually expanding to multiple locations. Currently, we are selling 40 assorted treats weekly in hopes of selling double within the coming months. With being able to reach 10k individuals through social media, the dessert shop will be able to meet our target goal of being able to serve the masses within the surrounding area.  Luna’s will be a place where customers can come to find and discover their inner child while enjoying their favorite cereal with their dessert of choice.

Lunas’ operational plan will maintain quality control by utilizing the same recipes, same products, and same batch measurements. In the case that a main vendor is unable to supply Lunas with our typical materials for our baking needs (Sam’s Club), Lunas can order the same pertinent supplies from either Amazon or Walmart. Maintaining consistency in the service to the customers will occur through Lunas’ establishing a new hire process that covers interpersonal service skills with all employees that join the Lunas Cereal Bar INC. team. These employees will be expected to provide service that is courteous and consistent in attentiveness to the consumer when approached to order with Lunas Cereal Bar.

All Staff Members of Lunas Cereal Bar INC. must maintain the following key interpersonal skills:

Customer service experience, Time management: staying on task, focused, and to accept constructive criticism.

Cleaning up your office area, literally helps clear up your thoughts. I can’t think straight if there’s clutter all around me, or I’m scrambling to find things. So having everything in it’s place makes it easier to move through your tasks.

What are 5 must-have items that can help facilitate organization?

My Notes app on my phone, my reminder app on my phone, Post it notes to quickly jot down thoughts or notes, a storage cabinet or shelf of some kind..those are it for me honestly.

Darnika Platt: When Men and Spa Collab

Darnika “Nika” Platt is a lifelong entrepreneur and Atlanta tastemaker. As a 35-year-old businesswoman, she manages her life as a business owner, wife, mother, pet owner, and socialite.

Nika considers herself to be a small-town girl with big city goals. She was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She left for Atlanta, Georgia in 2004 to expand her life in a new market.

A tax preparer since high school, Nika learned how to do taxes and run a business from her parents and grandparents, who not only owned a tax services business but also a flower shop. She was able to take what she learned from her family and her time at Grand Rapids Community College to begin her own entrepreneurial journey. After leaving Grand Rapids and moving to Atlanta, she built a tax services business, with clients that still use her services today.

While in Atlanta, Nika was not only able to successfully expand her life as an entrepreneur but she also met her husband of six years with whom she shares two children. The couple would go on to build a logistics company together. In addition to that, they also built Future Leaders In Training which is a non-profit business that is designed for at-risk youth.

During her regularly scheduled visits to the nail salon and day spas, Nika began to converse with some of the men who also frequented the same establishments. These conversations made her realize that men don’t have access to the same facilities that women have, including a one-stop-shop for self-care.

Combining her love for pampering herself with her deep interest in self-care for the mind, body, and soul, she began visualizing the concept of a mancave, which is synonymous with a male-driven space where guys can relax.

In 2017, Nika began the process of building out her vision for what is now known as ManCave Atlanta. ManCave Atlanta was inspired by the television show “Cheers,” where everyone knows your name, and is an upscale men’s spa and event facility located in the Lindbergh neighborhood of Atlanta’s luxurious Buckhead District.

The physical build-out was completed within a year. Among other features, the facility houses multiple suites, including:

  • manicure and pedicure
  • massage and facial
  • a private barbershop

Nika’s vision is now a reality, one that has amazed every person who has entered the space. Making her the woman who knows exactly what males want and need.

We had the pleasure of catching back up with Nika to discuss more about Man Cave Atlanta, and what’s next for her future in entrepreneurship.

Nika you are truly a genius when it comes to the spa game. Man Cave Atlanta opened in December 2020, during a pandemic and it was genius to do so. What exactly is Man Cave Atlanta?

ManCave Atlanta is an upscale men’s spa that offers massage, manicure, pedicure, esthetician, and barber services. We also have a business and sports lounge for members to work or relax while viewing television and partaking in food and beverages. Additionally, there’s a cigar lounge.
Honestly, it’s full-service facility for men to relax and enjoy themselves. I wanted to provide self-care services for men but my research showed me that they wanted so much more. So, if I wanted to be successful, I had to deliver.

Man Cave Atlanta did not happen overnight. It took about three years to come to fruition. What advice do you have for entrepreneurs who feel like everything has to happen now?

I would say that to take your time and do your research. I’m was an entrepreneur before Man Cave Atlanta but I had no idea about the spa services industry and also I’m a woman so what do I know about what men want and how to market to them. But I did my research, a lot of research. Also, it’s important to make sure that you can secure the capital before moving forward. Our facility looks like it costed a lot of money and it did. No corners were cut, and I went through a lot to get the facility to the standard it is today.

We all have something we pride ourselves in as entrepreneurs. What’s your favorite service offered at Man Cave Atlanta and why?

I love the manicure and pedicure services. That’s the best part about owning a spa, I don’t have to go anywhere else unless I really want a design. But if I need just a basic clear coat or a solid color, I can bring it in for our nail techs to apply.

You and your husband are truly couple goals as you build your family legacy. The non-profit, Future Leaders in Training , definitely caught my eye. Let our readers know more about that and how they can help.

We’ve been blessed enough to both be our own bosses and accumulate a lot of money separately, so it’s only right that we give back to the next generation. So, Future Leaders in Training takes all of the lessons that we’ve learned in business and provides training to youth so they don’t make the same mistakes that us or other entrepreneurs have made.

As a wife, mother and entrepreneur what gems can you drop to help others with the same responsibilities to assist them with juggling everything?

Don’t be hard on yourself. There’s no such thing as the perfect balance. As a mother and a business owner I have a responsibility to both my child and my business. Some days I chose my child over my business, other days my child might have to wait because momma has to handle business. I do my best, but I know at times I may make the wrong choice or I might miss out on something.

However, at the end of the day my daughter is well taken care and knows that I love her. Also, she knows that majority of the time I’m at all of her basketball games and I’m there to pick her up from every practice.

What does a typical day look like for you?

That’s a very hard question, because I don’t have typical days. Most days I’m in Man Cave Atlanta doing some type of administrative work or checking in on everything. I don’t check just emails or watch my staff work, I greet guests, handle party requests, I can be on the phone with the city, and you might even catch me sweeping the floor.
I’m also in the process of building out a new location so everyday is different with that. And then, I have to make sure that I know which days my daughter has practice or which days she has a game. Thank goodness for great staff because I know I couldn’t do it all by myself.

How do you practice your own self-care as you make sure everyone else is good?

I am the self-care queen. That’s how I got into the spa/self-care business. I always make sure I pamper myself with spas, manicures, pedicures, massages, and facials. If it involves self-care I’m there. So actually, I was able to turn my passion for self-care into a business. And it’s unique because it caters to men. But men and women are welcome to enjoy our spa services.

Lastly, as a serial entrepreneur you’re never done with visions. What’s the next vision in the making for you?

We’re working on a new location in Atlanta, but I can’t give a way any details just yet. We’re keeping it mostly a secret but we’re further along than most people would think. That’s all I’m saying.

JB: What are some obstacles and victories that you have experienced while be an entrepreneur?

TG: As an entrepreneur when loves doing hair and who has a passion for helping women look their best, my best victory was in beauty school when a young lady came in and she wanted a wig. I was able to construct a wig that was similar to the hairstyle that she would wear prior to treatment. The look on her face was priceless and let me know that this was something that I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Each time I meet a customer or do a client’s hair I get a satisfying feeling that I have some how made a difference in their life and added a touch of confidence to them. I really love what I do and the lives that I get to touch.

JB: How were you able to pivot during the 2020 pandemic?

TG: COVID-19 came through and just took over, nobody saw any of this coming. So many small businesses were forced to close their doors and online stores were forced to find ways to gain new customers and keep our current customers. It was truly something different. However, because social media is a great source for us to get the word out, post information about sales and new products that are emerging, we had to stretch our creative visions to keep busy. Our influencers keep audiences entertained by using our products in demonstrations. I kept up on education classes and techniques for stylist to register and gain more knowledge.

JB:How are you approaching business post 2020 mentally?

TG: While 2020 was very challenging because of COVID-19 my goal is to keep pushing and continue creating. I am motivated to continue sharing and growing my business by being innovative. Online sells were still pumping throughout the pandemic as people where still getting wigs and even some people became creative and started making wigs. Woman became invested in taking care of their hair so our growth products were definitely essential. So, post pandemic I’m positive and ready to take on more. I’m educating myself more and educating stylists on product usage on training in different areas of cosmetology.

Impactful Blueprint

“Anytime you enter the medical field you should be prepared to make a difference in this industry or isn’t for you. I set out to bring something that I was expecting in the care for my father when he was sick. He wasn’t attended to like I wanted him to be, and patient care is everything. When people are sick, they are vulnerable and often times its hard for them to speak up so loved ones become their voice. I would advise anyone who has a loved one in the hospital or nursing home, to check in regularly, make visits and pop ups to make sure that you are present. Patients face a lot of drama in the medical system and my role is to be an advocate in this community for both doctors and patients. I take my job seriously as I’m compassionate about what I do. I want Doctors to be heard and I want patients to be cared for”.

In 2020 the world turned upside down and inside out, and unfortunately even though we are not currently under lock down we are still dealing with the effects of COVID-19. Essential workers throughout it all have stood strong and at the forefront of the pandemic they rarely let the world see them sweat. However, as we all know, at some point even silent tears and battles become loud and with the pandemic being so unpredictable, everyone across the globe was feeling it, especially those in the medical field. Seeing countless numbers of patients and experiencing unprecedented numbers of deaths daily has to take its toll on doctors, nurses and hospital staff and for Dr. Brooke M. Womack-Elmore she decided to become a solution to what she was seeing,

“The medical field always has to put on a strong face. No matter what we are dealing with or going through we have to smile and say, “How may I help you?”, but this time we hit burnout at full throttle and only our close love ones and friends were there to witness and hear us vent. Unfortunately venting to each other can have repercussions and lead to very harsh consequences because its automatically looked at as a mental problem. In the medical field we are seen as men and women of steel. We can’t break, we can’t cry and we can’t express how we feel about things going on because if we do we are viewed as unstable and it’s a bad stigma to have in this industry. The fact that it’s hard to vocalize and speak about your experiences is what can lead to a lot of what we saw during the 1 phase of the pandemic which was suicide. We lost a lot of doctors and nurses due to silence and not being able to express their burnout.”

The Duke University graduate has taken her advocating to a new level to help doctors and nurses with her Six-Figure Digital Practice she says;

“The Burnout in the medical is beyond anything that anyone can honestly understand. Its heavy and something had to be done to help, So, I came up with and created in the process was the six-figure digital practice. It’s essentially the blueprint for health and medical professionals to take their existing knowledge that they have already acquired and repackage it and rebrand it. Also be able to leverage in a way that they can provide it and make an impact in people’s lives in a larger scale. The blueprint was something that I put together because I felt stifled working in the clinic, I didn’t feel that I was making the impact that I know I could. I was lacking resources and the economy was shifting into a digital space. I knew I had more to give, and the blueprint is 95% hands off digital model and takes your knowledge and digitalized it in order for you to make a passive income stream to free up time and energy to hopefully accumulate some money. It has been able to help me and other colleagues who have implemented the blueprint”.
