Meet Author Catrise Harris

Catrise Harris is the author of “Scarred but not Broken”. She’s a former model, owner of multiple businesses, and survivor. Catrise lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her three beautiful children, and she enjoys spending time with her children, comedy for laughter, and music to feed her soul. Despite the adversities that she faced in her earlier years, she has learned to rely on her belief in God and her love for her children to get her through.

Scarred, But Not Broken delves into the meaning of family and relationships, love and deceit—and how it is possible to maintain your sanity despite life’s challenges. It is proof that where you come from doesn’t have to determine where you can go, and it is a powerful message of how a troubled young girl can blossom into a powerful and confident woman. She faced courageous battles with molestation, abuse, homelessness, motherhood, and a whirlwind of struggle.

First things first, how did we develop an interest in writing?

It started as a child. I would keep a diary and write faithful daily. I would fill my diary pages fairly quickly. As I aged, I naturally started journaling my day-to-day life.

When did you realize you had a story that the world needed to hear?

When I realized how many people had walked in my shoes. So many men and women had experienced a lot of the mental and physical abuse I did, however, never spoke out about it. I felt like I was a voice. Not just for me, but for the unspoken. Some people just didn’t feel comfortable. I wanted more people to come out with their stories so they could start their healing process.

What was the writing process like, did you come up with your title first and build around it or did the manuscript come first?

The process was very emotional. I cried almost writing every chapter. I had to seek therapy to help me cope with the pain that resurfaced. I actually came up with the title first. This was my first book. I didn’t have it all figured out yet, therefore, I hired a publishing/editing company. There was so much I didn’t know. I learned alone the way.

What is the message behind your title?

Scars are okay to have, because we all have had them at one point. However, scars heal over time. Just don’t become broken.

Can you share 3 takeaways you would like women to takeaway from your book?

  • Be a voice. Don’t silence. Your accusers need to be brought to the surface.
  • Turn your pain into gain.
  • Don’t let anything take your dignity. Find coping strategies to get through.

At any moment during your writing process did you experience writers block, what tips do you have for overcoming it?

Yes, writer blocks is common. Especially, for new writers. My mind constantly fogged on me. Hire a ghost writer if need be. I had to find a way to cope with any stress that arrived. I personally prayed a lot and exercised. Very good stress relievers. Hire a editor or publishing company that can help you alone the way. Move at your own pace. Take all the time you need. It’s your story and it need to be perfect for you.

Take me through the first moment you held your book in your hands, what did that feel like for you?

I was overjoyed! I was full of different emotions. I couldn’t believe it was finally here. It’s a joy you can’t explain. I cried and I believe I kissed and signed my fist copy to myself.

What would you say was the most challenging part of your writing process?

Although you know what to say verbally, getting it  written was different. You’re trying to make sure you’re delivering every word to perfection. Also, writing about your personal life bring on a vast of emotions.

What key tips do you have for marketing your book and getting it out to the masses?

Honestly, I hired someone to do all of that. This part was out of my scope. I didn’t know where to start. “Get It Done Publishing” was a life saver. After that, I hired a P&R that helped me with the exposure. I also used all of my social media platforms.

What audience is your book written for?

Anyone who has been physically or mentally abused. I tell my story, but I share how I overcame it.
