Redefining Heroism: Kerry’s Journey from War Zones to Award-Winning Roles

A powerhouse actor whose magnetic performances have captivated audiences across screens big and small. You may recognize him from his standout roles in hit TV series like “Atlanta” or from his heartwarming portrayal in BET Her’s “The Waiting Room.” But Kerry’s talent transcends genres, from spreading holiday cheer in “A Merry Single Christmas” to tackling the gritty world of crime in “Law & Order: Organized Crime.”

Yet, Kerry’s journey is more than just a reel of on-screen success—it’s a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Before gracing our screens, Kerry served as a United States Marine Corps Veteran, confronting the horrors of war with unwavering courage. Now, as a single father raising a teenage daughter, his real-life story is as compelling as any script he’s brought to life.

Kerry’s story doesn’t end there, he’s not just a performer; he’s an advocate. Through his work, he sheds light on the challenges faced by veterans, lending his voice to make a difference in their lives.

Your journey from being a Marine Corps Veteran to launching a successful acting career is truly inspiring. Can you share more about the challenges you faced during your transition, particularly dealing with homelessness, and how you overcame this period of your life?

My journey from being a Marine Corps Veteran to launching a successful acting career has indeed been a rollercoaster ride filled with challenges, one of the most daunting being my struggle with homelessness. After leaving Camp Pendleton with nothing but a box of MREs and a dream to make it big in entertainment, I found myself grappling with the harsh reality of not having a stable place to call home.

For a while, my fellow Marine’s beat-up 2004 Chevy Malibu became my makeshift shelter. It was cramped, uncomfortable, and far from ideal, but it was the only refuge I had as I navigated the uncertainties of transitioning from military life to civilian pursuits. Nights were spent huddled in the backseat behind grocery stores or in empty parking decks, the dim glow of streetlights serving as my only companions in the darkness.

During this time, the feeling of uncertainty weighed heavily on me. There were moments when self-doubt threatened to consume me, and the road ahead seemed insurmountable. But amidst the struggles, I clung to hope like a lifeline, refusing to let go of my aspirations despite the odds stacked against me.

I turned to platforms like Myspace, scouring for opportunities and occasionally finding a couch to crash on temporarily. But these fleeting moments of respite only served as brief respites from the harsh reality of my situation. Despite the setbacks and disappointments, I persisted, fueled by a relentless determination to turn my dreams into reality.

Overcoming homelessness was not easy, nor was it a quick fix. It required resilience, resourcefulness, and an unwavering belief in myself. I sought out every opportunity, no matter how small, and poured my heart and soul into honing my craft as an actor.

Slowly but surely, my perseverance began to pay off. Bit by bit, I started to gain traction in the entertainment industry, landing small roles and making valuable connections along the way. Each success, no matter how modest, served as validation that I was on the right path, propelling me forward with renewed determination.

Today, as I reflect on my journey from homelessness to success, I am reminded of the power of resilience and the importance of never giving up on your dreams. My experiences have shaped me into the person I am today, instilling in me a deep sense of gratitude for every opportunity and a profound empathy for those facing similar struggles.

While the road may have been fraught with challenges, it has also been marked by triumphs and moments of profound growth. Through it all, I have emerged stronger, more resilient, and more determined than ever to continue chasing my dreams and inspiring others to do the same.

As a full-time single father, director, gamer, and acting coach, you wear many hats. How do you balance your various roles and responsibilities while pursuing your passions and career goals?

So picture this: I’m a full-time single father, actor, director, producer, gamer, and acting coach all rolled into one chaotic package. But you know who keeps me grounded in reality? My daughter, aka my little life coach. She’s like my GPS, constantly reminding me that there’s a real world outside of film and television. And get this—she’s not just my rock; she’s my secret weapon in the industry. Yep, you heard it right. Little ‘Jr.’ here has helped me book a whopping 95% of the network roles I’ve snagged. Talk about a pint-sized powerhouse!

Now, let’s talk about that pause button on my career and love life. Yeah, it was on full blast for a few years while I played the role of super-dad, raising my daughter solo. But you know what? I wouldn’t trade those chaotic, sleep-deprived nights for anything. Because every moment spent with her made me want to be a better man and a better actor. Why? Simple. I want to make her proud to call me dad.

So how do I balance it all? Well, it’s like a high-stakes game of multitasking Tetris. Sometimes pieces fit perfectly, and other times, it’s like trying to shove a square block into a round hole. But hey, I’m learning as I go, and I’ve got my mini-coach cheering me on every step of the way. So bring it on, the universe—I’ve got this, hat collection and all!

Your advocacy for physical and mental health is commendable, especially considering your own experiences as a disabled veteran with P.T.S.D. How do you prioritize self-care, and what advice do you have for others who may be facing similar challenges?

As a disabled veteran living with PTSD, my advocacy stems from personal experiences that highlight the importance of prioritizing self-care. I firmly believe that self-care is paramount in managing the challenges associated with PTSD and embarking on the journey towards recovery.

The goal of my advocacy efforts is to foster a more supportive and empathetic environment for veterans grappling with PTSD. It’s crucial to dispel misconceptions surrounding PTSD, as its portrayal as solely psychotic perpetuates public fear and misunderstanding of war veterans. Most cases do not fit this stereotype, and it’s imperative to communicate this truth.

One of the key messages I emphasize is that seeking help is not a sign of weakness. It’s a courageous step towards healing. I advocate for destigmatizing mental health treatment and encouraging individuals to reach out for support when needed.

Central to my advocacy is the reminder of how vital self-care is in managing PTSD. Only you know yourself best, and self-care practices tailored to your needs can significantly impact your well-being. It’s essential to prioritize activities that promote physical and mental health, whether it’s engaging in exercise, practicing mindfulness, or seeking professional therapy.

Above all, my advocacy aims to convey a message of hope: that recovery is possible. No matter how challenging the journey may seem, with support, self-care, and resilience, veterans living with PTSD can find their path to healing. You are not alone, and there are resources and communities available to support you every step of the way.

You’ve mentioned being a full-time bully deterrent. Can you elaborate on this role and how it ties into your philosophy of strength and resilience?

As someone with a background in the US Marines, as an EMT, a bouncer, and armed base security, I’ve often found myself in the role of a protector. This extends to my philosophy of strength and resilience. I see myself as a full-time bully deterrent because I understand both sides of the equation. Having been on the receiving end of bullying, I recognize the pain and fear it can inflict. Most bullies operate out of fear themselves, targeting those they perceive as weaker without understanding the consequences of their actions.

My approach is to intervene when I detect bullying, stepping in to fight for those who are unable to defend themselves, provided they are in the right. This stems from a belief that standing up to bullies is essential for maintaining balance and justice in our world. However, I also acknowledge that a certain level of adversity, including some forms of bullying, can serve as a form of “stress” that helps individuals develop resilience and an understanding of life’s duality.

Just as iron sharpens iron, facing challenges and adversity can strengthen our character and prepare us for the realities of the world. It’s through overcoming fear and adversity that true bravery is cultivated. My role as a bully deterrent is rooted in this belief, as I strive to protect others while also recognizing the importance of facing and overcoming adversity as a means of personal growth and resilience.

Your mantras, including “Don’t Quit, Grit!” and “Hard ain’t impossible,” reflect a mindset of determination and perseverance. How do these principles guide you in both your personal and professional life?

“Throughout my life, I’ve lived by the mantras ‘Don’t Quit, Grit!’ and ‘Hard ain’t impossible,’ and they’ve been guiding lights both personally and professionally. You see, I’ve faced some tough challenges – from being homeless to serving in a war – but I’ve always held onto the belief that perseverance pays off. It’s like those Rocky movies I love; no matter how tough the fight, as long as you keep pushing forward, there’s a reward waiting at the other end.

By 2005, I had experienced more than my fair share of trials, but I refused to let them define me. I delved into music and even shared stages with icons like Ja Rule, KISS, and Destiny’s Child. It’s not about the setbacks; it’s about how you bounce back from them. I survived Marine Corps boot camp, arguably the toughest of its kind, and endured the perils of war in Iraq – bombings, gunfire, you name it – yet I emerged stronger each time.

For me, it’s all about focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on problems. That mindset has seen me through the darkest of times, reminding me that as long as I keep fighting until the end, I’ll come out the other side, whole and intact. It’s about resilience, determination, and unwavering belief in the power of persistence. And trust me, that’s an attitude I bring to every aspect of my life.”

As someone who has navigated through adversity and achieved success, what advice would you give to individuals facing their hardships or setbacks?

Navigating through adversity is an inherent part of the human experience, and it’s in those moments of challenge and setback that our true resilience and determination shine through. If I were to distill my advice into a guiding principle for those facing their hardships, it would be this: Stay Focused on Your Why.

Life’s journey is rarely a straight path; it’s filled with twists, turns, and unexpected detours. Along the way, you’ll encounter obstacles that may seem insurmountable. But by anchoring yourself to your purpose, your “Why,” you can weather even the most turbulent storms with unwavering resolve.

Your “Why” is the driving force behind your actions, the deep-rooted motivation that propels you forward when the going gets tough. It’s the reason you get out of bed in the morning, the passion that fuels your dreams and aspirations. By staying connected to your Why, you can maintain a clear sense of direction, even when the path ahead seems obscured by darkness.

But staying focused on your Why isn’t just about maintaining a laser-like focus on your goals; it’s also about cultivating resilience, positivity, and unwavering commitment. It’s about recognizing that setbacks are not roadblocks but rather stepping stones on the path to success.

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity, to turn setbacks into opportunities for growth and learning. It’s about embracing challenges as opportunities to prove your strength and determination, rather than allowing them to defeat you.

Positivity is a powerful force that can transform even the most daunting obstacles into manageable challenges. By maintaining a positive outlook, you can cultivate a mindset of possibility and abundance, allowing you to see opportunities where others see only barriers.

And finally, staying true to your goals means remaining steadfast in your commitment to your vision, even when faced with doubt, fear, or uncertainty. It’s about trusting in yourself and your abilities, and never losing sight of the life you envision for yourself.

So, to those facing their hardships or setbacks, I would say this: Stay Focused on Your Why. Stay resilient, stay positive, and stay committed to your goals. Remember that the path to success may be fraught with obstacles, but by staying true to your purpose, you can overcome adversity and create the life you envision for yourself.

How do you plan to continue making an impact, both personally and professionally?

Well, you know, making an impact, both personally and professionally, is something I hold close to my heart. Ask me tomorrow and I promise I’ll tell you tomorrow. But hey, let me give you a little peek into what’s cooking in my world.

There are several exciting projects on the horizon for me, my friend. I’m always on the lookout for roles that not only challenge me creatively but also allow me to keep growing as an artist. Right now, I’m in talks for a couple of potential film projects that have piqued my interest. One is this gripping drama that dives deep into complex human emotions. The other? Oh, it’s a big-budget action thriller that’s promising to be one heck of an adrenaline rush.

But hey, it’s not just about the silver screen for me. Nope. I’m exploring opportunities in other areas of entertainment, too. Like, I’m thinking about diving into executive producing a television series that tackles some important social issues, you know? Stuff that gets people talking in a real, thought-provoking way.

And let’s not forget about the personal stuff, my friend. Personal growth and well-being are just as important to me. I’m all about spending quality time with my family and friends, diving into hobbies that light me up, and investing in self-care practices. Because hey, maintaining that balance in life? That’s the key.

So yeah, I’m pumped about what the future holds. With each new project and opportunity, I’m all in, pushing myself creatively and making sure I’m leaving a positive mark both on and off the screen.

Life After Service: PJ Cowan’s Fight for Mental Health and Fatherhood

Army Veteran PJ Cowan served 8.5 years in the US Army. Not only was he deployed twice, he suffered a serious leg and head injury that ultimately was the reason he had to retire from the Military. He was able to spend two years doing Diplomatic Security work after retiring, but in the long run with two small children at home he realized it was time to focus on his family and decided he would stay home in the USA and begin building his own business in health and fitness.

In 2014 PJ opened Soulja Fit Lifestyle, training those who wanted a lifestyle change and looking for transformation. While training others, he competed in over 8 fitness shows and earned his PRO card in 2015.During this time, he was battling a not so private “war” with his now ex wife.

Fast forward to 2023, PJ is now ready to tell his story of what it’s like dealing with a narcissist, a liar, a manipulator. How he has overcome and is still overcoming years of lies and deceit and how it has affected him and his two teenage children. PJ is part of the 50% of married couples who have divorced in the United States. He unfortunately is also a part of the harsh reality that co-parenting isn’t always easy.

PJ started his podcast RAW and REAL VET TALK, to discuss the hard topics that so many are afraid to discuss, from being Military and the transition into Civilian Life, Substance Abuse, Alcoholism, Post Divorce and much more. The one thing that keeps coming up in all these topics is what people are going through Mentally. The scary part in all this, and especially with PJ and what he has gone through and is still going through, is how many Men do not speak up, especially on the Mental health side. It’s not enough that coming back from the Military he has suffered with PTSD and Anxiety, but add this post divorce trauma to it and what he has emotionally been through is unfair … all because he is a man.

We had the opportunity of sitting down with PJ to discuss his transition from military life to becoming a civilian, mental health and his new podcast:

PJ, thank you for your service. Can you share your experience transitioning from military life to civilian life?

Thank you for having me. Transitioning back into civilian life isn’t easy. For those of us fortunate enough to return home, it doesn’t simply erase what we’ve experienced. We witness death, severe injuries, and hear bombs and rifles. It’s a world that outsiders may not comprehend unless they’re part of this community.

It’s a readjustment, accompanied by many challenging days. However, surrounding yourself with good people and discovering support groups and activities you enjoy is crucial. It takes time and effort.

Can you elaborate on your personal experience with mental health challenges, both during your military service and post-divorce?

I always tell people that I’ve been through war, not just in the military. I’m an open book and often say, “My PTSD, I feel, is worse from dealing with my divorce than the military.”

Yes, there’s a lot to deal with when coming home from the military. Migraines, a severe leg injury, and flashbacks are all part of the PTSD and anxiety I personally have faced. The day-to-day struggles persist as a veteran, but I had no idea that coming home would introduce a “different kind of war.”

Navigating a traumatic divorce with a narcissistic person, full of lies and deceit, only added to my PTSD and honestly made it worse. It’s disheartening to fight for your country and hear “thank you for your service,” yet the same government wouldn’t assist me in a custody battle.

I’ve witnessed firsthand how one parent can spread lies and hate and get away with it because the government supports a narrative, ultimately benefiting lawyers financially. At this point, it’s not about the well-being of the kids or family; it’s just about financial gain.

Why do you think there is stigma, especially among men, when it comes to speaking up about mental health issues?

I compare it to being in the infantry in the army: “Suck it up, drink water, drive on, and put a Band-Aid on that.”

It’s the same thing in the civilian world. If you show emotions or talk about it, you are considered weak. In battle, you can’t show weakness, and in the real world, you aren’t seen as a “man” if you aren’t tough. Unfortunately, it’s a label that men seem to have been given, and it’s causing a lot of harm to men mentally, physically, and emotionally.

Opening Soulja Fit Lifestyle is a significant step after leaving the military. How did your Military training contribute to your approach in building your own business in health and fitness?

Before the military, I was active, always involved in fitness, particularly playing sports. The military elevated my fitness to the next level, providing discipline like no other. It taught me how to be strong both physically and mentally. When I came out, it felt like a no-brainer that this was not only something I wanted to do but something I NEEDED to do!

PJ, your story involves a challenging divorce and navigating co-parenting. Can you share some insights into the difficulties you face and the emotional toll it took on your children?

OMG, this could be a book! How long do we have? LOL.

Each of my two kids would honestly have their chapters. They each have their traumas and pain from watching their parents unable to co-parent. The truth is, my tribe lives with me, and each day brings a different story. It doesn’t get easier as they get older; it just gets a bit better every day.

For me, the hardest thing was watching my kids suffer. In return, it made me endure more trauma because I was tired of seeing my babies suffering.

At the end of the day, no parent wants to see their kids upset. They are my priority. Unfortunately, no matter how hard I tried with co-parenting, I always faced pushback.

What advice would you give to other divorced dads who might be going through similar struggles?

Whatever you do, DON’T GIVE UP. Fight for your kids. Find a good support system, know the law, know your rights, ask questions, do the research, but never give up.

The concept behind your podcast is intriguing. What inspired you to launch “Raw and real Vet Talk: and what topics do you hope to address through the podcast?

I have A LOT to say about many “Raw and Real Topics” that I feel are important to discuss. Too many people are afraid to have hard conversations, and I felt like this was a place where not only could we have open dialogue and a little debate, but it’s also a way of letting people know they aren’t alone. From single dads, divorce, mental health, addiction, politics, and more, I will only speak on things that I have personally gone through.

What I have enjoyed so far is having guests on, maybe someone we saw on TV, in the movies, or an author—just anyone from the entertainment industry with a story and a past that no one really knows, or they h ave never been given the opportunity to share their journey.

If I can help even one person who is having a hard time just by them listening to my podcast, that is a reward in itself for me.

How do you think sharing your personal stories, especially on difficult topics, can contribute to healing and awareness?

The simplest way to put this is, I don’t want to see people make the same mistakes I made. I want my journey to help save people from thinking there is no way out of tough situations. People need to realize there are a ton of resources out there, and help is available.

What changes would you like to see in the legal system to better support fathers in custody battles?
ACTION, NOT WORDS!!! If there is undeniable evidence that the father has done nothing wrong—lies, manipulation, fabrication, deceit—then all should be shut down and no longer dragged out. Why should the father suffer to get money into lawyers’ pockets?

Now, let me be clear. I don’t want to see any parent be treated wrong. If the mother is right and the father is wrong, I feel the same way. But we are discussing dads right now and the system and how difficult it is for fathers to really be seen and heard.

There must be consequences when a parent is being dragged through the mud and their name ruined because the other parent wants their way.

So, yes, I want to see actions, not words, not broken promises, not a parent going broke when it’s as clear as day they are right.

Your journey involves a significant focus on self-love and doing what makes you happy. How did you learn to prioritize your well-being and what advice do you have for others in finding balance and happiness?

I learned how to block everything out and put myself first. I took care of my body by hitting the weights, working out, and eating healthy. I put my all into my kids. At the same time, I am human, and I have bad days, but I don’t allow one bad day to continue for days.

To find balance and happiness, you must really know what you want for yourself. You have to find the things that make you want to be better. A job, working out, a better meal plan—it doesn’t have to be complicated. Surround yourself with people who want to see you do better. Just rid yourself of the negativity in your life and put yourself first. It’s not selfish; it’s growth.

Behind the Laughter: Eddie’s Unconventional Path from Broadway Dreams to Comedy Fame

Born and raised in the NW Washington D.C. Eddie Liles is a comedian, actor, writer, and producer that will not let you forget him. Standing 6’5″  300lbs, this guy’s laugh is infectious and genuine.  He is also one of the co-hosts of the ” I’ma Get In Trouble” Podcast.

Eddie grew up wanting to be a theatre actor on Broadway but quickly found that he was better at making people laugh. After playing football and studying theater at Bowie State University. He went into multiple jobs as a Hospitality Manager where he fell into the routine of hating working for other people but always making others laugh. All of this has added to his “I can do anything” “Bully” style of comedy and storytelling. He shines on stage like no and will have you talking about his performance for weeks.

In 2012, made the decision to focus on becoming one of the best stand-up comedians in the world, and he has been doing just that. Eddie has been featured on Multiple Festivals across the Country. He is a regular feature performer for Tony Woods. He has also opened for Dave Chappelle, David Keochner, Tim Dillan, Joe Clair, Rich Vos, Shane Gillis, Donnell Rawlings, and many others.

As CEO of Broken Diamond Comedy LLC. Eddie has produced some of the biggest independent Comedy events in the DMV. He has worked Dupont Underground: Comedy and Events, Baltimore Comedy Festival, DC Comedy Festival,  a host of venues, and Comedy clubs.

We had the opportunity of sitting down with Eddie to discuss his background, influences, entrepreneurship and more:

Eddie, could you share a bit about your background and upbringing in D.C., and how it has influenced your career in comedy?

My uncle E-boogie is a comedian and started when I was really young. I just saw how people loved it when he was around. Being a singer and musician at a young age made me crave the stage, but size and strength pushed me in a different direction. When I got hurt playing sports, I wanted nothing more than to be back on stage. I tried comedy, and I fell head over heels for it. My comedy is just my stories throughout my life. I try to connect them to different cultures and backgrounds in the funniest way.

You originally aspired to be a theatre actor on Broadway. How did you make the transition to comedy, and what motivated that shift?

My size took dancing from me, lol. But I also stopped singing, and that muscle takes a lot to train back up. Comedy luckily gives me the same feeling stage acting does. I’m luckier, though, because I get to tell my story and not just another writer’s. I still long for the stage and will get back to it more often, but comedy has become my main focus.

You’ve described your comedy as having an “I can do anything” and “Bully” style. Can you elaborate on what that means and how it shows up in your performances?

When you’re making things funny, you can talk about anything. When you’re writing, you can do anything in the wording. It’s fun to create the story in the eyes of the audience. My size is my bullying. My voice makes you pay attention, and my size keeps your eye. My jokes make you have a good time. I’m not as fearful of what I want to talk about. Mostly I’m good with myself, so opinions only pass the time for me.

You’ve had the opportunity to open for some prominent comedians like Dave Chappelle and Donnell Rawlings. Can you share some memorable experiences from those moments?

The hang is awesome; you realize quickly every question you have, they’ve already been asked. So you just learn to vibe, chill, and fully relax. You meet an inspiration, and all they want is to relax. It makes you more relaxed. Then you realize this job is more fun than you ever thought, as long as you just relax.

As the CEO of Broken Diamond Comedy LLC, you’ve been involved in producing major comedy events. Could you highlight some of the most significant projects or events you’ve participated in in the DMV area?

DC Comedy Festival and Baltimore Comedy Festival are just amazing. In different cities but a lot of the same players. It’s dope being able to run around with peers that saw you as just Eddie. No matter how much recognition I get, I still am able to chill with my day ones. That’s what those are made for. We came from these scenes, and we get to go back and watch them grow from our sacrifices.

Your podcast, “I’ma Get In Trouble,” has gained attention. Can you tell us more about the podcast?

The podcast was started with Loy Lee and myself. With us both moving to different areas, it helps us give different perspectives on what’s happening in the US. With our differences in backgrounds, it’s just an added layer. When we brought on Terrance, it was like boom! East coast/ midwest/ and west coast all just having fun. We plan on getting more episodes out and a new format. But we are happy with what we were able to build.

What advice do you have for aspiring comedians looking to make a name for themselves in the comedy world, especially in the competitive stand-up comedy scene?

If you don’t have tough skin or need validation, don’t do this. You have to understand it takes time. And no matter how funny I am today, you are nowhere near as funny as you will be tomorrow. So just enjoy the journey.

From Trumpet to Soulful Tunes: Tony Mohogany‘s Musical Journey

Tony Mohogany: a dark-colored hardwood native to America, known for producing warm-sounding musical instruments. Tony Mohogany: a soul-stirring, melodically gifted singer, a native of New Orleans, LA, known for making people care about love again. How does he make people care about love again?

By creating honest, personal reflections of the music that exist within him. Tony Mohogany is filling a void, one that has been vacant for some time. While most people have shifted their focus to the material side of living, not enough attention is given to the foundations that make us wake up in the morning… to love and be loved in return. Tony Mohogany is ushering in that return to where a song helped people say the things they wanted to but didn’t know how. A renaissance man for this new millennium, Tony takes the time and devotes the necessary attention to making eternal music meant to be enjoyed for ages, just like the music of his many influences.

Not too long ago, the airwaves were filled with the talents of Curtis Mayfield, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, and the list goes on. Their songs defined relationships, whether beginning or ending. They spoke to our souls with passionate lyrics and eternal vocal performances. And a young Tony Mohogany was there to soak it all in. Digging through his uncle’s vinyl collection as a child, Tony discovered musical gems and found a passion that would guide his life’s steps for years to come. “Music was just always around me,” says Tony. “I can remember at a very young age, standing in my mother’s living room, listening to music and saying to myself, ‘I’m going to be an entertainer.’ It was that simple for me. I think I just always knew.”

Following a move to Champlin, MN, Tony Mohogany would find himself back in New Orleans at Delgado Community College. It was there that he steadfastly latched onto the music bug that had bitten him so long ago. After joining a harmony group at the school, Tony began entering and winning talent shows as a solo artist. In time, Tony Mohogany would be sharing his talents with local New Orleans artists, writing songs, and performing hooks, all while furthering his musical portfolio.

Currently, he is working on a mixtape to share his work with a larger sect of music listeners, and just as he’s done since the beginning of his musical journey, he will continue to push farther and harder to share his love with all who are willing to accept it.

We had the opportunity of sitting down with Artist Tony Mohogany to discuss music, passion and his creativity those go on behind the scenes:

When exactly did you realize you had a passion for music?
I would say since I was nine or ten years old. When I was nine, I started taking lessons. I do play the trumpet for my church, and I have been playing it on and off ever since. I’m singing now. I try to keep an open mind and listen to all genres of music, but my favorite is R&B.

Take us back to growing up in New Orleans, LA. Did anyone special introduce you to the sound of music?
I was born and raised in New Orleans, LA. My mother kept the radio on AM 940 WYLD. That station played every gospel song there was, current and former gospel music. She would sing at home and traveled with various choirs singing solos in church and musicals. I began to learn that every song had a purpose or a meaning, like medicine for pain in a specific area, and she was the licensed physician who taught me how to use that medicine for whatever problem I had.

Who would you consider to be your musical influences?

My musical influences are The Cotton Twins, Darrel Coley, Tone’x, Tank, Joe Thomas, Stevie Wonder, Tyrese Gibson, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Michael Jackson, and Prince.

If you could use four words to describe your musical sound, what would they be and why?

Meaningful, Soothing, Extraordinary, and Exciting. Why? Because it’s my life experiences, and it’s me telling you about them while living them. My music is different, and it is a powerful force that stands out. As I have those experiences in life, my goal is for it to help someone else who may feel alone and remind them that there is someone out here who’s relatable.

Tell us about your latest project?

My latest project will be more about life and the hard choices one has to make in the manner of life commitments. You might have lived life but not like I have. It will be fun in there, but some serious moments too. In this project, I’m going to try to put everything I’ve been through thus far in my life. We only get one shot sometimes to tell our story and make it matter to someone. This is my opportunity to make that happen.

What message do you hope listeners take away from your music?

Joy, satisfaction, and relatability.

What is next for you? Where do you see your music in the next 2-3 years?

I want my music to be more in film and radio. I also want to get into acting! I want to act in movies, TV, and theater. I love the arts and enjoy all aspects of live performance.

He has been touring the globe with a number of these legendary artists, but also as a
bandleader with his own original project, The CieL Experience. He continues to impress audiences around the world with his high–energy performances, distinct styles of improvisation, and original compositions.

What inspired your start into music?

What inspired me to start playing music was all of the amazing music that surrounded me at a very young age. Growing up in Miami, where so many cultures collide, I had the opportunity to experience the music of many islands and countries that caught my attention early on. My biggest influences that made me fall in love with music were my dad’s vinyl records and tapes, which consisted of a wide range of different artists and genres such as Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder, and many traditional Haitian artists like Tabou Combo, Skah Shah, and Les Frères Dejean, to name a few. Later on, when I got to high school, I heard the unique saxophone sounds of Dexter Gordon and Coleman Hawkins, and that’s when I fell in love with Black American music and the art of improvisation. So, I got to work on studying and playing the music.

If you could describe your musical sound in five words, what would they be and why?

Cinematic, emotional, energetic, soulful, and versatile are words that describe the CieL Experience’s sound. Our music is cinematic because every composition reflects a real-life experience from my own life. It’s emotional because it takes listeners on a journey, each melody combined with harmonies that evoke deep emotions. All our songs are intentional; for example, if they are happy, they are genuinely joyful, and when they are sad, they convey true sorrow. When we sing about love, everyone in the band mentally connects with that specific feeling and emotion, and it shows in our performance and approach to every tune. All the material we draw from for composing is deeply personal and authentic, so audiences can always feel that emotion when we play. Due to my deep cultural influences, our band can perform a wide range of genres with respect and integrity to the culture. Whether in recordings or live performances, our sound truly offers an unforgettable experience.

You are what the world considers a teaching artist, can you share a little about what you do?

As a teaching artist, I have worked in many schools in South Florida. Currently, I am the jazz instructor at the Miami Arts Charter School, where I focus on jazz performance, executing the style, jazz theory, and jazz history. I have also provided guidance on how to navigate the music business and realistically approach a career in music. Additionally, I have performed, taught masterclasses, and conducted clinics as a Jazz Ambassador in collaboration with the US Department of Educational & Cultural Affairs, working with US Embassies in Haiti, Costa Rica, Mexico, Latvia, Dushanbe, Tajikistan, and Tanzania.

You often travel the world teaching and performing, can you share how these experiences impact your music and creativity?

Traveling the world to teach and perform has transformed my perspective on music and its unifying power, transcending differences in language, appearance, and social status. In foreign countries, music always brings people together, and this has given me a profound appreciation for humanity and the understanding that my music touches people from diverse backgrounds. It deepens my gratitude for every note I play, record, and include in a composition.

Tell us about your latest project?

My latest project, titled “Influences,” has been in the works for about five years. This project highlights all the events, people, and music that have shaped my life up to this point. “Influences” was recorded with my collective, The CieL Experience, featuring Elijah Gee on keys, Chris Patsis on bass, Jephthe Jean-Charles on drums, and Jose Romero on trumpet. The music is eclectic, making it challenging to fit into a specific genre box. It can be described as jazz/world fusion, but ultimately, it’s just music for everyone. Each collective member contributed to the creative and compositional process, resulting in a beautiful team effort that we believe listeners will thoroughly enjoy.

What message do you hope listeners take away from your platform?

I aspire for listeners to visit my platform and feel inspired, regardless of their backgrounds or life experiences. I want them to recognize that they can take their experiences and create something positive for themselves and others. It’s important for people to see the value of hard work, consistency, and leading with love. As an artist, I genuinely feel that I was born to serve others with my talents, and I have a deep love for community. I want people to leave my platform and interactions feeling happy and inspired, whether they hear my music or simply spend time in my presence.

What is next for you, where do you see your platform in the next 2-3 years?

What’s next for me is completing this album and taking it on tour. I would love to share this music overseas in Europe and embark on a US tour to explore cities I haven’t yet visited with my collective. Additionally, I believe this music tells my story, making it a great soundtrack for motion pictures. I’d love to see my music placed in films and TV shows. My involvement in the community to promote music education and collaboration across different arts disciplines in Miami will continue, possibly in my own multi-purpose building. I will persist in working toward my goals and savoring the journey one day at a time.

We had the amazing opportunity of sitting down with NBFQuay to discuss music, his creativity along with his plans for the future.

What inspired you to get your start in music?

Growing up as a native of Detroit, I was fortunate to be immersed in a city renowned for its distinctive music style and an abundance of exceptional talent. From the schools I attended in my neighborhood and even within my own family, the presence of musical prowess was palpable. It was almost impossible not to be captivated and inspired by the musical energy that surrounded me. As a result, my interest in music naturally developed, and I began to explore my own creative abilities in this realm. Witnessing numerous local artists from Detroit rise to become world-renowned figures only fueled my motivation to pursue my own musical aspirations.

The success stories of these artists served as constant reminders that dreams can be turned into reality with hard work and determination. Seeing their journeys unfold, I felt compelled to keep pushing forward, honing my skills, and striving for excellence. The vibrant music scene of Detroit became a constant source of inspiration, spurring me to embrace my own unique voice and contribute to the legacy that this city has fostered.

The wealth of talent in Detroit not only shaped my musical journey but also instilled a deep sense of pride in my roots. I am grateful for the opportunities and the creative environment that Detroit provided me, and I continue to carry the city’s rich musical heritage with me as I forge my own path in the industry.

Tell us about growing up in Detroit, How has the motor city impacted who you are as an artist?

Growing up in Detroit was a transformative experience for me, filled with cherished family moments and unforgettable memories. Music, acting as the constant soundtrack to my life, played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today. While Detroit is renowned as the Motor City, it also holds the distinction of being the home of Motown, the birthplace of many music greats. This city’s deep-rooted musical heritage influenced me profoundly. I was fortunate to witness the emergence of global icons like Aaliyah, who not only left an indelible mark on the music industry but also created an atmosphere of creativity within the city. The impact of music extended beyond Motown, encompassing the realm of rap as well. Detroit has produced remarkable talents such as Blade Icewood, Cheddar Boys, Big Sean, Eminem, Proof, J Dilla, Xzibit, Mc Breed, and Big Herk, whose contributions have resonated far beyond the city limits. As I reflect on my adolescence, I realize that music served as the soundtrack to countless memories, shaping my identity and fueling my passion for creativity.

What challenges did you have to overcome to get where you are today?

Just sticking to not rapping a certain way to mimic another artist who became successful and finding my own sound without taking that shortcut. Also, the challenges of dealing with many platforms seeking to capitalize off of indie artists without it being beneficial for the artist- and creating a buzz for myself.

What has been the most rewarding part of your journey?

Being able to perform, and having platforms like this and other notable platforms Spotlight me and my music. Thank You! Dropping my first EP No Chaser and getting critically acclaimed reviews, and support. Forming N.B.F and dropping merch.

Resilience and Redemption: Courtney Starks’ Story of Overcoming Kidney Failure

Courtney Starks is an extraordinary individual who has defied the odds and emerged victorious through unimaginable challenges. Having overcome kidney failure himself, he has penned an inspiring book titled “My Kidneys Failed Me But God Didn’t! A Journey of Growth & Rediscovery,” which serves as a testament to his resilience and determination.

Courtney seeks to empower and encourage others, assuring them that they can conquer any obstacle that comes their way.

Through his own story, he aims to inspire countless children and young adults currently battling life on dialysis, just as he once did.

What was the inspiration behind your new book “My Kidneys Failed Me But God Didn’t! A Journey of Growth & Rediscovery,”

I had originally received my kidney and tried to forget it ever happened. Little did I know that my story would be the one to touch lives. Not only was it a healing journey for me, but I wrote the book to inspire others that are going through similar experiences or struggling with other sorts of challenges that no matter what it may look like, God won’t fail you.

What challenges did you have to overcome to get where you are today?

I had to be honest about what I was going through. I had to hold myself accountable for the things I was doing wrong in my life to get to that place. Not living a healthy lifestyle, taking my young age for granted, my stubbornness and ignorance to my illnesses. Once I got a hold of reality and had the hard conversations with myself, my life changed.

What has been the most rewarding part of your journey?

To be able to share my story. My biggest fear at the time was not being alive to share my testimony and having other people speaking on my behalf. God allowed me to live and share my story with the world in hopes to inspire and encouraging.

If you could tribute your career to one person or thing who would be and why?

It would be my grandmother. She always allowed me to chase my dreams and has always been my number one supporter. She never let me wallow in my sickness or feel sorry for myself. She pushed me to continue fighting for my life. I wouldn’t be here without her.

What tips do you have for men around the world with a story that needs to be shared, with no idea on where to start?

Most times we want to share our stories once it’s perfected. I challenge all men to share what you can now! The place you’re speaking from may save someone else’s life. Our stories are never ending. Allow someone’s life to be forever changed based on your willingness to be transparent in the moment.

What does success look like for you?
Success is planting seeds in the lives of others and getting the opportunity to see them sprout into something wonderful.

What is next for you?

More Hosting gigs, More Community Events, and a possible live talk show? Stay tuned!

What is your definition of a Man who hustles?
My definition of a Man who Hustles is someone who’s willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that they and their family is provided for, successful, and wins together. A man who’s willing to face the stigma placed on men head on to create a lasting legacy that will live on for generations.

Guided by Faith: Prophet Sherman Harris Jr.’s Journey to Embracing Faith

As a humble servant and prophet, Sherman Harris, Jr. shares the often-whispered utterances of truth and direct revelations from God to inspire and encourage others to walk in their own truth. The journey through life can be challenging without divine guidance. Prophet Harris wants to share his story of how he found his path to becoming the True Man of God he is today. From listening to God to overcoming choices in life that some may perceive as failures but were truly blessings, to laying the foundation of a marriage that has grown stronger over the years, Harris, Jr. strives to walk in faith and under the guidance of the Word of God. As he often says, “The truth does not need defending,” and he lives by his truth.

Please tell us a little bit about your message.
When I think about it. When God shares or gives it to me, I want to share how good God is even when you’re doing things that you are not supposed to do. God is still excellent. I started doing a lot of things I had no business doing. Not knowing that God was still in my life because I felt like I was just lucky.

I did a lot of wrong things, and He covered me the whole time. I did not have a clue that it was him. Once I got a relationship with him it changed everything in the beginning to change everything.

Tell us about your background and how you started your journey.
I was a bad little kid. I got put out of Saint Joseph’s In the 6th grade. My mother came and whipped me in front of the whole class. I didn’t want to pay attention to anybody. It was Sherman’s way or no way. I don’t want to say I was a bully but it had to be my way or not way. If anyone said something about my lip, I fought. I fought until I was in the 9th grade.

What were the top three mistakes you made starting your journey, and what did you learn from them?
– Not understanding God in my life earlier.
– Thinking I knew it all.
– Not thinking I was worthy to be used by God.

What was your first business idea, and what did you do with it? What were some of the lessons you had? Why is that important?
As a club owner, I had money with no plan. People were stealing from me. I trusted everybody. I had to experience all of that. I’m thinking that everyone who is laughing and giggling with me would do right and they were stealing the whole time.

I never thought I would be broke. I was getting money so much that you know they took it or whatever this is but you know I never dreamed I would be broke. It never crossed my mind. It is not always the plan. I know that is going to mess some of you up. We think it is a plan, but the plan is no good without His plan. That’s number one. We’ll do our plan and after our plan get in trouble then we go to God for His plan.

We don’t go to Him first and ask him what direction to do and how to do it you know I think we’re afraid of how He is gonna tell us or he might tell us not yet and we wanna do it right now. He doesn’t know the reason why we wait so long.

I would tell any new person to ask God for your directions. Ask Him and be patient enough to listen. Do not act if you’re not gonna listen, Do not ask God if you’re not gonna listen. After you then do exactly what He said. It is gonna be a process but I’m telling you it’ll be well worth it.

How do you feel about how marriage and relationships are viewed and treated nowadays?

The Holy Spirit started bothering me, messing with me, irritating me because I did not wanna get married.  I never thought in a million years, marriage could be this great.   If I didn’t get a relationship with God it probably wouldn’t have been where is right now. I think the relationship that I have with God, and the relationship she has with God has saved our marriage and made our marriage what it is.

I don’t think that any one of us could be where we are right now if we don’t have a relationship with God.  I think that really is the total for us in marriage.

I think marriages have a bad communication gap. They don’t communicate.  I think marriages can communicate more. If you want to marriage to be successful you got to communicate more.  God first and then communication if you want your marriage to be great right now and it could be even better than you ever imagined with a relationship with God and communication.

I do not think people are serious about marriage.  They do not have a clue of what the vows mean.  When the preacher says, until death do us part, they do not understand what death do you part means. The first argument that gets in, they are getting a divorce.  The first argument or the first time he does something, or she does something she is not supposed to do and they are ready to get a divorce. alarm when people get in right now and again the devils the first or the first time you did she had not been adored I’m ready to get a device that you need trying to work it out not taking masters.

What advice would you give to men who are unsure about committing?
If you are unsure, you cannot commit. It will not work. If you go into a relationship thinking you are unsure, it won’t work. If you are unsure, do not commit that’s my best advice.

I made my mind up in 2000 that’s what I want to do, but I had never sense to proposition God for six months. I said God, let me go to 2000. In 1999 when He first told me. I asked him for six more months. Most of the things I said to God, I have done. God had enough patience with me and let me go through there after calling me in 1999. I asked him to let me finish whatever I was doing, and I was able to give it up.

What are the top 5 things a person who hears your message should take away?
I will speak the truth.
However, God directs me, I will make sure I always follow the Holy Spirit. I want to make sure that I always do what the Holy Spirit says to do, regardless of the numbers. If there are 10 people and you’re not motivated until there are 100 people. If there are 2 people present, I want to speak the same thing if there are millions. He said where two or three are gathered together, I will be in the midst. I don’t want numbers to discourage me from speaking to people.

I believe that everybody at the time they listen to my message I believe from the bottom of my heart that I think that things were changing their lives. I don’t think God would have you listen to my messages without changing you. I just don’t. Something I will say will bless you. If you listen to me for 10-15 minutes and do not get something, the devil is a lie.

You will be blessed. follow the Holy Spirit change will occur and they’ll be blessed
Faith without works is dead. Without faith, it is impossible to please Him.

Til I Get Back To You With Singer – Songwriter Alvin Garrett

Alvin Garrett, the talented singer-songwriter behind the Grammy-nominated hit “Something’s Different This Time” and numerous chart-topping songs is once again making waves in the music industry with his latest release, “Til I Get Back to You.” This soulful and captivating single has been climbing the Billboard charts, leaving fans and critics alike eagerly anticipating the arrival of his forthcoming album, “SFTY.”

An Alabama native, Garrett has amassed multiple awards with his melodic vocal lines combined with Smooth Jazz and Sultry R&B, including a Grammy nomination, a Soul Train Award, Dove, and Stellar Awards. Garrett’s impressive career has ushered him to the forefront of Soul and R&B as a professional bassist, producer, arranger, and songwriter for Joe, Kelly Rowland, Fantasia, Ruben Studdard, Jordan Knight, Deitrick Haddon, and many more.

Inspired by the depth of human connection, “Til I Get Back to You” effortlessly blends poignant lyrics with Garrett’s signature soulful sound. The song delves into themes of longing and the power of love, resonating with audiences worldwide. With its infectious melodies and heartfelt delivery, this single has quickly become a fan favorite and is garnering significant attention on radio airwaves.
With his remarkable talent, Grammy recognition, and the early success of “Til I Get Back to You,” Garrett is poised to take the music industry by storm once again.

We had the unique opportunity of sitting down with Alvin to discuss the inspiration behind his music, his life challenges, and what is to come for his career.

What was the inspiration behind your latest single, “Til I get back to You”?

In 2022, I took some time to refresh and reflect so that I could discover the next move for my music career. During that time, I was able to find a fresh new sound and vibe. In this song, I wanted to capture the feeling of being locked away from someone or something you love, and the song turned out beautifully.

What challenges did you have to overcome to get where you are today?

As a music entrepreneur, I’ve had to overcome the same challenges that most successful business owners face: lack of capital, lack of other people’s belief in your dream, lack of access, and more. I had to continue finding ways to stay in the game long enough for my vision to take shape. In the music business, people don’t jump on a sitting train…they all want to get on board once it’s moving. I had to find a way to make it move.

What has been the most rewarding part of your journey?

My greatest reward has been to see the impact that my music has made on my fans and listeners. I had to go through a lot to make sure that my music was heard, but the testimonies have made it all worthwhile.

If you could tribute your career to one person or thing, who would be and why?

I’d have to give my parents credit for teaching me how to be a man of faith and persistence. I know you said “one person,” but they always tell me they are one…so I have to give them both credit for their influence and guidance.

What tips do you have for aspiring artists looking to break into the music industry?

Every artist should embrace their own journey. Too many people try and replicate someone else’s story, and that is not advisable. Find your voice, your sound, and your story…and stick to it.

What does success look like for you?

To me, success is achieved when you begin the journey…not at the end of the road. I find success each time I conceive a new idea, hear a new song concept, or start a new venture. I believe that accomplishments are inevitable if you keep moving.

What is next for you?

“‘ Til I Get Back To You” is the lead single for my upcoming album, SFTY (Safety), and I am continuing to push and prepare for this next phase of my career.

What is your definition of a Man who hustles?

To me, the hustle is about going the extra mile when everyone else expects you to stop. It’s about waking up early enough to visualize your day before you get after it. A man who hustles is a man who is focused and energized by his purpose…and the pursuit of his goals should reflect his commitment to that purpose.

A Promise To Love With Singer/Songwriter LeVelle

LeVelle is a Kansas City Native with an extensive resume working with Frankie Beverley & Maze, Anthony Hamilton, Charlie Wilson, Tank, and Robin Thicke, to name a few.

With the summer release of his new album, “Promise To Love,” LeVelle continues to bring his fans the soulful tunes they love. From the hit single, “Only If,” to his current mid-tempo release, “Work It Out,” and the sure-to-be fan favorite, “Always,” featuring After 7, there’s sure to be something for everyone in this hit-filled album.

With appearances on the album from hitmakers After 7, Anthony Hamilton, Raheem DeVaughn, and Zacardi Cortez, LeVelle is showing listeners why the industry greats admire him.

We had the blessed opportunity of sitting down with LeVelle to discuss his latest album, his reach musical history, and what influences his soulful sound.

You have such a rich musical background. You’ve done so much. So let’s start from the beginning. How did you get your start in music? Like, where does that come from?

Doing all I can here in my hometown, performing everywhere, you know, and working my way up to know who’s the who and who’re the guys making the yeses and the noes. Them coming out watching me for years and then actually seeing my work and giving me a shot at the main stage. So my first major show was with the Bar-Kays and Charlie Wilson. But I went from performing at the local jazz district at the Blue Room with 75 to 150 to 200 people a night. I went from that to like 9-10,000 seat array. So it was indeed a blessing, but that was a period and putting in work and learning what I could, you know, at an early age and just really putting in a lot of work here in my hometown.

You have worked with many great vocalists in R&B. Can you share how those experiences have impacted you as an artist?

It’s been a blessing, you know, because I can genuinely say to everybody that God has allowed to be in my path, or I’ve been able to be in their path, they’ve done nothing but give me a shout or Allow me to grace the stage while they’re performing you know, it has driven me to the point to where you know, There’s no turning back no matter what I go through. This is part of my journey to fight through adversity and to keep pushing, and it’s because of, you know, some of the best have allowed me to be on their platform to where, you know, it gives me a drive where, you know, I can’t quit. It keeps me going. And it’s just a dream and some things I want to achieve. So you see, I can’t stop until I get there. And then, when I get there, I got to keep going.

So tell us more about your musical background. Who are your musical influences, and how does that show up in how you make your music, in your musical style?

I mean, as a child, or as a young man coming up, I’ve always enjoyed the REAL music and the influence and the impact that they had, you know, such as the Gap Band and the Frankie Beverly’s and May’s and the OJ’s and people like Jerald Levert, Keith Sweat. Coming up listening to those guys, the Dave Hollisters, the Tanks, it was like, I loved them all so well, where I could take a piece of each of them and put it in my memory bank. You get LaVelle, but you get a bit of Al Green simultaneously. You may hear me do something and be like, wow. That was because that was a guy that I looked up to. I just put it in the bank. And so those guys significantly influenced me to do what I do now.

Tell us about your latest album, Promise to Love. Take us through that creative process; what did that look like for you?

With the freshman album it was, my journey continued. I was faced with many adversities, you know, a lot of no’s. And you know, it just put me in a place to no matter what I was faced with, I had to keep pushing. So when Promise to Love came around, it allowed me to get back to that happy spot, that part of me where I wanted to let people know it’s cool and it’s okay to love again. It is okay to be there for your brother and your sister and get to that point where you can show love and, most importantly, gain respect for yourself and who you are. So Promise to Love is that album that my vow to you is that I will love you no matter what. I’m going to be there. And LaVell is LaVelle.

Promise to Love is your latest project, correct?

Promise to Love is the latest. It came out on the 9th. And, um, My Journey Continues was my previous album that was just out, you know, that was the actual album with me and Anthony Hamilton. So on this one. Then I even went to get my brother, Zicardy Cortez. We got one on here as well. Yes, Gospel Music! Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, I had to do it. So just a great body of work, and everything just came together the way it needed to.

How did the message change from your last album to this one?I know this one is like a promise to love no matter what, but how does your message change? What do you hope people take away from this album?

My main goal is to let people know no matter what, you know, always love yourself. When you do that, everything else will always fall into place. And, you know, just good karma, what you put in the atmosphere comes back to you. So, I want people to know that when you promise to love yourself, no one else can tear you down. What can we expect next from you? I know you just released this album, but what else do you have on the horizon? Right now, we’re setting up to get out to the communities, touring, shows, and bringing the face with the names in the song, so I want people to know who I am. So that’s the goal now, is to get out here and bring that notoriety and let people know, this is Lavelle, that’s the guy that sings Fell in Love, or this is the guy that sings that. So, once we do that, we’re moving into a good spot.

I am excited to include your album when we post this article, so people can understand your message and why you put this body of music out. How can we connect with you?

All digital platforms. All my social media is just LevelleBKC. That’s L-E-V-E-L-L-E-B-K-C. You got me right there. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, website is just LevelleB. Please hit that follow button and send me a message, and I reply to all my messages. I like to stay engaged and in touch with the family. I don’t call them fans; I call them family.

You can support and listen to LeVelle’s latest project whereever you get your music.
