Can you tell us about your journey to becoming an award-winning esthetician and spa owner?
I started offering facials and makeup services in my mom‘s living room in 2017. Over the past 6 years, I moved my business from my hometown to a suite in a new city in downtown White Plains, New York. My goal when I started my business was to help people learn about plant-based skincare benefits for skin health. I began formulating and retailing my skincare products in 2023 and it allowed me to become recognized as Top 100 Woman in Business in 2023 for skincare education and formulations.
How did the idea for your children’s book, “My Melanin Skin Glows,” come about and what message do you hope to share with young readers?
The idea for my children’s book on skincare allows me to reach the younger generation and guide them to understand the importance of skincare, skin health, and self-confidence.
The message is for readers to care for their skin and learn how to manage struggles with various conditions. Especially, the importance of skin protection for melanin skin types. It’s never too young to start creating healthy skincare habits and encouraging personal hygiene for children.
What inspired you to formulate natural skincare products, and what sets your products apart?
I was inspired to develop my natural skincare products after seeing a lack of plant-based products catering to melanin skin conditions. I had struggled myself during the pandemic with hyperpigmentation and dark marks and wanted fast-acting products for even skin. I took a soap-making course and formulated what I needed which resulted in helping others. What sets my products apart are herbal ingredients that not only solve issues with hyperpigmentation and skin balance but also focus on skin wellness, creating a better relationship with skincare and self-care. My clients are using ingredients they can trust and experience the power of plants for skin transformation.
What was it like to be recognized as a neighborhood champion in partnership with American Express, and Clean Skin Club, and featured in Forbes?
Being recognized as a neighborhood champion in a new city, becoming a member of Forbes, and partnering with Clean Skin Club were all amazing milestones for my business providing more brand visibility and it allowed me to show that my community could depend on So Jazzed Esthetics to be a trusted resource for improved skin health through services, products, and education.
Could you tell us more about your recent participation in the Women Who Win event on The Vineyard, showcasing your bestselling soaps to Dr. Stacie NC Grant and other attendees?
My recent participation in the Women Who Win on the Vineyard event hosted by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated in partnership with JP Morgan & Chase Co., The Trailblazer Foundation, and Advancing Black Pathways was a groundbreaking opportunity for my business and experience as a member of the organization. I presented my skincare products to Dr. Stacy NC Grant, the International President for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated and it was an honor to present my products, share skincare education, and the importance of prioritizing skin health and self-care. I also had the opportunity to connect with panelists and members of the sorority seeking to raise the bar in black business with greater access to funding and resources that create expansion opportunities. None of this would have been possible without Soror Karin Wall, Founder of the Catching Royal Vibes who hosts an annual event at Martha’s Vineyard on Inkwell Beach.
How do you see So Jazzed Esthetics continuing to grow and make an impact in the skincare industry in the future?
I see So Jazzed Esthetics making an impact in the future in skincare education by creating opportunities through training for beginner or current licensed service providers to diversify their service-based income and grow their businesses by creating and selling their natural product lines.
What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs, especially those looking to break into the beauty and skincare industry?
My advice for aspiring entrepreneurs looking to break into the beauty and skincare industry is to seek to solve a problem. With this in mind, you will always have a business and an opportunity to serve others.
How do you balance running a successful spa, writing children’s books, formulating skincare products, and being actively involved in your community and professional organizations?
I like to consider myself a multi-passionate entrepreneur. I don’t believe there is balance. I have a burning desire to continue to tip the scale and make an impact. I’d say I’ve learned to live by a list of non-negotiables and negotiables.
What is your definition of a pretty woman who hustles?
My definition of a pretty woman who hustles is a woman who is a change-maker and holds magnetic energy that builds, inspires, and serves others daily.
