God’s Protection: Under His Wings, Girl, You’re Safe
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’”
— Psalm 91:1-2
Ladies, let’s have a heart-to-heart. Life, as beautiful as it is, can sometimes feel like a never-ending series of challenges. Between work, family, friendships, and the million little things on your plate, it’s easy to feel like you’re in the middle of a battlefield with no armor. But here’s the good news: you don’t need to fight this battle alone. You have something far greater than armor—you have God’s protection, and it’s time to lean into it.
The Almighty’s Secret Hideaway
Psalm 91:1-2 gives us a powerful image: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Think about that for a moment. This isn’t just a poetic expression; it’s a promise. God is inviting us to dwell—to live, to stay, to make our home—in his shelter. And when we do, we find ourselves resting in his shadow. Not just any shadow, but the shadow of the Almighty.
Now, I don’t know about you, but there’s something incredibly comforting about the idea of resting in God’s shadow. Picture it: God, the Creator of the universe, standing tall and mighty, casting a shadow of protection over you. It’s like being under the world’s safest umbrella during a storm. You might hear the thunder, see the lightning, and feel the wind, but none of it can touch you because you’re safe under his wings.
This isn’t just about physical protection, although that’s part of it. It’s also about emotional, mental, and spiritual protection. Life’s storms come in many forms—stress, anxiety, fear, heartbreak, financial struggles—but when we choose to dwell in God’s shelter, we find a refuge that shields us from all of it.
God’s Got Your Back (And Front, And Sides)
Let’s talk about that word “fortress.” A fortress is not just a shelter; it’s a stronghold, a place of absolute security. Think of it as the ancient version of a panic room, but infinitely more powerful. God is our fortress, meaning that when we trust in him, we are placing ourselves within walls that no enemy can penetrate.
But here’s where it gets even better: God’s protection isn’t just about building walls around you. He’s also actively watching over you. Imagine having a personal bodyguard who is always on duty, never taking a break, never distracted. That’s what God is for us. He’s not just a passive protector; He’s actively involved in keeping us safe.
And this protection isn’t limited to the big, scary threats that we can see. God is also protecting us from the unseen dangers—the doubts that creep into our minds, the worries that gnaw at our peace, and the spiritual attacks that try to pull us away from him. When you dwell in his presence, you’re not just living inside a fortress; you’re under constant, active protection.

The Myth of Superwoman
I know what you’re thinking. “But I’m strong. I can handle this.” And you are strong, girl! You’re amazing. But here’s the thing: even the strongest among us need help sometimes. The world loves to celebrate the idea of a “Superwoman”—the woman who does it all, never falters, never needs a break. But let’s be real: even Superwoman has her limits. She might be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but she still needs a moment to catch her breath.
Here’s the truth: we weren’t created to be Superwomen. We were created to be human, and that means we have limits. And that’s okay. In fact, it’s more than okay—it’s part of God’s design. He didn’t make us to handle everything on our own; He made us to rely on him.
Psalm 91 doesn’t say, “Whoever is strong enough to handle everything on their own will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” It says, “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High.” Dwelling means staying put. It means choosing to remain in God’s presence, day in and day out. It means admitting that maybe—just maybe—you don’t have to be the superhero all the time. It’s okay to let God be your fortress, to run to him when you’re feeling overwhelmed, scared, or just plain tired.
The Power of Trust
Trust is a powerful thing. It’s the foundation of any relationship, and our relationship with God is no different. When we trust God, we’re not just believing that he exists—we’re placing our lives in his hands, confident that he will protect and provide for us. But trust isn’t always easy, especially when life is throwing everything it has at us.
It’s in those moments, when we’re tempted to take control and do things our way, that we need to remind ourselves of who God is. He is our refuge and our fortress, our God in whom we trust. This isn’t just a nice-sounding phrase; it’s a declaration of faith. It’s saying, “God, I trust you to handle this. I trust you to protect me, to guide me, and to give me the strength I need.”
Trusting God means letting go of the need to be in control. It means acknowledging that, yes, you are strong, but HE is stronger. It means stepping back and letting him fight your battles. And when you do that, you’ll find that the weight you’ve been carrying starts to lift. You’ll find peace in the midst of chaos, strength in your weakness, and protection in your vulnerability.
Practical Steps to Dwell in God’s Protection
Now, let’s get practical. How do we actually dwell in God’s protection? How do we make sure we’re living in his shelter and resting in his shadow?
Here are a few steps you can take:
- Start Your Day with God: Before you dive into the demands of the day, take a few moments to center yourself in God’s presence. Pray, read a scripture, or just sit quietly and invite him into your day. This sets the tone for the rest of your day and reminds you that you’re not walking alone.
- Speak God’s Promises: Whenever you feel fear or anxiety creeping in, speak Psalm 91:1-2 out loud. Declare it over your life: “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Let these words be a shield around you, reminding you of God’s protection.
- Practice Surrender: Throughout the day, when challenges arise, consciously choose to surrender them to God. It might be as simple as saying, “God, I give this to you. I trust you to handle it.” The more you practice surrender, the easier it becomes to let go of control.
- Lean on Your Community: God often uses the people around us to provide protection and support. Don’t be afraid to lean on your friends, family, and church community. Share your burdens, ask for prayer, and allow others to be part of God’s protection in your life.
- Reflect on His Faithfulness: Take time to reflect on how God has protected you in the past. Whether it was a small moment or a major event, remembering his faithfulness strengthens your trust in his ongoing protection.
Your Spiritual Assignment
This week, I want to challenge you to really lean into God’s protection. Here’s your spiritual assignment:
Practice “The Pause.” Whenever you feel your stress levels rising, when the kids are screaming, when work is overwhelming, or when that voice in your head starts telling you that you have to do it all, I want you to pause. Take a deep breath, and remind yourself of Psalm 91:1-2.
Say it out loud if you can: “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Let those words sink in. Let them be the reminder that you’re not alone in this—God’s got you covered.
Stepping Forward in Faith
If you haven’t already, it’s time to make God your refuge. Start your day by asking him to be your fortress, to protect you from whatever comes your way. And then, trust Him to do it. Give him the worries, the fears, the anxieties that creep in during the day. And when you do, watch how he provides, how he shields you, and how he gives you the peace that passes all understanding.
We’re all in this together, navigating the ups and downs of life. But the beauty of it all is that we don’t have to do it alone. God is with us, offering his protection, his peace, and his love every step of the way.
So, go ahead and let go of the need to be Superwoman. Instead, dwell in God’s shelter, rest in his shadow, and trust that he is your refuge and fortress. Because under his wings, girl, you’re safe.
