Cecily Wilborn is Ready to Take Southern Soul Higher with “I Need The Blues”

Southern Soul is having a moment — and Cecily Wilborn is leading the charge. With her heartfelt lyrics, electric stage presence, and unstoppable energy, Cecily has become a rising name in the genre. Her new single “I Need The Blues” dropped April 25, marking her first release under the legendary Blackground Records 2.0. In this Pretty Women Hustle Magazine exclusive interview, she reflects on her growth, her creative process, and why she’s just getting started.

How does your new single, “I Need The Blues,” reflect your life today?
It’s my favorite song right now because it gives me peace. It’s what I call a “happy blues” song — a place to escape when things feel overwhelming. Life isn’t perfect, but music gives me shelter.

What was it like signing with Blackground Records 2.0?
It’s surreal. This is what I’ve prayed for. I’ve put in the work, and to finally have someone say “yes” to me — that’s the moment. I’m here to prove myself.

Any dream artists you’d like to work with?
Absolutely! Fantasia, Tank, PJ Morton, Morgan Wallen, Adam Levine — my list is long and ever-growing.

You earned a music production degree from Full Sail University. What’s the biggest takeaway?
Confidence. I came into the program with real-world experience, but now I can walk into any room and speak the language. That makes a huge difference as a woman in this industry.

“Southern Man” made a huge splash with 13.6 million streams. What did that success mean to you?
It meant people felt the song. That’s the goal. The challenge now is topping that — but I’m up for it.

You’ve played iconic venues — The Apollo, Essence Festival, BB King’s Stage. Which moment stands out most?
The Essence Festival Competition was pivotal. Winning two events, getting to try out at the Apollo, and then actually performing there? It was magical. Everything started in New Orleans.

How does your current music compare to your Kuntry Gurl Playlist era?
It’s deeper. I’m talking about real issues — relationships, healing, sisterhood. This album is a conversation with other women. It’s raw and real.

What keeps you grounded off-stage?
Fishing! I’m also thinking of picking up gardening or painting, but fishing helps me clear my head.

Three words to describe your journey so far?
Unpredictable. Challenging. Rewarding.

Final message to your fans?
Thank you for rocking with me. Every stream, every share, every word of encouragement — it means everything. I hope my music inspires someone the way music inspired me.
