Mentally, a Safe Space
2026 has entered with a bang, with the foot heavy on the gas. The one thing that people should be mindful of this year is protecting their mental health.
“The new phrase is protecting your peace, but while protecting your peace, also protect your mental health. Get a therapist, someone who can be a safe space and give you advice to help you get through the tough days”, says Shirlonda Shepard, LPC .
What makes Shepard’s approach to mental health so revolutionary is her insistence on redefining what strength means in the Black community. For too long, strength has meant silence. It’s meant suffering alone. It’s meant to carry generational trauma without complaint. It’s meant to be everyone’s rock while slowly crumbling inside.
Shepard is calling for a new definition.
“We’re so much more than struggle, survival, and strength,” she insists. “We deserve to be whole. We deserve to be well. We deserve to heal.”
Her practice creates a special space for that healing, a safe space for Black men and women to acknowledge their pain, to voice their fears, to admit they don’t have all the answers. Space for families to process the unique trauma of loving someone who serves. Space for individuals to bridge the gap between who they’ve been and who they’re becoming.
“As you grow, as life changes, not everyone knows how to move with the changes,” she reflects. “Having someone who can help walk you through and not be biased, but help you and challenge you, that really does matter.”
Shepard values the art of protecting your mind and encourages you to do the same.
