2021 Business to Watch – Coble’s Landing

Meet Shawanda Coble, Owner of Coble’s Landing – Coble’s Landing is the perfect example of a safe space that is leaps and bounds outside of the original concept. Owned by Rex and Shawanda Coble of Charlotte, NC; Coble’s Landing is 25 acres of natural, untouched land that has been transformed into the ultimate safe space. Like most families that loved the outdoors, the Coble’s would frequent public areas to hike, fish, and enjoy the time along with their children but it began to be a little hard to ignore the disparities within the outdoor community and People of Color. While the “Nature Gap” was no surprise to the Coble’s, they were not going to allow it from keeping the experience from their family. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Rex was forced to take some time off from his successful barbershop in Charlotte and had time to spend in his hometown of Burnsville, NC. As he returned to his roots, he saw an opportunity to fill a void. Not less than five minutes from where Rex grew up was an available mass amount of land that held every element that the Coble family loved about the outdoors. After researching the land and planning out how the space would serve a purpose to the community, the Coble’s purchased the acres in October of 2020 owning what would be the first Black-Owned nature preserve in the southeast and the second on the entire east coast.

What is the name of your business?
Coble’s Landing

Why is your business a business to watch in 2021?
Coble’s Landing was created to be a safe space for people of color to enjoy nature. Our 25 acres will be able to host a variety of events for our community.

What inspired you to start your business?
To reclaim our land and create generational wealth. Owning land is one of the greatest forms of currency that is sustainable throughout future generations.

How did 2020 change your business? Was it for the better?
We were able to purchase 25 acres in 2020. While the world was in a pandemic we seized the opportunity to focus on clearing out the land and beginning to develop it little by little.

What lessons did you learn in your business in 2020?
Even in the face of adversity, an opportunity will present itself. 2020 allowed a lot of time for planning. We were forced to stay home and isolate ourselves from others. During those days of quarantine, a lot of research and planning was able to get completed.

What kind of impact do you want your business to leave on your client or customer?
We would like our guests to feel relaxed, safe, respected, and close to nature. This space will be available for a variety of cultural events.

Do you feel your product or service meets the needs of the market?
Absolutely. COVID19 has placed outdoor spaces as the most sought-after venue. Coble’s Landing is about an hour away from uptown Charlotte, which makes it a perfect space to visit or host events.

What hurdles did you personally face in getting ready to open your business and how did you overcome them?
The biggest hurdle has been developing 25 acres from scratch during a pandemic. Our development plans have been delayed but It’s difficult to secure concrete investors and/or donors in the middle of a pandemic.

When did you realize entrepreneurship was right for you?
It’s something that I have always been interested in but COVID19 gave me an opportunity to really dive in. I had time to plan and actually think about how I could do it and actually support my family.

Why did you choose entrepreneurship?
Entrepreneurship grants me peace of mind. I have control and flexibility.

What would you say is your most driving motivation to keep doing what you do?
Our desire to create generational wealth, instill the value of family, develop pride in our community and continue to take back what belong to us land and culture.

What are you most excited or passionate about? (In both business and life or both)
I am very passionate about our youth and the programs/services that support them. Our youth is truly our greatest resource and it our responsibility to nurture and cultivate them.

What are the goals you most want to accomplish in your business? What are the goals that you hold personally?
One of the main goals is to be recognized as a culturally safe space for people of color. Personally, I am focused on connecting with youth programs that will fully benefit from the therapeutic atmosphere at Coble’s Landing.

Did you have any key mentors or people who deeply influenced who you are, what you believe in and what you’re committed to in your work and life? Tell me about them.
There are several women that have inspired and influenced me from my mother, aunts, grandmother and godmother to Ida B Wells, Oprah (who I met when I was 8), Celia Cruz and countless others. I’ve learned that every women’s journey is filled with curves, speed bumps, stop signs, roundabouts and even dead ends. Triumphant women drive on, through it all, sometimes we reach destinations that we didn’t know were on our map.

Did you have any life-changing experiences that put you on the path that led you to be doing what you’re doing today? Tell me about them.
I have always been fascinated by the healing powers of nature and herbs. Although I grew up in the city both of my grandmothers had full gardens. They always taught that nature provides all, food, medicine, and even joy.

What’s next for you in your business? What can readers look forward to from you? We are looking to continue our development and open the space up to the youth to provide that outlet. Get our community back to nature.

2021 Business to Watch – Crespo Law Office, P.C.

Marissa Crespo is an entertainment attorney who specializes in drafting and negotiating contracts in the film, television, literary, fashion, and new media industries. She represents entrepreneurs, creatives in various facets of the entertainment industries, as well as brands through trademark and copyright protection and licensing activities to monetize their intellectual property assets and leverage their brands through strategic collaborations. Through her vast experience, Marissa has represented deals involving high profile editorial magazines and branded content such as Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, television and podcast production deals involving Universal, VH1, Bravo, Tenderfoot, and HBO Max to name a few. A cultural advocate in her own right, she not only represents minority owned businesses and protecting intellectual property assets of minorities, but speaks and writes on cutting edge legal issues within the entertainment industries.

Why is your business a business to watch in 2021?
As an advocate committed to representing more diverse voices and narratives in Hollywood, Crespo Law Office, P.C. is the business to watch as it has played and continues to play an instrumental role in development and production deals for up and coming talent and high profile talent in the film, television and new media industries.

What inspired the to start your business?
I was driven by my passion for advocating for the underrepresented and my love for entertainment to create a more socially conscious firm centered around a culture of promoting diverse voices and representing more progressive artists who challenged societal norms in the art spaces.

How did 2020 change your business? Was it for the better?
2020 was a blessing in disguise as it gave my firm even more purpose and hope for entrepreneurs who invested in themselves and their business ideas during an economically unstable climate.

What lessons did you learn in your business in 2020?
I definitely learned the value of my firm and how defining what I do and my underlying purpose shaped the types of clients I obtained that were aligned with my firm’s purpose. I also learned how to practice better discernment over the types of projects I wanted to represent and the underlying why that surpassed a mere dollar valuation to my business.

What kind of impact do you want your business to leave on your client or customer?
I want every client who chooses my firm to represent them to feel like their voice is heard and that they have counsel that not just represents them, but really looks out for their career trajectory and overall goals to help them along in their journey.

Do you feel your product or service meets the needs of the market
Absolutely.

What hurdles did you personally face in getting ready to open your business and how did you overcome them?
Having people understand what I do and trust that I know the entertainment business and know how to navigate from a business and legal perspective. Especially compared to those firms that have been in business for 15-20 years plus, the competition can be quite fierce in getting clients to trust a more junior firm in representing their needs. Not every large, established firm is always the best, however. Sometimes, you can get lost in the shuffle as just another client number to bill rather than you be your project being more valued by a firm that pays closer attention and detail to your needs. That’s the value of my firm.

When did you realize entrepreneurship was right for you?
Immediately within the first year as an associate at a large, top 100 firm. I realized how I was sometimes used as the token Afro-Latina associate when it served the firm’s interests and sometimes put me in personal ethical quandaries that didn’t align with who I am and what I wanted to represent in my career. From that point forward, I knew that I would need to embark on the entrepreneurial path to pursue a legal career that was defined the way I wanted to define it and now how it defined me superficially.

Why did you choose entrepreneurship?
To be my own boss and take control of my career on my own terms.

What would you say is your most driving motivation to keep doing what you do?
Seeing some of the projects I’ve worked on or brands I represent in the marketplace, knowing I played an instrumental role in helping them get out to the public. Also seeing others passions ignited and serving their goals.

What are you most excited or passionate about? (In both business and life or both)
Just being present and showing up for others, no matter how big or small.
What are the goals you most want to accomplish in your business? What are the goals that you hold personally?
To be the Clarence Avant (The Black Godfather) equivalent in any business deal and within the industry. In other words, being that quiet, key player that gets the job done and maintains respects by all parties involved.

Did you have any key mentors or people who deeply influenced who you are, what you believe in and what you’re committed to in your work and life? Tell me about them.
My family and husband who always keep me grounded, my professors who believed in me and knew early on what I was capable of, and my friends who are part of my soul tribe and are my backbone for keeping me upright and uplifted!

Did you have any life-changing experiences that put you on the path that led you to be doing what you’re doing today? Tell me about them.
Absolutely! In a nutshell, hitting a hard financial downturn after I left my comfortable six figure associate position at a big firm to pivot into my passion all around the same time of losing my younger brother who was passionate about music. I realized during that dark period that my mental health and spiritual well being was far more important than chasing the dollar. Life is too short and I knew that I needed to write my own narrative and let God do the editing and publishing of what was meant to be for me and my sanity-personally and professionally. Going through that personal storm and soul searching led me to where I am now in fulfilling my purpose even within my own career and firm.

What’s next for you in your business/brand? What can readers look forward to from you?

Currently working on producing a docuseries and potentially teaching a couple of film/tv courses to spread more knowledge of the business and legal sides of the industries.

Men’s Health Month – Celebrity Executive Chef Carlos Brown shares healthy eating options

For Men’s Health Month I had the opportunity to ask Executive Chef Carlos Brown to share his tips for clean eating and why it is important to incorporate unprocessed foods into your diet. He even provides a clean eating plan that he uses with his celebrity clients.

What are 3 health & weight loss benefits of clean eating?

1. Adds vitamins, minerals and healthy fats to your body

2. Increases energy

3. Builds a stronger immune system

What is the importance of consuming “whole” unprocessed foods (i.e. fruits and salads) and lean proteins?

It’s very important because it helps to prevent sickness and health issues such as diabetes, cancer, and heart problems. These issues are very prevalent in the African-American community, especially in the south. It also avoids bodily harm for pregnant women and their unborns. As a pregnant woman, the food you consume is the food the child consumes also. So it’s important to eat whole, unprocessed foods for the health of the unborn child.

Below is an eating plan that Celebrity Chef Carlos uses for his celebrity clients that include a breakfast item, lunch, dinner and snacks. All meals need to be eaten before 7 p.m., but snacks can be eaten after 7 p.m.

Breakfast-

  • Egg white with spinach and tomatoes
  • Include fresh herbs, olive oil
  • Do not use butter, salt or sugar

Lunch

  • Salad with fresh spinach, 8 oz. protein (grilled salmon, grilled shrimp or grilled chicken), blue cheese crumbles for calcium, strawberries for vitamins and a strawberry vinaigrette dressing

Dinner

  • Brown rice or sweet potato
  • Asparagus sauteed in olive oil with pinch salt
  • Seabass or grouper

Snacks

  • Popcorn
  • Graham crackers
  • Charcuterie, add fruit

Chef Carlos Brown is a celebrity executive chef, restaurateur of Shrimp & Grits Cafe and founder of C3 Culinary Group. Known for being featured in the Smithsonian African-American Museum for his authentic dish Shrimp and Grits, Chef Carlos has been honored with Chef Carlos Brown Day annually on Aug. 23 in Charleston, S.C., the 2020 National Black Chef Awards Culinary Excellence Award, American Culinary Federation (ACF) Award, Kingston Chef Scholastic Award, and the Diamond Culinary Medal. Men’s Health Month – Being Healthy is a lifestyle

For Men’s Health Month I reached out to Miles Stroter for tips and insight on how we can change the narrative around men’s health. He first wanted us to know that being healthy isn’t an action, it’s a lifestyle.

The actor, writer and speaker shared with us 4 amazing tips that can be used to move into a healthier lifestyle.

Maintaining good health is a balance between eating right, working out, and practicing healthy mental habits such as meditation, yoga, and therapy.

When we eat unhealthy foods, we harm ourselves. A great way to improve your eating habits is to start by eliminating just one bad habit at a time. This could be sugar, bread, soda, candy, gluten, or anything else that you want to cut out. Be diligent in sticking to that one thing, then make your way on to something else. This will be much easier than trying to eliminate unhealthy foods all at once.

Physical activity not only releases endorphins in our heads, but it also improves our health, eliminates toxins, and boosts our self-esteem. Even if your new or out of practice with working out, start with just 5 minutes a day and work your way up from there.

Lastly, it’s important to remember that our mental health is just as important as our physical health. Create a daily regimen that allows you to focus on one or two mental health activities a day. This could be journaling, meditating, yoga, going for a walk, or talking to a therapist. In order to be truly healthy, we have to make our mental health an equal priority.

Chalked full of wisdom, passion, and talent, Miles Stroter is taking the entertainment industry by storm. With his infectious personality and tremendous talent, Miles’ journey has led him from being a recruited football star to a sought-after entertainer. Working alongside Robin Givens, Anika Noni Rose, Morris Chestnut, and Issa Rae, Miles’ captivating personality transforms on set and illuminates on screen. Though preferential to comedy roles, Miles’s diverse acting skills make him a fan favorite whenever he’s on-screen. With over a decade of acting experience, Miles has appeared in The Game (2012), Chicago Fire (2013), The Quad (2017-2018), and Insure (2018), to name a few! Miles’ talents soar even beyond the barriers of acting. When not on the screen, Miles is
spreading mental and physical health awareness in engaging and captivating ways. Miles knows
that happiness is a journey, not simply a destination. This perspective inspired him to teach,
develop, inspire, and mentor young boys in underprivileged neighborhoods. Whether he’s
entertaining others or speaking to large crowds, Miles’s own journey to excellence has been
fueled with an unrelenting passion for empowering others.

Using Laughter to Cope – Introducing Comedienne Blaire Postman

Laughter has always been a coping mechanism. Comedienne Blaire Postman is using humor to share her journey with long-undiagnosed A.D.D., and the lessons learned in her own unique way with her one-woman show Blaire Postman: Struggling Chartist.

It was a pleasure to speak to her via Q&A about her inspiration and drive.

What was the catalyst that inspired Blaire Postman: Struggling Chartist?

The inspiration for Struggling Chartist came in phases.

Before quarantine, I’d been doing 5-10 stand-up sets of one kind or another each week, traveling to New York for shows as much as once or twice a month, and traveling the country to headline indy comedy clubs, or to feature for nationally renown headliners at really large clubs. But I felt like it was time to build something just for me. I just didn’t know what.

Like it or not, once quarantine hit, I suddenly had the space to start exploring questions I’d already been asking myself, such as “what are my comedy goals besides getting booked at this or that club for a weekend” and “what would be the most most fun and a gratifying way for me to grow in comedy?”

Then in the summer of 2020, someone said “your History of Super Bowl Halftime Shows flip-chart bit is a big hit, and you seem to naturally gravitate to that style. Maybe do more of those flip charts now that you have the time, and put them online.” So I started a series of videos called Flip Out Friday that I posted on Instagram (you can still see them on IG or YouTube at @PostmanComedy). They were all comedy bits using flip charts covering everything from the glories of my original home state of New Jersey and the FEMA Waffle House Hurricane Intensity Scale (which is a real thing), to the movie Mean Girls and how I come up with a party music playlist.

It was more than enough content for a couple of headliner sets. And, at first, I just thought I’d eventually use them when I performed at clubs.

But I started to hear the question “why are you drawn to creating comedy using flip charts” more and more. Which I hadn’t thought about much more than to say “that’s how my brain works.”

However, it occurred to me that people didn’t understand much about the science and chemical causes of ADHD (which I have, and is not caused just by “watching too much TV”), or the ramifications for me of having ADD but being undiagnosed, and then undertreated, for the first 35 years or so of life. Among other misunderstandings, ADHD isn’t about not being able to focus on anything, but rather about not being able to regulate focus, or that interest-triggered “hyper-focus” is a big part of ADD. But another component of eventually thriving with ADHD (for me) was finding ways to effectively communicate the many fruits of the amazing creativity, break-through thinking, problem-solving skills, and other talents often found in ADHD people, including myself, to the vast majority of people who are more linear or straight-line thinkers.

So threading the story of how I came to embrace, love, and succeed with my ADD “tornado” brain turned those funny and fun flip chart comedy bits into a little less of a typical stand-up headliner set, and the comedic one-person show, “Struggling Chartist.”

What keeps you excited in comedy?

Well this project certainly has! Generally, I love to let my mind land on subjects other people aren’t really telling jokes about, and then to tell them from a different perspective or in a different way than you might expect. I like to think that most of my jokes or bits aren’t things you can imagine any other comic telling, or at least not in the way I tell it.

What words of advice would you share with someone who is struggling with something that is meant to break them?

Great things are NOT born fully formed, they evolve. Doing the different thing, the difficult thing, and then pairing that with persistence, finding a way to have resilience, that’s where greatness comes from. The struggle is the thing that’ll either make you quit, or make you great. That said, you don’t have to struggle alone. Reaching out for help is an example of doing a difficult thing that yields greatness.

How did you find your funny bone?

I don’t remember ever not having it. I was listening to George Carlin and Richard Pryor records in grammar school (perhaps I shouldn’t have). If anything, I denied it was something I should seriously pursue for a very long time, and each time I denied it to myself, it would get me into trouble. That saying “If you don’t bring forth what is within you, what is within you will destroy you” was exactly me and comedy when I wasn’t actively performing.

Why should we come to the show?

Well, I hear there will be booze there. But seriously, if I might be so bold: I know that I’ve learned a lot of amazing, hilarious, and unexpected things through creating these comedy flip chart bits. And THEN I learned even more about life from developing the show’s narrative about “why” I create those bits. So, while I know you’ll laugh a lot and be entertained, you’ll also be really surprised by what you learn – not just cool trivia about weird pop culture things, but about the advantages that come with thinking about things differently. And who better to teach you that than a neurodivergent person who’s been officially diagnosed as someone who thinks differently?

Real Estate Diva Genora Smith provides 5 Tips to becoming a homeowner

Gone are the days of thinking that homeownership is out of your reach and unattainable. We reached out to Real Estate Diva Genora Smith and asked her to share 5 Tips for becoming a homeowner.

 Courtesy of Genora Smith

1.  Create a savings account specifically for purchasing your new home. This money will go towards your down payment and any unknown repairs in the future.

2. Work on your credit score. The higher your score the better your chances are of getting approved with a lower interest rate.

3. Go over your finances to see how much house you can actually afford. I always ask my clients what they’re comfortable paying per month.

4. Contact a lender to start the pre-approval process. If you’re not familiar with any lenders contact a Realtor. Your Realtor works with lenders on a regular basis and will be able to give you a few recommendations.

5. Start searching for homes based on the amount you were approved for and be ready to submit an offer. Homes are flying off the market. When you see one you like act fast before it’s too late.

About Genora Smith:
