For Women’s History Month I will be sharing the stories that define and provide examples of women empowerment, uplifting stories of personal triumph and businesses that are inspiring and are making a difference for women. Women’s History Month is a declared month each year that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society.
I want to introduce you to Meagan Sargent – Publicity Consultant.
Meagan Sargent has 10 years of successful public relations and journalism experience. During her flourishing career she has covered a variety of red carpets and has graced the stage with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. From film premiers and award shows to non-profits and charitable organizations, she lends her voice and implements her talents in order to bring awareness so brands can reach their long-term goals. Through her vast and diverse skill set she has been able to create powerful media and marketing campaigns on every level. Meagan is from Houston, Texas and is a graduate from Texas Tech University.
Here is HERstory:
I’m a publicist, entertainment journalist, and content creator thriving in Los Angeles. Often referred to as a visionary and social connector, I have over ten years’ experience with top-tier entertainment publications including: TMZ, US Weekly, Hollywood Life, InTouch Weekly, Life & Style Weekly, Closer Weekly, Swipe Life and more. I also created the lifestyle & entertainment blog, Identify LA, about 7 years ago. The publication covers everything from celebrity entertainment news and the latest beauty and wellness trends to hospitality and tourism. Diversity in media was (and still is) lagging, which was one of my main reasons for creating the publication. Black people are wonderful content creators and Identify LA is a platform I created, as a person of color, to ‘take space.’ That alone is the driving force for me to continue working to break down barriers for future generations. Through all of this, I’ve learned to always bet on yourself. YOU possess the key to your success! From being on the red-carpet speaking with high-profile celebrities to creating thoughtful and compelling campaigns, I’ve been able to graciously create a curated career that consistently challenges myself and pushes me to the next level. I’m a results driven individual and simply put, I get the job done – and then some and THAT’S exactly the type of energy and standards I hold onto.
What does women empowerment mean to you?
Women empowerment is just that – empowering women. Empowering women to use their voices. Including women where decisions are being made. Trusting and listening to women to lead. Promoting women’s self worth and their ability to make their own decisions and the right for influential change (economically, politically, with education, within society,) and beyond. Women empowerment goes beyond the surface. By empowering women we ALL benefit and will feel empowered.
What advice or words of inspiration would you like to share with someone?
Always be kind. The most important factor behind my success has been the ability to form genuine connections. I’ve found that forming genuine connections is crucial for any businesses regardless of the level. With every stage of your life, both personally and career-wise connections are not only what carries you from one venture to the next, it’s what sets you apart. It can also lead to new business opportunities. As a publicist and running the lifestyle-entertainment site, Identify LA, having genuine connections has, and always will be, the foundation of my personal brand as well as any brand I’m affiliated with. After all, it’s not ‘who you know,’ it’s truly ‘who knows YOU!’
What inspires you?
We are blessed to live in a day and age where we can truly make a difference for future generations. The drive to make a change, for the better, is what inspires me. Having a family that constantly provides support and guidance also inspires me.
What does self care mean to you?
To me, self-care means prioritizing your health and well-being. Whether it’s meditation, reading a book, a massage or being outside, self care looks and feels differently for everyone. We have to stop glamorizing ‘the hustle’ and ‘being busy.’ Success and self-care go hand-in-hand. True success is when you take care of yourself first and foremost.
Why did you choose entrepreneurship?
I’m an innovator and I have a TON of scalable ideas. I chose entrepreneurship not only for financial freedom, but I wanted to be in control of my destiny. I also chose to be an entrepreneur for the challenge. It’s enabled me to work on various campaigns across a variety of companies. Why place limitations on yourself and your trajectory when you can be an entrepreneur and take them all head-on?
What would you say is your most driving motivation to keep doing what you to do?
The most driving motivation for me is knowing that failure is not an option. I love a good challenge! I’m always learning new skills to ensure my business practices are not only relevant, but ahead of the industry.
