Healing While Becoming: The Core Queen’s Journey to Wholeness

Wellness is no longer just about how you look, it’s about how you live, how you heal, and how you show up for yourself every single day. Few understand that more deeply than Dee Dee Legette, known to many as “The Core Queen.” What began as a personal commitment to discipline and transformation has evolved into a powerful movement rooted in authenticity, accountability, and total-body wellness.
A retired U.S. Air Force veteran, Dee Dee brings a level of leadership forged under pressure and refined through experience. But her work goes far beyond fitness routines and meal plans. Through Core Queen Fitness, she is challenging the industry’s surface-level standards and replacing them with something far more impactful: a holistic approach that addresses the physical, emotional, and psychological layers of transformation.
At the intersection of strength and healing, Dee Dee has built a platform that meets people where they are, while pushing them toward who they’re capable of becoming. From her fitness app to her podcast and beyond, her message is clear: discipline over motivation, truth over trends, and healing as the foundation for lasting change.
In this conversation, Dee Dee opens up about the realities behind transformation, the trauma-informed approach shaping her work, and what it truly means to build a life, and legacy from the inside out.

You’re known as “The Core Queen,” but your journey began long before the brand. How did your time in the U.S. Air Force shape the woman and leader you are today?
The Air Force reinforced the leader in me. It gave me the responsibility that is required to be a leader. From taking care of Airmen at work to making sure they are taken care of off duty, the Air Force showed me what real leadership looks like. It cultivated an authentic leadership ability that I could only learn from fighting side-by-side with individuals who understood the stakes at hand. As a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force, I held the lives of someone’s son or daughter in my hands, so being a trusted leader was imperative.
Your platform goes beyond fitness into mental health and healing. When did you realize that transformation isn’t just physical, but deeply emotional and psychological as well?
Outside of coming to that realization during my own fitness journey, I received confirmation once I began one-on-one consultations with clients and potential clients. Once we moved past the superficial excuses for the weight gain or lack of food discipline, I quickly started seeing a pattern of how deeply connected emotional and psychological issues were to the physical transformation. One of the most common patterns that I began to encounter was how often sexual abuse or molestation was linked to obesity. I learned about this during my Psychology and Counseling Masters degree program at Troy University, but to actually see it firsthand was a shocking realization. The correlation between molestation and/or sexual abuse is that padding on the weight will help keep away anyone who can potentially harm the person again. Once I discovered this level of deep emotional and psychological trauma, I knew I had to make sure my program was a more holistic fitness approach that would reach far beyond the surface.
You often speak about “discipline over motivation.” In a world driven by instant results, what does true discipline look like in everyday life?
Motivation is motive-based. Motives are typically emotion-based. Once that passes, the drive to complete a task is gone. That is why conquering discipline is imperative. Discipline shows up whether there is a motive or not. Discipline kicks in when there is no motivation to go to the gym or to meal prep. Discipline, however, is specific to each individual. For example, my level of discipline may seem intimidating to someone else. Therefore, it is dangerous to compare, especially in the fitness world. I would say that true discipline is sticking to the goals you set and finding every excuse to reach them.
Through Core Queen Fitness, you’ve built a holistic wellness ecosystem. What gap did you see in the industry that pushed you to create something different?
I saw an influx of “fake”, fake fitness “influencers, fake bodies, fake wellness, just an entire virtual world of fake. It started to really resonate with me in 2020 during COVID. I was disturbed by the number of people who were having surgeries and becoming fitness gurus. I am not bashing anyone who decides to get surgery (hell, I had my boobs done LOL), however, it is extremely dangerous to promote yourself in a way that people believe they can attain the same look by simply following your fitness program. There were women coming to me after they attempted to lose weight and get in shape by following major fitness influencers who were not honest about their journey, and those women almost died trying to achieve something unrealistic without having surgery. So, the gap that I saw as authenticity, transparency, and real at-home accessible fitness for women 35 and over.
Your work is rooted in trauma-informed healing. How have your personal experiences influenced the way you lead, teach, and connect with your audience?
I believe that all of the trauma, hurt, and pain I’ve experienced in my life were necessary in order for me to be able to empathize with my audience. God allowed me to go through and get through some of the most traumatic situations so that I would have the tools to help others who are experiencing similar situations. Being able to recognize that I am just a vessel and that I was created for such a time as this plays a major role in how I connect and relate to my audience. I want my audience to feel the authenticity in the conversation and know that I really do care. I want us all to heal and to break those generational curses. It is time to replace trauma with triumph. We deserve it.
With platforms like the Core Queen Fitness App and The Core Queen Podcast, you’re reaching people globally. How do you ensure your message creates lasting change, not just temporary motivation?
My goal is to inspire people to live their best, most healthy lives. Motivation is always temporary, so that is something I cannot control. The Core Queen can ensure that each person that we touch will leave with the knowledge to start their journey, tools to keep going, and a family to reach back to whenever they need that extra push.
In the words of the great Nipsey Hussle, “The highest human act is to inspire”. I pray that The Core Queen’s impact on this world is physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally inspirational.
You’ve built a strong digital presence and community. How do you balance being a public figure while still protecting your own mental health and personal space?
Initially, this was one of the most difficult things to balance because the world of social media can be very cruel. I had to learn how to detach from that fictitious world and understand that it’s not a real place. Yes, some of the people are real, but when I close an app, nothing in that app changes my real life. Once I figured out how to use social media for the good things it was created for, my mental health and personal space have been protected. I make it a point not to allow social media into my personal life, and that keeps me sane on so many levels. I believe that if something is sacred, you protect it.
As a woman leading in fitness, business, and media, what challenges have you faced and how have you navigated spaces that weren’t always designed for you?
The main challenges I’ve faced are dealing with not being in the “inner circles” of certain spaces because I am looked at as an “outsider”. Unlike most women in this space, I spent the majority of my life serving this country, so I am getting a late start in this space. However, I use all of the training and intense obstacles I’ve endured to prepare myself for these challenges. I walk into each room boldly and authentically, ME. I make sure that I lead with pure and genuine energy, no matter what. There is no space that wasn’t designed for me because God sent me there for a reason, and He doesn’t make mistakes.
Your message is about transformation from the inside out. What does “healing while becoming” truly look like in your own life right now?
Healing is a never-ending journey. We aren’t fully healed until we are dead. Right now, I am becoming everything I never knew I could be while healing from the childhood trauma that has been holding me back. I am finally accepting that I deserve good things without feeling guilty about receiving them. Becoming my ancestors’ wildest dreams has only been possible because I was willing to take the leap, do the work, and start healing.
Accepting that I cannot control anyone but myself has been such a game-changer for an overthinker like me. Being an overthinker is a trauma response that I have leaned on far too often. That is something that I am now able to identify and pivot from when life becomes uncertain. Healing while becoming is the story of my life, and I am embracing every chapter of it.
When it’s all said and done, what legacy do you want Dee Dee Legette? The woman behind “The Core Queen” is to leave behind?
I want my legacy to be that I did it ALL, my way, with a purpose, with pure intentions, and with a servant’s heart. My descendants will know who I was, and there will be reminders all over this world of their lineage because of me. I changed the structure of our DNA and stopped the trauma in its tracks. I left empty, and I left it all on this side of the dirt. I broke the cycle!
