Empowering Creators: The Mission Behind ALIVE Podcast Network

Angel N. Livas, renowned founder and CEO of the ALIVE Podcast Network, is revolutionizing the podcasting industry through a proprietary app (available for iOS and Android ) that’s empowering underrepresented voices and helping them maintain ownership and monetize their content.

Yusuf Henriques, esteemed founder and CEO of IndyGeneUS AI, a genomics company specializing in enhancing research and development capabilities through increased diversity in genetic and clinical research. These two have captured the attention of the entrepreneurial world with their innovative ventures. Henriques’ commitment to advancing genomics research aligns perfectly with Livas’ mission to uplift underrepresented voices and communities. This latest chapter in their lives, their engagement, promises to be as groundbreaking and inspiring as their respective careers.

Being raised by successful entrepreneurs, how did their influence prepare you for entrepreneurship?
My parents, Tyrone and Veronica Todd were very intentional about including me and my siblings in our family businesses. We didn’t merely watch on the sidelines and reap benefits – we had our own set of responsibilities, which taught me the importance of hard work at a young age. Whether it was restocking vending machines, sweeping the nail salon at the end of the day, or painting a newly renovated home for its next tenant – I understood the balance between the glitz and the grind.

What inspired your interest into media, specifically podcasting?
My interest in media, specifically podcasting, was inspired by my deep-seated passion for storytelling and my desire to amplify underrepresented voices. I can’t believe it’s been almost 25 years since I started on this path! Nonetheless, it’s been through my journey that I recognized the power of audio storytelling.
Podcasting, with its accessibility and ability to reach a wide audience, really resonated with me as a great way to elevate voices that were often overlooked in traditional media spaces. Through the ALIVE Podcast Network, I’ve created a space for Black storytellers to share their narratives, inspire others, and foster a
sense of community and connection. My vision for the ALIVE Podcast Network stemmed from a commitment to championing inclusivity, representation, and authenticity in the media landscape.

Could you share more about the mission behind ALIVE Podcast Network and how it aims to amplify Black voices while empowering creators to protect their content?
The mission of the ALIVE Podcast Network is to promote established and emerging Black voices in the audio space by offering content strategy, monetization, and distribution opportunities. We are amplifying Black voices through our proprietary app that’s available on iOS and Android. We diligently provide our hosts full transparency around their revenue and ownership. Before any podcast integrates into our system, an annual agreement is formed and signed by both hosts and distributor (ALIVE). This is key for ensuring everyone is on the same page before significant resources are exhausted.

You’ve had an illustrious career working with celebrity hosts like Larry King and Jane Pauley. How have these experiences shaped your approach to media production and content creation?
I love this question because it speaks to the very reason why the ALIVE Podcast Network was created. Up until about four years ago, I’d never created a show for a Black host. Now this never really mattered to me until I saw the disparities between hosts I was accustomed to creating shows for, like Larry King, Jane Pauley, etc, and people who looked like me. From my experience, Black hosts did not receive the same pay, marketing opportunities, or ownership of their Intellectual property (IP). When I witnessed this – I knew I had to do something. So, I created ALIVE. We can help Black creatives at whatever stage they’re at. Whether they need pre- or – post-production to bring their idea to life or merely a hosting site to distribute their show and monetize.

What challenges have you encountered in bridging the gap between Black creatives and mainstream networks, and how does ALIVE Podcast Network address these challenges?
The number one challenge we face is name recognition – people are most familiar with the mainstream alternatives – so that’s typically where they frequent. We are working hard to make the ALIVE Podcast Network a household name. Some of the things we’re doing to help us are adding new shows that are extremely compelling, as well as utilizing media outlets to spread the message around the work that we’re doing!

As a mother of two boys, how has parenting influenced your perspective on leadership and entrepreneurship?
The most important title I currently hold is ‘Mom.’ As a mom of two boys, it is incredibly important for me not only to be a leader within my house – but for it to radiate throughout the work that I do– both in the community and at work. The boys are 9 & 11, and they started googling me a few years back. When your kids can proudly talk about the impact your work has on the world, it feels good. But more importantly, it is about the example being set for them. The first question you asked about my parents’ entrepreneurial impact on me… it’s a legacy, it’s infectious!
What my boys see in me – they will know it is possible for them. What I love is that our household is all-around business ownership, as my fiancé is a scientist who also owns a start-up. However, the kids’ father is an engineer and works a traditional 9-5, so they can see that success can be garnered in multiple ways.

What advice would you give to aspiring media executives or entrepreneurs looking to make an impact in the industry, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds?
Here are three things that I believe media executives and entrepreneurs should remember:
· Be Authentic: Embrace your unique perspective and background. Authenticity can set you apart from others and attract audiences who resonate with your story.
· Take Risks: Don’t be afraid to take calculated risks and think outside the box. Innovation often comes from trying new approaches and pushing boundaries.
· Advocate for Diversity and Inclusion: Use your platform to advocate for diversity and inclusion in the media industry. By promoting diverse voices and perspectives, you can help create a more equitable and representative industry.

What exciting projects or initiatives can we expect from you and ALIVE Podcast Network in the near future?
I’m very excited to share that ALIVE is hosting several live events over the summer to help connect our hosts to their fans…and even new prospective fans!

What is your definition of a Pretty Woman Who Hustles?
A pretty woman who hustles is someone not afraid to get down and dirty – but, can always shine
like a diamond!

Celebrating Faith, Service, and Success: Meet Amber Nichole

Amber Nichole is a Spring 2017 initiate of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., a member of Alpha Phi Omega Co-ed Service Fraternity, a Higher Education Professional, and a Social Media Influencer. In 2018, Amber Nichole became a social media entrepreneur by utilizing Amber Nichole’s Greek affiliation for social media advertising/promotion services. In recent years, Amber Nichole expanded the social media business to include content creation and Instagram (IG) Live segments. Amber Nichole, known as @AmberNicholeMedia on IG, host IG Lives on @PhiBetaNation, @D9Hustlers, @BlackHustlersExclusive as a way to promote culture, educate our community, and highlight various Greeks or Black leaders from all industries. Amber Nichole has a Pentecostal upbringing and chose to become a Zeta as the sorority has a faith-based foundation with an impact at a global level.  Becoming a Zeta meant that Amber Nichole has the opportunity to personally grow in alignment with Amber Nichole’s core value of service to others and Amber Nichole is honored to be able to use Amber Nichole’s talents to showcase Black Excellence along with the history that the Divine Nine organizations as well as Black leaders are making in our communities today.

Amber Nichole holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from THE Ohio State University and a Master of Science degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs from Purdue University Global.

Take us back to the very beginning of your journey which begins with joining your sorority, can you tell us about that experience and how it prepared you for leadership today?

The reasons I joined my sorority were to grow professionally, extend my professional network, and to serve the community. I enjoyed the members as well as the different initiatives that Zeta has to offer from local levels to international impact. Members of my sorority are trailblazers and created with the support of constitutionally bound brothers in Sigma.

As a graduate member, I enjoyed that I had a great foundation of who I was, what my personal values were, and was an emerging professional. Joining Zeta not only taught me how to set goals, but how to pivot as needed rather than giving up, when presented with different challenges in what was a newer level of adulthood for me as lessons. I still carry these lessons with me today. Being a Zeta has provided me with a network of resources from our Sigma brothers to our extended Divine Nine network, which I personally like to refer to other organizations as cousins, to support each other both personally and professionally as we support our communities.

As a leader, Zeta has prepared me to work collaboratively with others and to understand the common goals despite personal differences and approaches to getting the work done. I used this to transform a committee within a professional association within Higher Education and grew in leadership from a programming role to the leader of this professional association committee.

What inspired you to tap into the world of social media and become an influencer? What would you say is your niche?

My niche is that @PhiBetaNation provides a platform to highlight the various journeys of Zetas and Sigmas beyond our letters and get to the core of who we are as people.

Although I joined Zeta as a graduate member, I was only a couple of years removed from undergraduate studies and a paraprofessional. Being at a younger age in a graduate chapter, I felt I was sometimes in an awkward middle where I had more commonalities in life with the undergraduate members or recent graduate members who faced the challenges, as well as the excitement, of emerging into the next level of adulthood. Yet, I was inspired by the work of more mature Sorors who not only put in time to have an active role with the chapter, but were wives, mothers, and career-oriented women as well.

Social media provided me with an outlet to unify the Blue and White (referring to both Zeta and Sigma) experience as well as highlight the organizations beyond the popularity of stepping and strolling. My goal at first was to have the blog serve as a digital version of family portraits so that I could share various Blue and White stories with the world. As the blog grew, I learned I could convert this passion into a formal business. By hosting IG Live segments, I could combine my background in Higher Education and Communications to use social media as a way to educate,  empower, and inspire the extended Greek community, the Black community, and supporters through our journeys.

Your social media platform, @PhiBetaNation (revised from @AmberNicholeMedia), has evolved from advertising/promotion services to content creation and IG Live segments. Can you tell us about the motivation behind this expansion and the impact you aim to create with your content?

I received comments on the page implying that Greek members basically danced and would just like to party. I found myself often replying to such comments by highlighting the work, resources, and national initiatives that members of both organizations engage in. Although we often go viral for stepping and strolling, these comments inspired me to cultivate the narrative that Zetas and Sigmas are educators, leaders, and innovators. I love being able to showcase the current history of members in our organizations.

Regarding Blue and White, we tend to be underrepresented in other Greek platforms in comparison to other organizations. I am glad to have created a platform from a Blue and White member not only to connect other Blue and White members, but to showcase our stories more broadly.

You have made a commitment to promoting culture, education, and highlighting various Greeks and Black leaders. How do you see your platforms contributing to the community, and what messages do you aim to convey through your segments?

When I was at The Ohio State University, I was a Wellness Ambassador and these topics for IG Lives focus on the 10 Dimensions of Wellness which are: Career, Creative, Digital, Emotional, Environmental, Financial, Intellectual, Physical, Social, and Spiritual. Source: https://swc.osu.edu/wellness-education-and-resources/ten-dimensions-of-wellness

I used this as the foundation to select speakers for the IGs as well as current trends and issues in our community. I had everyone from Mental Health Counselors to Real Estate Agents. I will soon host guests from an Olympic Athlete to a Non-profit Founder.

I truly want my platform to be a place for folks to take something of value from what they watch or what they just learned about a member.

As an influencer and being known for promoting culture and education, how do you balance entertainment with providing valuable insights and information on your platforms?

I often repost chapter events, chapter anniversaries (referred to as Charter Days), and other major milestone events (e.g. graduation, job promotions, etc.) of the members. Members and supporters have the opportunity to participate in polls, nominate members or chapters, and submit topics for our lG Live Segments. Additionally, we have conducted giveaways, discount codes, etc.

I am also very intentional about sending voice messages to members who follow our pages and going to events to build relationships with the community and vendors.

What’s next for you, where do you hope to see your platform in the next 3-5 years?

  • Expansion of social media platforms. My first social media platform of choice was Instagram as the major trend in 2018. I have expanded to TikTok and would like to host Live sessions on TikTok as well and eventually YouTube. Additionally, expanding to provide more representation of Blue and White Members to outlets that includes all D9 and Black Leaders more generally speaking.
  • Develop fundraisers for nonprofits and host service/benefits events. I am in the process of planning a Brunch Benefit, College Fair, and campaigns to raise money for a non-profit.
  • Start a formal podcast & host a formal Talk Show on a major network or streaming platform.
  • Build a community.
  • Start a fund to donate to chapters or members.
  • Start internship and/or scholarship programs.

Currently social media influencing is a current side hustle and I would like to build a longer-term sustaining business that will require full-time efforts.

My goal is to offer courses, webinars, challenges that show others how to become both an influencer and grow themed pages. Additionally, I would like to create more opportunities that focus on service and giving back.

The Great Midwest Escape

Every woman can admit that there is nothing like a great facial that leaves your skin feeling fresh and smooth. The experience alone helps to relieve the aches and stress of life and takes you to a place of total relaxation. Midwest native Cameran Battley, owner of The Honee Beauty, lives her life serving others by providing a wellness experience like no other. She prides herself on following her passion and leaving the rest behind. With the beauty industry being a massive industry filled with talent from all around the world, Battley is leaving her mark by making her clients feel special and being attentive to their needs during her service.  In an exclusive interview, Battley tells her story of inspiration that has brought her joy and success.

Jazmyne Courtnii Byrd: So, tell me how you got started in business?

Cameran Battley: I used to work in the film and production industry. I attended Columbia College in Chicago for film and video. I specialized in working on commercials and I just got burned out from working in this part of the industry. So, I began to question myself about what I am I am passionate about and what my purpose is. I discovered that I would love to become a beautician. I decided to step out on faith and I research institutions and I chose Douglas J Aveda in Chicago to pursue my passion.

JCB: What drew you to the beauty industry?

CB: I have Always been a girly girl growing up. I always had my hair and nails done. The whole beauty industry just interested me. But when it came to skin care, I fell in love. I was always into the art of facials and skin care. So, when I transitioned from production and got back into the beauty and Wellness, I kind of reignited that love I had for it as a little girl. You know, being out, getting cute, just any reason to love myself and help others to take care of their skin and look their best. I found out how transformative and impactful it can be to the lives of our clients. You know, you can do a service on someone and really change their whole entire mood and their whole body.

JCB: How important for how important is it for you to make your client feel?

CB: I need my clients to feel like they’re the only person that matters in that moment when they’re receiving a service. It’s very important to me to make my clients feel like they are the only person in the service because I find that when people come to me, they want to escape from life’s issues and stress. I want them to relax and let go of whatever it is they’ve gone through. I’ve had clients who are entrepreneurs who are stressed with the day-to-day things that are going on, and they just want a relaxing experience. So, I find that people need these services, and I want them to feel like this service is an oasis. Taking care of I want them to get the whole experience because I want them to walk in my door one way and at least much better.

JCB: How important is the beauty industry to the black community?

CB: The beauty industry is very important to the black community. Our community is built upon entrepreneurs in this industry who have become millionaires and prolific figures. We changed the game and we create the trends that the world follows. Our history is rich in the area of beauty, creating solutions to help the culture look and feel out best. The beauty industry is very important for us because this is how we’re able to express ourselves and feel good about ourselves. As someone who is responsible for helping us feel our best, my priority is providing a great experience and service that will keep my clients coming back and new clients in rotation. I value being someone who people can come to just lay back and let me help them escape. I feel like wellness is so overlooked and that’s the one thing that people need the most.

The Ceremonious Journey: YAHZARAH’s Resilience Through Music and Life

YAHZARAH, a singer/songwriter/producer, epitomizes life’s ceremonious journey through her remarkable career. Raised with a profound connection to African customs, her innate talent and passion for music were prophesied from birth. Despite facing personal challenges, including a turbulent marriage and career setbacks, she persevered. After a hiatus, she found solace in music again, collaborating with noted producer Ray Angry. Her experiences culminated in the creation of her latest album, “The Ceremony,” showcasing her dynamic vocals and genre-defying sound. Alongside her musical endeavors, YAHZARAH delves into acting, recently securing a leading role in an upcoming film trilogy. Through it all, she embraces life’s ceremonies as opportunities for growth and resilience, embodying the ethos of perseverance and self-belief.

We had the opportunity of sitting down with Yahzarah to discuss her journey through the highs and lows of life, exploring the melodies of her music and the lyrics of her resilience. She reminds us that In a world where every voice matters, hers rings out loud and clear, a testament to the transformative power of art and the indomitable spirit of the human heart.

Can you tell us more about your journey of becoming a vocalist?

My journey of becoming a vocalist is a story shared by many black American girls and first-generation Ghanaians. Growing up, I felt a connection to both of my cultural backgrounds, and this duality has shaped my musical path. It all began in the church when I was just seven years old. Hearing gospel music for the first time, I felt a deep resonance with its stories and lessons. I knew then that I wanted to use music to tell these stories and touch people’s lives.

In addition to my love for music, I also became aware of the challenges I faced due to my skin color. Despite being surrounded by black people, the effects of colonialization were still evident in Washington, D.C., where I grew up. Colorism was prevalent, and I learned early on that my complexion was seen as a deficit rather than a positive attribute. Music became more than just a means of praising God; it became my outlet for receiving praise and validation from others. It was the one thing people recognized me for, and it even helped me escape bullying.

At the age of ten, I received my first public recognition outside of the church. I participated in a talent search at the Kennedy Center, accompanied by a pianist who taught me the essence of being a true musician. I am grateful for her guidance and the seeds she planted, which would eventually grow beyond the confines of religious entities.

Later on, I attended Duke’s performing arts program, where I chose to focus on music. This decision changed the trajectory of my life. I vividly remember the first day of school, standing on the front steps at 5 in the morning , as a child who had been bullied by children and adults at that point knowing I was finally some where with fellow weirdos filled me with excitement and a sense of belonging. It was the first place where I felt safe, understood, and part of a family that wanted me as much as I wanted them.

My love for music, dance, art, and international travel continued to grow. At the age of 16, I had the opportunity to perform at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, solidifying my passion for these creative endeavors.

In college, I attended North Carolina Central University, where serendipity brought my entire high school band together with full scholarships. This was a sign that I needed to change direction and move down south. The love and support I received at the university changed my life. It was there that I released my first record, collaborating with talented artists such as Phonte Coleman, 9th Wonder, and Darien Brockington. Our crew started a movement that has continued to expand in Durham, North Carolina, and even in my birth home of Washington, D.C.

During my sophomore year, my talent and potential became evident, and I received a call to audition for Erykah Badu. At just 18 years old, I learned 17 songs in three days and went on to tour and arrange music with her for seven years. Erykah became a mentor and inspiration to me, allowing me to infuse my own gifts into her classic album, “Mama’s Gun.” at the tender age of 19.

Since then, I have released five projects and been considered for a Grammy in six categories. I have experienced the joys of motherhood, the loss of a husband, and the journey of self-discovery. And singing for 4 icons Lenny Kravitz, Elvis Costello and Maddona.
And after 10 years, I am releasing my 5th project, “The Ceremony.” This album is a diary of my womanly reclamation, dovetailing my first project, “Hear Me” which began my own musical journey which explored love and the journey of a young woman navigating her own emotions and experiences. Great bookends.

Share your experiences of working with music giants like Erykah Badu and Lenny Kravitz?

Working for Erykah Badu was a dream come true. She was a confirmation of all that I was becoming. She made the choice to choose herself when I was still learning how to choose. She took me all over the world and allowed my voice to become a household name. Along with Camp Wisdom, they became my family, and she became a mentor to me in a ceremonious way.

Lenny Kravitz was so much more. I had a little more performance latitude on stage and the opportunity to sing duets with him. He allowed me to be a total artist, from the music to the fashion to the treatment. He gave me the ability to grow and ask questions. The safety and kindred of the family environment were present, with no sex and rock ‘n’ roll, but definitely a whole bunch of family and a great deal of great music. Since the day I fell in love with Tina Turner, Prince Rogers Nelson, and popstar Diana Ross, I’ve always known that I was a rocker.

One day at rehearsal, Lenny walked into the room and said to our superstar visionary stylist, Rodney Burns, “I want everybody to look more like YahZarah.” That statement blew my mind. My whole life, I was ridiculed for not being black enough. Lenny knew what that was like too. To have him knowingly bless everything I knew to be beautiful about myself, but always felt unsure about due to my environments, was a major game changer for me. After he kicked us out of the nest in 2017, I went into the world ready to claim myself. Because of him and that time, four years of Boot Camp with the rock ‘n’ roll guide himself, I am forever grateful. Hopefully, one day he’ll let me open for him.

Performing with Lenny at Afro Punk was an incredible experience. I stood there humbled to be behind him, but also knowing that one day it would be my time to be on that stage too.

And In 2023, I made that dream a reality by opening Afro Punk with my full band and music from my project, THE CEREMONY. Talk about a confirmation.

Overall, working with Lenny Kravitz and Erykah Badu was a transformative experience. They not only provided me with opportunities to showcase my talent but also supported and mentored me along the way. Their influence and belief in me have shaped my career and allowed me to embrace my true self. I am forever grateful for the time I spent with them and the impact they have had on my life.

Your decision to use your voice to convey a personal message about fighting for the right to be a mother and gaining full custody of your son is powerful. Can you share more about what led you to this point and the challenges you’ve faced?

My situation is complicated, and I cannot fully disclose all the details publicly. However, I want to emphasize that our current legal system does not adequately support regular citizens without legal representation. This lack of access to justice is not only unfair but also illegal.

Before my case, I had faith in the justice system’s ability to uncover the truth and find fair solutions. Unfortunately, my experience has shattered that belief. I can only imagine the challenges faced by young black men in courts across the country, where economic privilege often determines the outcome. In my ongoing situation, I had hoped for justice that would prioritize the best interests of my son and foster unity and fairness between co-parents. However, my ex-husband’s extensive connections, as the owner of a prominent black law firm on the East Coast, have transformed the case into a battle between the privileged and the underprivileged.

It is important to note that my ability to parent has never been questioned. Despite this, I have been denied my right to have my son returned to me, and my evidence of custody and motions have been ignored. I do not consider myself a victim, as I have entrusted this matter to a higher power. Taking my ex-husband to court has significantly improved my son’s life, as it has given him a voice in issues such as bullying, racial targeting, and conversations about his mental health. It became necessary to go to court to protect my child’s interests.

My main focus now is ensuring that my son can navigate this challenging phase in his parental life and thrive despite the circumstances. My music tells the story of our triumph over adversity, symbolizing the strength it took to bring him into this world against all odds. Despite the negativity we have faced, both his father and I are equally passionate about him. We need to find a better way to co-parent that is fair to both parties.

My son is my biggest fan and greatest champion. Every day, I perform with the knowledge that what I am building is for him. I am preparing a place for him, eagerly awaiting the day he is returned to me. It is crucial for me to remain aware that this situation is not about me or his father, but about what we both desire for our son. Regardless of my personal feelings towards his dad, our focus must be on his well-being.

Can you shed light on the kind of support you’ve received from fans and supporters around the world? How has their response affected you and your determination to fight for your rights?

The support I’ve received from my fans has been incredible. They have shown their generosity by raising over $10,000 to cover my legal fees and flights to see my son. Additionally, I have received GoFundMe donations and private contributions from celebrity friends who love my son and understand the depth of my love for him.

The most touching responses, however, have come from other women who have faced similar tragic circumstances in the Atlanta family courts. Their stories of spending exorbitant amounts of money and enduring years of legal battles to regain custody of their children have been both inspiring and heartbreaking. I had a conversation with one woman who shared that she spent $70,000 and fought for over 8 years before finally being reunited with her child.

Despite having visibility and the support of people who choose to bless me with their resources, I still haven’t been able to achieve a victory in the justice system. Nevertheless, I am immensely grateful for the candid and honest women who have shared their stories with me. Their openness has reminded me that I am not alone in this struggle. I am also grateful to those who have offered their resources and prayers. Their support has been a lifeline during moments when I forget that things could be much worse.

Even in the midst of these challenges, I remain grateful. Every day, as I walk into my son’s room, I imagine him being home with me full-time again. Our bond is unique, and I consider myself incredibly blessed that despite the circumstances, he is thriving and we remain extremely close.

Maintaining the balance between sharing your truth and avoiding causing harm can be challenging. How do you navigate this delicate balance, and what message do you want to convey to those who may be skeptical or critical of your situation?

Navigating the delicate balance between sharing my truth and avoiding causing harm is not easy. My son is old enough to read the news and browse the internet, so he is aware of more than I would prefer at times. However, I am thankful that he has a supportive group of friends who have also experienced the complexities of co-parenting. He can confide in them and express his feelings. He has expressed his wish that his father wouldn’t use him against me, and I have reassured him that his father’s actions stem from his love and passion for him. I believe that one day, when this is all over and the adults have found a more peaceful and fair way to share him, we will be able to sit together, maybe even laugh together. It is my hope to find shared peace with his father, but it must be based on fairness. Currently, the circumstances are far from fair. It is already difficult enough that I was deceived about the return of my child and had to make the most of the situation all these years. We need to change the way we relate to one another. Our son is old enough to see and understand, and neither of us should allow him to be soured against us simply because we cannot find a way to move past the past and create a future that includes both parents actively involved in shaping his life.

I pray for the day when there will be peace after this tumultuous period. My son shares this prayer as well. Thankfully, he is a resilient and wise young boy who knows how to utilize his emotional resources. We talk as often as we can, and I answer his questions to the best of my ability, considering his age.

Are there specific changes or reforms you hope to see in the legal system regarding custody battles and parental rights based on your own experiences?

I believe that family courts need a significant overhaul, with a shift towards fewer lawyers and more mediators and therapists. The current system is plagued by individuals who are solely motivated by financial gain, often leaving families in distress. Many lawyers charge exorbitant fees without providing any substantial assistance, as I have heard from numerous women and fathers who have shared their experiences. It is disheartening to see that those without unlimited financial resources are at a disadvantage, even though they have the legal right to represent themselves.

In addition, individuals who choose to represent themselves often find their motions ignored and are treated with contempt when they speak up. This lack of respect for pro se litigants further exacerbates the already imbalanced system.

In my personal case, my ex-husband, a highly respected lawyer within our community, has an unfair advantage due to the close-knit nature of the legal circle in Atlanta, Georgia. I have witnessed my lawyer and the judge casually discussing unrelated matters during one of my hearings, which highlights the unprofessionalism and bias that exists. This experience has reinforced my belief that lawyers should be removed from the equation, and instead, family counselors and attorneys for the children should be involved. The focus should be on facilitating effective communication and understanding between parents, considering the needs and desires of the child.

Unfortunately, I am skeptical that these changes will happen in a timely manner. The current system prioritizes financial interests over the well-being of families, as evidenced by the alarming number of abusive parents being awarded custody simply because they can afford the high costs associated with the legal process. It is disheartening to witness such corruption within the Atlanta, Georgia child custody court system.

As you continue to use your platform to speak out, what advice do you have for others who may be hesitant to share their own stories of injustice and struggle?

As I continue to use my platform to speak out, I encourage others who may be hesitant to share their own stories of injustice and struggle to find the courage to do so. I understand the embarrassment and shame attached to speaking out, especially when questioned about why it took so long to do so. I, too, felt ashamed and embarrassed that despite my visibility, I couldn’t afford proper defense. However, I discovered that there are resources, support, wisdom, and love available for those who speak up. Public defenders and advocates are free and accessible options for those who cannot afford legal representation. It is also important to educate oneself on how to file motions independently to reduce reliance on lawyers and their costly fees.

While it is crucial to acknowledge and address any embarrassment, it is equally important to examine one’s motives. If a peaceful resolution can save both the child and the parent from the anguish of a contentious court case, every effort should be made to achieve it. However, if a peaceful resolution is not possible, it is essential to persevere and do whatever it takes to protect the child, regardless of personal embarrassment or pride. As parents, we have a responsibility to ensure our children have the best lives possible in every way. Remember that you matter, you are worthy, and if you have done the necessary work, you are a great parent. Stay steadfast in your motives and reasons, and with time, justice will prevail.

Your memoir touches on your powerful and challenging journey of navigating through childhood trauma. What inspired this project?

Throughout my career, I have worked with the most vulnerable populations within my community. My experience has taught me that there are many individuals who have encountered similar trauma and obstacles as myself, so it became apparent to me that my story would be an inspiration to others who may have or may currently be dealing with similar challenges. As such, I understand that not everyone believes in their ability to overcome adversity, and some people really need the inspiration and encouragement from others who can relate to them and understand what they may be going through, and how they may be feeling. I understand that some people just need to know that overcoming adversity is possible, but in order to believe that, they want to know that there have been people who have been in similar situations, who were able to overcome obstacles that threatened to break them. People want to know what challenges were faced and what steps were taken to conquer those challenges, so I felt that it was my obligation to provide that information through the sharing of my personal story. My purpose and calling in life is to inspire and motivate others to strive to be their best selves despite the adversity they may be faced with.

What message do you hope readers takeaway from this memoir?

I want people to understand that no matter what obstacles and trauma you may have experienced, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and if you have a strong desire and passion to overcome adversity, no one can stop you from doing so. I often tell people that past trauma can be the motivation needed to push you accomplish your goals. The first step to overcoming is taking accountability for yourself. Then you must decide what you want for your future, and take the necessary steps to accomplish the goals needed to obtain the results that you want.

Can you share a specific turning point in your life that propelled you towards breaking generational curses and strongholds for the betterment of your family?

I cannot identify a specific turning point in my life that propelled me towards breaking generational curses. However, I can say that I have always had a strong desire to succeed in life. Growing up, I saw a lot of examples of what I did not want for my future and I learned my lessons from what I observed around me. I was often turned off by the actions of those around me, and I just always knew that I was different. I knew that the family cycle of dysfunction was not a cycle that I wanted to continue. I knew I wanted better for myself and my future family, so I made a decision to begin focusing on my goals at an early age in my life.

“Shaken, Yet Here I Stand” is a compelling title. How did you come up with it, and what does it symbolize for you in terms of your experiences and healing journey?

I wanted a captivating title that would catch the attention of readers. Initially, I considered the title “Shattered, But Not Broken;” however, I decided not to use that title because there were other books with that same title, and I did not want to confuse potential readers. Also, I wanted a title that was original, but still held the same amount of power and fascination. After a long bout of brainstorming, I prayed about it and came up with “Shaken, Yet Here I Stand,” which simply means, I have been through years of trauma and adversity; situations that could have broken me had I allowed them to, but despite the many challenges, resilience has allowed me to stand strong and serve my purpose in life, which is to inspire others do the same. Simply put, obstacles have threatened to break me, but because of my strength and God’s mercy, I am still standing.

How did the process of writing the memoir impact your own healing, and what challenges did you face in revisiting those difficult moments?

The process of completing the book evoked many different emotions during the course of writing. There were times when I felt fine, and other times when I felt like old wounds were being opened. During those moment I would step away to process my feelings and proceed when I felt better, which sometimes took about a week for me to pick up where I’d left off. There were other times when I’d recall specific moments and my style of writing bought about laughter. Then there were times when recalling and writing about certain situations made me angry. Ultimately, I set a goal to have the book completed within a year, and because I’m so goal oriented, I was determined to complete the book by the deadline, so despite my feelings about the content, I had a mission to accomplish. With that end goal in mind, I did what I’ve always done and worked diligently through the process.

Have you received feedback from readers that resonates with the message you intended to convey through your story?

I have received nothing but positive feedback about the book. Currently, the book is five-stars on Amazon, and I continue to receive input from people who are really inspired by my story. The following are just some of the comments I received:

“The author provided a real and very raw accounting of the strength and resilience it took to overcome many barriers and struggles she faced both growing up and into adulthood. I found myself both rooting for her and sending empathy throughout. Dr. Morgan is a true inspiration!!!”

“I love the raw and uncut layers to this book. It definitely is a “rags to riches” story still developing. Adversity is all around us but to live in an environment where you have to grow up so quick just to survive and still accomplish goals is somewhat of a miracle!”

“Not only is this book a great read. It is also insightful and inspiring for many people who feel like their lives were complicated by circumstances in which they had no control of. This book will have you ready to cry over some of the things the Author has been through as well as laughing at some of the situations as well.”

“Dr. Morgan takes you through the depths of her lived experience in such a way that you feel like you are part of her story.”

    “It’s like a movie.”

There were also readers who stated that they loved the rawness of the writing style, and appreciated that it was written from a hood perspective, so they were able to better relate. All of the above feedback resonates with me, in addition to all of the other comments I’ve received about the book.

How do you envision continuing to use your story and expertise to inspire and uplift others in the future?

As an empowerment speaker, I am focused on sharing my personal story to inspire, empower, and motivate the youths and young adults throughout the country, to continue moving forward in pursuit of accomplishing their personal and professional goals. Currently, I speak to students and young adults, ranging from middle school through college. My catchphrase is, “You Can’t Be Stopped!”

Inspiring Change: Angelica’s Mission to Unite Women Everywhere

Meet Angelica Robinson ,MBA a Detroit native. She is passionate about her spirituality and uniting women of color. Angelica is a best selling author, speaker, coach and entrepreneur. So without further delay let’s get into it.

Where are you from? What are your hobbies?
I was born and raised in the City of Detroit and attended Detroit Public Schools. I was predominantly raised by my grandmother, who eventually passed away when I was in my early teens. It was then that I came under the full care of my mother.

Although I did not have much of a childhood, I enjoyed family time. To this day, I still enjoy family as one of many hobbies. Just to name a few others, I enjoy traveling, watersports, planning events, golfing, and believe it or not, learning about cultures.

Before you started you’re journey into entrepreneurship, you went into law enforcement. What led you down that path?

Before venturing off into entrepreneurship, as a young adolescent I admired the police officers that I would see at the different schools and their positions, which led me to become a school safety patrol officer. I always had a love for assisting or helping others in some sort of way.

Although, I was picked on and bullied growing up, I never let that stop me from being a good person to others. I unfortunately grew up in a very dysfunctional family where compassion and love was not shown, it was more mental abuse if anything. I was also molested by family members, and when I told no one did anything.

Therefore, that is where a lot of my ambitious drive and passion to become a law enforcement officer came from.

You do a lot for the community through your job DPD. What has been the must fulfilling to you?
Being acknowledged by those individuals who were initially against you because of the authority you hold, and then eventually having a different perspective once a situation has been de-escalated and/or given time to think things through clearly.

As a female in law enforcement what advice would you give other women entering that field?
As a woman in law enforcement, I have experienced firsthand the unique challenges and rewarding opportunities this particular career path has to offer. Therefore, my advice to other women entering this field would be to embrace your strengths, build resilience, and always stay confident. Most importantly, remember your why.

As you approach the end of your law enforcement career you already have so many things in place. You are an best selling author with your book Uncuffed Voices. Tell us about that. How did you get involved in the project?
How I became a best-selling author was divinely orchestrated by my God. I was going through a very dark time in my personal life, where I felt like my entire world was falling completely apart, and once again, it started to affect my professional life. That is when one night, scrolling through IG, I came across Chief Chanel Dickerson’s Instagram, and that is where I began my Uncuffed Voices journey.

Can we expect any other penned projects from you in the future?

Yes. Through the Uncuffed Voice Movement, I have developed my platform, Angelica Speaks. I have seminars for women in business being set up, collaborations with a well-known fashion designer, and another anthology, but this time it’s my own.

I feel like we have so many things in common. For example multiple streams of income. Not only are you an author but, you have a security company and a new platform that you started calls Angelica Speaks. Tell us about that. What was the drive behind this project?

The drive behind the Angelica Speaks platform is to bring and unite more women together, especially women of color. Since childhood, I have been betrayed by those women I trusted to protect me but failed, and to this day, I’ve encountered the same. Yet, I still advocate for and have a love for all women.
