Dora M. Sergeant, is the CEO and Founder of DMS Financial. DMS Financial was founded in February of 2017 on the premise of helping small business owners while doing what she loves. DMS Financial works with businesses in the areas of accounting, payroll, budgeting, forecasting, new business set-up, and tax preparation. Dora has worked in the accounting industry for over 20 years with 10 years spent in the field of education. She is a QuickBooks ProAdvisor and holds several certifications. She also holds a B.S in Accounting and MBA with an accounting concentration. Dora is currently in the process of pursuing the Enrolled Agent certification. She has been involved in the strategic planning process of several companies, as well as the development and implementation of financial management policies. Dora has vast knowledge in a multitude of industries including post-secondary education, telecommunication, medical, government, and not-for-profit. At DMS Financial the overall goal is to help your “Dollars Make Sense.”

What inspired the start of “DMS Financial Consulting LLC”? 

I was inspired to start DMS Financial number one because I love accounting, it is the only industry I have been in for the last 30 years. What compelled me was I did not want to spend the rest of my life making someone else rich, at least not by being their employee. I want to teach and assist small business owners in making their own way.

What has been the biggest challenge of running a brand like “DMS Financial Consulting LLC”?  

The biggest challenge is letting clients know that we are out here and ready to work for them. 

How does “DMS Financial Consulting LLC” impact the community?  

The big picture for DMS Financials’ impact on the community will be to educate our community on financial responsibility, spending our dollars in our communities, nurturing small business owners, and taking ownership of our financial lives.

What financial tips do you have for new business owners?  

Create your business plan and stick to it. Build a solid foundation for your business.

Where do you hope to see your brand in the next 3-5 years?  

DMS Financial has proven it is viable, it has been in existence for 5 years and has been profitable every year. I hope to see DMS Financial transition into a staple in the small business community. I hope to see clients staking out DMS Financial because of the excellent and high level of service that it provides. 

What advice do you have for the next generation of entrepreneurs? 

Go for it, invent that product, but that hobby to work for you, and provide that service. Your options are limitless and the world is open and receptive to new and different.

What does being “Pretty and Black Owned” mean to you? 

To me “Pretty and Black Owned” means we as black woman business owners are here and we ARE NOT going anywhere. It’s ok to be beautiful, strong, and independent. We don’t have to dumb or dull ourselves down to exist anymore. We can be ourselves and hold our own.
