How did the idea of working together as a husband-and-wife team come about, what motivated the decision to run a business together?

Danielle’s father was in the process of retiring from the Diamond District and discussed opening a location in Atlanta to service the We Buy Gold, Jewelry stores, and Pawn Shops. In August of 2009, we eloped on vacation in New York, where we were attending another wedding. At the time, we were finishing our business degrees and had no clue what we wanted for a career. Dad took us under his wing and taught us the business. Over time, he passed the torch to us.

Can you share some insights into how you balance your roles within the company, with Andre heading day-to-day operations and Danielle managing financials?

We play to our strengths. Having an understanding of what each other excels at helps with this. There is always overlap, so we can pick up the slack when we see a need for help.

Your company underwent a significant transition from Atlanta Gold & Silver to Alex Lexington. What inspired the rebranding, and how has this change impacted your business?

Alex Lexington pays homage to our children. We used their middle names: Alex, short for our daughter Alexandria, and Lexington, after our son. This rebranding has allowed us to move to a luxury retail brand.

Relocating from midtown Atlanta to Chamblee, GA, must have had its challenges. Can you share a few immediate challenges you faced?

During this time, we not only moved locations but also transitioned from supporting the industry to providing a retail service. This meant changing all our day-to-day operating procedures. Clients no longer came to us because we were one of few in Atlanta who provided our service. We were now competing against a larger group and had to distinguish ourselves as an elite service that provided more than just a product. Alex Lexington is an experience.

What were some of the key considerations during this move, and how did it contribute to the growth of Alex Lexington?

All the steps taken during the move and rebrand were the foundation of who we are five years later. This was the beginning of both of us finding our niche in the industry and building on the foundation that Dad gave us during our nine years in Midtown..

With over 50 years of family history in the precious metal industry, how do you honor and carry your family’s legacy while introducing a new brand and identity?

We always strive to stay true to the values my family established in the Diamond District of NYC. Always remember clients are entrusting you with their savings, family heirlooms, etc., and need to be able to sleep at night, knowing they are taken care of. My father always says, “If you have nothing, you have your word. That needs to mean something.”

Any tips for couples considering venturing into business together?

Leave your feelings at the door. Something that has always worked for us is leaving whatever personal issues we have in our marriage out of business. Holding onto that can be detrimental to business life.

Andre, your background in Management and over a decade in the gold industry is impressive. How has this experience shaped your leadership style and contributed to the success of Alex Lexington?

In my experience, no single leadership style guarantees success, if you want to be truly honest. Situational leadership comes closest to encapsulating my approach. Winning in business, much like sports, is driven by the situation at hand. The plan must adapt to the unfolding scenario. There are times when I’m leading a project solo or dealing with specific client situations where swift and decisive action is necessary. In these instances, I trust my judgment and make calls independently, sometimes opting to ‘ask for forgiveness rather than permission.’ Being autocratic.

Danielle, having roots in New York’s jewelry scene, how do you bring a fresh perspective to the business, especially in evaluating precious metals and creating custom pieces?

During my first nine years in the industry, my father trained me to analyze jewelry for parts and as a whole. Quality and craftsmanship determine the value and the piece’s longevity. Jewelry is not a one-size-fits-all. Each client has their own individual perspective that we bring to each piece we curate. It can be simple or elaborate but speaks to the client’s personality.

With nearly 30 years of combined industry experience, where do you see Alex Lexington heading in the next generation of the industry?

When envisioning the future of our brand in the next generation of our industry, we aspire to position ourselves as a cornerstone in the industry for clientele seeking coins, bullion, and fine jewelry. Our vision is to continue curating an experience for clients that goes beyond basic transactions. It is an experience that results in the client’s achieving their goals realistically and honestly.

Are there any upcoming projects or expansions that your clients and followers can look forward to?

Absolutely, there are exciting developments on the horizon, with A’Lex Diamonds being at the forefront of our current expansion efforts. This venture is unfolding right before your eyes, showcasing our commitment to growth and innovation in the gold industry. A’Lex Diamonds isn’t just a project; it’s a significant expansion, embodying our dedication to exploring new frontiers and opportunities.

Are there any lessons you’ve learned as a couple in business that you would like to share with others navigating similar paths?

If you are just starting, the entire household income coming from one source is not for the faint of heart.

When your spouse wins, both of you win.

You can’t compete with your spouse/ business partner.

You should be their greatest cheerleader and champion.

No subject can be taboo.

You have to talk about any and everything.

It helps if you are actual friends beyond the love, the physical, and business.
