Everybody Loves Kylie

The KarJenner Sibling is the New Leader of the Family

From the beginning, Kim Kardashian was the leader of the KarJenner family. It was her fame that launched the Kardashian and Jenner family’s reality show “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” on the E! channel. All eyes were on Kim, with her sisters, brother, mom and step dad playing minor roles on the show. Last year the tables turned. Kim’s youngest sister (and youngest sibling of the KarJenner family) became the family’s first billionaire. Kylie bumped Kim off her throne and the family dynamic has changed quite a bit.

The television show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” made millionaires out of the six Kardashian and Jenner siblings. The blended family of Kris Kardashian, Bruce Jenner and their children (hers and theirs) shared their lives on the E! Network for 20 seasons (the show will end in 2021). Due to the popularity of their reality show the siblings started many businesses and had many opportunities to appear in other television shows, television commercials, films and modeling jobs.

The Kardashian name came to prominence during the OJ Simpson murder trial in the 1990s. Robert Kardashian was one of the attorneys on the Simpson “Dream Team” for this trial. After the trial the family’s profile was raised by Kim. Wealthy and famous clients hired her to organize their closets. Kim was a friend of socialite Paris Hilton. This friends were seen together at parties and red carpet events, putting the Kardashian name on the lips of more people. Kim raised the profile of the Kardashian name to scandalous heights when a sex tape she made with singer Ray J was released to the public for sale.

The Jenner name was made famous by Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner (now Caitlyn Jenner). He was a gold medalist, a television personality and motivational speaker.

Kris Jenner was interested in starting a reality show with her family. Ryan Seacrest, who had just started a production company, thought the idea of a KarJenner show would be a big hit. Ryan loved the wacky MTV reality show “The Osbournes.” He thought “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” would also attract a huge audience due to the blended family’s outrageous, unfiltered actions and words.

Th e family’s matriarch Kris Jenner became Kim’s “Momager” (a term she had trademarked) and booked many jobs for her admittedly favorite daughter. Her older sister Kourtney Kardashian and younger sister Khloe Kardashian ran the three sisters’ clothing store Dash. Right away we see the Kourtney and Khloe resent Kim. The Kardashian sisters confront Kris about her favoritism. Kris’ response is that Kim’s success will open the door for the other KarJenner kids. The push back saying Kim is a partner in the store and is never there to help. At the time of the premier of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” younger brother Rob Kardashian is studying business at USC and the Jenner girls (Kendall and Kylie) are tweens and in school every day.

Over the course of the show we see the KarJenner sisters open more stores and open businesses, in addition to modeling jobs and parts on other television shows and movies. Rob does not get his mom’s support and struggles to open her own businesses.

In 2018 attention shifted squarely on Kylie. She launched her Kylie Lip Kit and she completely disrupted the beauty industry. The lip kit, consisting of a lipstick and matching lip liner, sold out immediately. The products that the other sisters and her brother launched dwarfed in sales compared to Kylie’s cosmetic line. Kylie expanded her business beyond just lip kits. She now has a line of cosmetics and skin care products. Kylie became the first billionaire in the KarJenner family. She even beat out her brother in law Kanye West in the race for the richest member of the family. Kylie sold Kylie Cosmetics to Coty and was certified a billionaire by Fortune Magazine.

As a result of Kylie’s success in the beauty industry Kim copied her youngest sister and launched her own make up line. Her beauty business is called KKW Cosmetics. It also sold very well. While Kim continued to launch products her husband also became a billionaire. Kim is the third person in the blended family to hit this financial status.

The competition in the family didn’t stop with Kim and her sisters. In 2021 “Momager” Kris Jenner announced she too would be launching a beauty line. Kris has always been aggressive when it comes to making money for herself and her children. Their money is her money, being that she earns 10% of the women’s earnings for being their manager.

Who will be next to copy Kylie and launch a cosmetics brand? Perhaps it will be Kendall. She is an international supermodel and has a clothing line with Kylie. If you are Keeping Up with the Kardashians you will have to follow them on Hulu next next year and check their social media.

When you see Jennifer Lopez on screen or in magazines she has a sparkle and glow about her. You see the huge rock that she’s got on her ring finger (from fiancée Alex Rodrigez) and also how she carries herself. Jennifer is a confident woman who doesn’t always take herself too seriously. Her appearance on the NBC show “Will and Grace” showed us another side to Jennifer’s personality.

Jennifer’s skin has always been a topic of conversation. The actress, singer, dancer and fashion icon has skin that makes her look much younger than a 51 year old woman. Jennifer credits her clear, glowing skin to a daily skin care routine. She uses anti-aging skin products, gets plenty of sleep and she does not drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes.

Jennifer’s interest in skin care gave her the idea to start her own line. It’s called JLo Beauty. In the about section of product website Jennifer said “For years, the number one question I’ve been asked about my skin, and so I felt almost an obligation to share what I’ve learned.” The skin care line addresses skin issues for face and eyes using some of the properties of olive oil. Customers rated the products four stars or more.

JLo Beauty is the latest product developed under Jennifer’s lifestyle brand called JLo by Jennifer Lopez. The company was created in 2001. Under the umbrella of her brand Jennifer created products in several categories. They include a clothing line and perfume. Jennifer’s first fragrance Glow was launched in 2002 and was an instant best seller. Jennifer’s clothing line can be purchased exclusively at Kohls.

Jennifer was born in Bronx, NY, on July 24, 1969. She got her big break in the entertainment industry as a Fly Girl on the television show “In Living Color.” Her first lead role in a movie was “Selena” in 1997. Jennifer released her debut album “On the 6” in 1999. The album was well received and combines pop, Latin and R&B sounds. A Spanish version of “On the 6” was also released in 1999. Jennifer is currently shooting the film “Shotgun Wedding.”

Meet Pat McGrath

The Grand Dame of Beauty

British makeup artist Pat McGrath has been called the most innovative make up artist in the world. The honor was bestowed on Pat by Vogue Magazine. She won the CFDA Founder’s Award in 2017 and was named one of the top 100 Influential People of 2019 by Time Magazine. Pat’s contributions to makeup artistry have won her many awards. In 2014 she was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire.  In January 2021 Pat was given the title of Dame. She is the first makeup artist to receive this honor.

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is an honor given to British nationals and citizens of the British Common Wealth countries for contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organizations, and public service outside the civil service. Males are given the title of Knight and females are given the title of Dame.

Pat has no formal training as a make-up artist. Pat is self-taught and she is a risk taker with her make up creations. She travels with many bags full of make-up. Pat also travels with bags of crystals and feathers to name a few of the items she uses on models who walk the runway. She told Allure the reason she travels with so many bags because “If you’re bringing something new, something new is not gonna happen with a tiny, little makeup kit. We were building 3D moving parts on people’s faces.”

Pat works with many celebrities but is most famous for her runway show creations. Working with John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Marc Jacobs fashion shows to name a few, Pat has created fairies and aliens. The looks she creates are avant-garde, experimenting with colors and textures. Pat also created more down to earth no makeup looks. She told CR Fashion Book that creating no makeup looks are harder to do than the over-the-top creations she is famous for. The technique is called “three dimensional,” and is used to highlight a face’s natural silhouette. Pat says mixing textures on layers is the key to the no makeup look.

In 2015 Pat launched her own makeup line called Pat McGrath Labs. Each of her makeup products from lipstick to mascara are cruelty free and vegan. Her first product was Gold 001, a metallic dust. It was an instant best seller! Pat then decided she was going to launch a permanent collection. Pat McGrath Labs is featured in many articles that recommend her products including Allure Magazine and Popsugar.

Your Mental Health at Work

Communicate With Your Manager About Your Illness and Ask For Support

Many companies in the United States have overall wellness programs as a benefit to their employees. Employee Assisted Program is the most common benefit offered, where employees have a certain number of free counseling visits with a therapist to help with a wide variety of issues at home and at work. Other benefits include free exercise classes and meditation through paid memberships on phone apps. Although the idea of wellness is widely spoken about in the workplace, the topic of mental health is still discussed less than overall wellness.

Mental health issues involve more than just having a bad day. Depression and anxiety may affect the quality of your work and how productive you are at getting assignments and projects finished. It is important to ask for support when you are not feeling well. Speaking to your manager or Human Resources can be helpful. Together you can come up with a plan to help you in your work environment on days when you are struggling. Under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) you can ask for a “reasonable accommodation”. An example of reasonable accommodation is adding an extra break to your work schedule.

Also, under the Americans With Disabilities Act your employer cannot discriminate against you due to a mental health issue. If you do not feel supported by your management or feel you are a victim of discrimination you should speak to an attorney who specializes in ADA law.

In addition to speaking with management it will also benefit you to ask for support from your co-workers. Knowing you have someone to confide in over lunch or a coffee break will ease anxiety tremendously.

Asking for support is only part of the equation when you are working and have mental illness. The proper rest will set you up for success at work and in other facets of your life. We all need energy to function. Knowing what is depleting you and how to get the rest you need will energize you. In an interview with Shape magazine Dr. Saundra Dalton -Smith said “Rest is not the same as sleep. Rest encompasses restorative activities we do to refill our tanks, which become depleted through out the day.” Per Dr. Smith we need one or more of the following rest needs: creative, mental, physical, social, emotional, sensory and spiritual. You can find they type of rest you need by taking her quiz on her website restquiz.com.

When you have your results take action to build up your energy and restore your rest needs. Always take care of yourself first. When you are your best self internally you will be your best self in your career and your life!

Dressing Up in the Remote Workplace

Your Outward Appearance Affects Your Performance

Photo credt wsj.com

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the American workplace in a lot of ways. We now work remotely, and that means we see our team members only in Zoom meetings. Some have decided that their work wardrobe should be very relaxed. Business casual attire or a suit have been replaced by yoga pants and a t-shirt. Blowouts are not being done and make up in minimal or not worn at all. Its reasonable to want to be comfortable while you are working from home, but does your choice of outfit affect your work performance?

No one is suggesting its wrong to wear your sweatpants and a t-shirt to work in your kitchen. However, there is an argument for wearing something that is a little less cozy to keep your brain in work mode. Fashion designer Tom Ford told “The Sunday Times” he wears a three-piece suit for work consisting of a white t-shirt, a jeans button down shirt and jeans. Tom also wears boots on his feet, not slippers. Tom said he feels too vulnerable in knit wear.

Talia Lakritz from Insider.com wrote a story about her experiment dressing for work while working from home for one week. Talia said about day one of her experiment “As I walked to the kitchen to make my morning cup of tea, I felt a little more energized. Putting on actual shoes made me feel like I was ready to start walking to the subway.” Talia also said by Thursday she felt more productive wearing her actual clothes than wearing her leggings and slippers to work at home.

Sarah Harrison has been running her website hotcontent.com.au remotely for a few years and she understands the importance of getting dressed for work at home. She was interviewed for shedefined.com.au and said “It’s very easy to get caught in the work-from-bed vortex when you first wake up, reach for your phone and start firing off emails. Before you know it, it’s 11am, and you haven’t left your bed. Failing to get out of bed and adequately preparing yourself for the day ahead can leave you feeling just as disheveled as you look.”

The case for dressing for work at home can also be made when you are in virtual meetings with your co-workers and boss. It is unprofessional to look like you just got home from yoga class when you are in a virtual work meeting. Your boss will notice you take your job seriously if you dress the part (the part she can see on camera). If you want to go the extra mile and glam up for your meeting wear little lip gloss and mascara to make you look even more polished.

Working from home is still work. You should wear the outfit that makes you feel productive, whether that outfit consists of sweats and tshirt of jeans and a blouse. When you feel productive you set yourself up for success.

Level Up Your Skincare For Winter

Fight the Winter Beauty Blues

Winter will be here soon. The cold weather of winter, in addition to the ongoing stress caused by the world-wide pandemic, means our hair, skin and nails need special care. Dry air and stress make our hair, skin and nails more susceptible to damage. Whether you are working from home or at the office the temperature in the building and outside require a change in beauty needs. Check out these tips to help you look your best for Zoom meetings, in person work events and to just feel great!

Hair

Hair color lightens in the summer sun. An easy way to refresh your color is to use a glaze. A glaze will add shine and depth to your hair color. These products are great for every hair color. For winter a glaze will bring your summer color back to life! Hair glazes are available for home use as well as a salon service. They can be purchased in a salon, on the internet and local drug stores.

The trick to keep your hair healthy in the winter is to keep it moisturized. Dry air makes all hair types prone to breakage. Adding moisture to your hair will keep it healthy throughout the winter months. Use a humidifier in your home to keep the air moist. Also, using an oil leave in conditioner and a weekly deep conditioner will keep your hair in top shape. Get a trim every four to six weeks to prevent the formation of split ends. Limit the use of hot tools on your hair such as hair dryers and curling irons.

Skin

As with hair, the skin on your face and body needs to stay moisturized to survive the hard winter’s cold air. First use a gentle exfoliator to get rid of dead skin cells. This will prep the skin to better absorb your moisturizer. An exfoliator can be manual or a chemical product (a loofa for body and toner for face for example).

For the skin on your body you will want to use a moisture rich body wash or soap. True soaps are alkaline and will further dry out your skin. After your shower or bath use a heavier moisturizer than the one you used during the warm winter month. Use a cream moisturizer, not a lotion. Look for body creams that contain shea or coconut oils. Some body creams also contain mild exfoliants such as lactic acid or urea. Use your body moisturizer after your shower or bath on damp skin.

To keep your feet soft during the cold winter months the most important thing to do is keep them dry. Thick socks and boots may make your feet sweat. Keeping them dry will prevent a fungus or infection from growing on your toes and feet. When moisturizing you should use a thicker product than one you would use on your body. The skin on your feet is thicker than anywhere else on your body and needs the extra help from a thicker moisturizing product. Just like the skin on your body you will want to exfoliate the skin on your feet so that the skin will better absorb the cream.  Foot files, pumice stones and creams containing an exfoliant will all work.

The skin on your face should be treated different than the skin on the rest of your body. The skin on your face is thinner so you should use a gentle face wash and moisturizer. Using gentle products will keep your face from becoming irritated. Also, do not exfoliate with harsh scrubs and or highly concentrated chemical exfoliants. Stick with a lower concentration of the toner or peel you would like to use.

Nails

Nails are vulnerable in all seasons. Its important to pay attention to any changes that may occur on an ongoing basis. The key to nail health is taking care of your cuticles. Do not cut your cuticles. This will give an infection an entry way into your skin. Use a cuticle pusher to move the cuticle back towards the base of your nail and achieve the same look as cutting them.  Keep cuticles moisturized with cuticle oil at least twice a day. Use a hand cream that you can feel sink into your skin and cuticles after washing your hands. This will keep your cuticles from cracking, which in turn will keep your nails strong and healthy. You can use a topical product that strengthens nails and take biotin supplements, too.

Hydrate

The biggest thing to consider when taking care of your skin in any season is to hydrate. Make sure to hydrate inside your body as well as the outside. Drink plenty of water and eat water rich foods. This will keep inflammation in your body down, which will translate to better looking and feeling Hair, skin and nails.

The Delicate Balance of Working from Home While Your Children Are Remote Learning

Getting it all done without feeling overwhelmed

In spring 2020 parents in the United States were tasked with suddenly having to help their kids do remote learning. The spread of Covid-19 meant school closures for the rest of the school year. Six months later parents are again having to deal with the reality that remote learning is going to be the new normal for the foreseeable future for children in grades kindergarten through high school.

Getting everything done and meeting deadlines is tricky when the whole family is working at once. Here are some ideas to help you stay on top of everything.

Access Your Situation

Talk with your school administration about their plan for the upcoming school year. Will school days be a mix of virtual and in person learning, or strictly remote learning? Are students expected to sit for several hours in class or can they just get their school work done at their own pace?

Prioritize

What work projects and school subjects take priority? These items should be completed early in the day to get them out of the way.

Make a Schedule

Create a schedule for work time and school time. A schedule will help you give your full attention to your children and your work. Think about your work tasks and what part of the day do you do your best work. For example, if you do better early in the morning while everyone is asleep put these tasks on your schedule for early morning. From there schedule time to do schoolwork with your children, recess, lunch and afternoon tasks (school and work).

Get Organized

Use charts, lists and organizers to keep you on track with schoolwork and tests. You will save time everyday when you mark off which subjects and assignments are done, and view what material needs to be covered for scheduled tests.

Ask For Support

If you are overwhelmed trying to balance your job with helping your children with remote learning reach out to your fellow parents. Ask them for suggestions on getting organized and helping your child focus on their school work.

The Secret to a Successful career is a Good Reputation

It’s no secret that success comes from hustle. Our businesses won’t grow if we don’t hit the pavement every day looking for our next gig or client. Success, however, is more than just the fire in your belly pushing you forward. In order to truly grow your business you have to consider your reputation.

Reputation determines the social standing of a person in the society. It is a measure of a person’s influence. Someone with a good reputation is definitely preferred for better jobs and for taking up leadership roles. The client knows what they are looking for and what they are willing to do to accommodate you in order to work together. If you don’t fit the bill they will pass.

Comedian Heather McDonald is a great example of how being a delight helped her grow her career. I met Heather when she toured with her comedy show Juicy Scoop in 2019. I purchased the VIP pass for Heather’s Atlanta, GA, show. Heather was genuinely happy to take photos with fans and answer questions during the VIP meet and greet. Heather thanked me for my Barbie doll gift with a big hug and offered to sign my copies of her books (Heather is the author of two hilarious books You’ll Never Blue Ball in this Town Again and My Inappropriate Life.) She is very approachable and Heather said she loves when fans recognize her in public and say hello. In her work and with fans Heather is an open book about her life. This makes Heather endearing and relatable.

Heather has a very popular podcast and a new comedy special called Juicy Scoop . Two of Heather’s recent guests spoke to her about how being nice also benefited their careers. Heather agreed with her guests that being a delight helped her move forward in her career. Caitlyn Jenner said she talked to all of the Kardashian and Jenner kids about how important it is to be nice to everyone you work with and with fans. Caitlyn said she heard from many people how nice Kim was to them. It’s no wonder Kim and her sisters are asked to endorse products, work with photographers for photo spreads and collaborate with industry leaders for product launches.

Perez Hilton is another Juicy Scoop guest who’s life and career benefited from being nice. When Perez (whose real name is Mario Lavandeira) started a celebrity blog in 2004 he was very brash towards the people he featured on his blog perezhilton.com . He drew pictures over photos and the celebrity stories were not always flattering. Perez also had nick names for the subjects of his stories. Perez told Heather he changed his tune after spending millions of dollars to settle lawsuits. His career also took off. Perez has a podcast, has been on several television shows and just released his new book TMI:My Life In Scandal.

For those who choose not to be self aware the result can set back or ruin a career. Thus is the case with two reality television personalities on the Bravo show “Vanderpump Rules”. Stassi Schroeder and Kristin Doute were fired from the show in June 2020 because of their actions towards fellow cast member, Faith Stowers. Stassi and Kristin already had mean girl reputations on the show. In 2018 the women made a false police report implicating Faith (the only black cast member) in a crime they read about on the internet. Some believe Stassi and Kristin went after Faith as payback for hurting their friend Brittany Cartwright. Both women lost more than just their reality television jobs. Stassi lost her podcast and sponsors. Kristin had just released her first book. Her publisher canceled her virtual book tour.

Stassi and Kristin both took responsibility for their actions and apologized on Instagram. Stassi also decided she needed to be educated on racism and is studying with a teacher. She did an interview with Tamron Hall to explain her thought process when reporting Faith to the police. She said “I’ve spent the last three months working with a teacher and learning so much that I didn’t know. I didn’t understand that just because something wasn’t about race for me, doesn’t mean it’s not about race for the other person.” Kristin also said she did a lot of soul searching and learning about unconscious bias. Kristin spoke on the Hollywood Raw podcast about her feelings after being fired from Vanderpump Rules. She said “I think the biggest thing that I’ve learned is that I have so much to learn. And I know that’s super cliché and a lot of people say that, but it’s absolutely true because I think that I thought that I understood racism but now I’m really learning about unconscious bias.”

Stassi and Kristin didn’t totally disappear. Stassi has been posting on Instagram the progress of her pregnancy and her marriage to Beau Clark in September 2020. Kristin is still active on social media. She also did Cameo videos with the proceeds going to charity. Both women probably won’t be back in the public eye in a big way for a while.

Having a bad reputation in business will not repair itself overnight. It takes time and hard work to learn from mistakes. Actions speak much louder than works. Show your coworkers and prospective clients how you have changed and what you did to make the change. Your reputation will bounce back and your appointment book will start to fill up!

Wearing a Face Mask While Wearing Makeup

Wearing a face mask in public is our new normal. When the Covid pandemic began only a few types of non-medical protective face masks were available for purchase. Now, you can buy cloth and silk face masks with cool patterns to match your outfit. Regardless of which face mask you decide to wear, the air inside the mask can be hot and uncomfortable. The hot air can do a number on the makeup you are wearing under your new fashion accessory. Here are some ways to help you nurture your love of beauty while protecting yourself from contracting the Covid virus.

Start by switching from a heavy, matte foundation to a light weight formula or tinted moisturizer. You can also just use concealer cover up problem areas. The reason you want to switch foundation products is because heavier make up will melt and cause acne break outs. If you opt to putting color on your entire face start with a primer before adding your foundation or tinted moisturizer. A primer will grip to your face and also your full face color. The make-up will be comfortable under the mask and less transferable onto your mask.

Next play up your eyes. If you normally don’t wear a lot of eye make up to work you may want to consider upping the color and lash length for now. Your eyes will be fully visible while wearing your protective face mask. Compensate for the parts of your face that are hidden by using a bright color eye shadow, bold eye liner and lash lengthening mascara.

Your lips are hidden under your protective face mask. You may be thinking about skipping lip color all together. The thing is wearing lip color makes you feel pretty. When you take off your protective face mask you want your look to be balanced and show off your pretty pout. To avoid having your lip color transfer to your protective face mask switch from your current lip color formulation to a lip stain. The lip stain will dry down onto your lips, making it long lasting. Your lip color will survive being covered by your protective face mask but also drinking your morning coffee and you continue to look polished during your business lunch. When you remove your protective face mask add some moister to your lips to make the lip stain more comfortable. Choice a lip balm or moister packed lip gloss to top your lip color.

Lastly, use a setting spray or loose powder on your forehead, cheeks, chin and nose. This product will keep your face makeup from sliding off your face and onto your protective face mask.

Don’t give up on wearing make-up during the Covid pandemic! A couple of extra steps will help you look professional and put together at work, and make you feel confident because you feel pretty under your protective face mask.

Halestorm Singer Says Pandemic Put Her Career and income in Jeopardy

Halestorm Singer Says Pandemic Put Her Career and Income in Jeopardy Lzzy Hale (lead singer of the band Halestorm) is one of many women in the music industry struggling financially during the Corona Virus pandemic of 2020. At the beginning of the pandemic music tours were postponed or canceled. With no live shows scheduled, Lzzy’s income is in decline.

Musicians depend on touring to make the majority of their income and promote their music. Merchandising online and at live shows also earn the musician a good portion of their income. The reason musicians depend so much on performing live shows is music fans are not buying physical CDs as much as they used to. In the early 2000s music artists lost a lot of income to file sharing. Also, with the introduction of iTunes in 2001, music fans could now buy single songs instead of buying the whole CD.

A lot of the public don’t feel bad for celebrities who are not working during the Covid pandemic. There is an assumption that they are paid well, so not working for a while won’t hurt their bottom line. This is far from the truth for musicians.

In an interview with Forbes Magazine Lzzy said talked about how much musicians depend on touring to earn their income and promote their music. She told the magazine: “Well, I think that a lot of people look at musicians and look at people that have record labels or albums coming out and they think, ‘Oh, they’re set, they’ve made it, and they’re millionaires. I think that if you are somebody of note and you have saved up and you have a brand that you have built over the years, maybe you’re going to be able two hang on for a little while longer.”Referring to her band Halestorm, Lzzy also told Forbes Magazine: “We had played the biggest places that we’ve ever played overseas, and during the last record cycle we were really building something there, but do we have to start over again because of this?”

Lzzy and Halestorm are currently writing new material for the follow up CD to their 2018 release “Vicious”.
