The Pretty Boss Mom: Tywanna Smith

Motherhood is one of the most rewarding and stressful balancing acts. It requires pouring your heart out to a little human being while waking up every morning to make sure they have everything they need.

In this series, we highlight a few of those women who are in the middle of their greatest balancing act; pouring their hearts into their children while pouring their heart into creating a legacy for their families.

Tywanna is a former professional basketball player turned business manager for the pros. For the past 15 years, she has worked in a financial capacity with players from the NBA, NFL, WNBA, Europe, and China. Her work has been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur, and NBC Sports. She host a PROready workshop for high school athletes to prepare them for the next steps after high school and college. Also, she host a financial literacy program called the Teen Money Box. In addition, her book, “Surviving the Lights” became a best-seller in 2017.

What inspired your start in entrepreneurship?

I was inspired to become an entrepreneur to address the multi-faceted issues faced by professional athletes. I am sure you have seen the media! There was not a traditional career path for my interests in the sports industry. For example, there are agents, coaches, and trainers who guide athletes on the court and field. There are also advisors, attorneys, and accountants who specialize in their respective fields. However, there is not a degree program that teaches you how to manage the very fast-paced and multi-faceted lives of elite athletes. So, I decided to forge my own path with my company, The Athlete’s Nexus. As they say, if there is a problem without a solution – create one.

What has been your biggest challenge/failure as an entrepreneur? and how do you deal with it?

One of the biggest challenges that I have faced as an entrepreneur in the sports industry is being a Black mother. Early in my career, I dealt with being underestimated as a woman in sports. If you add the stigma of being a minority, you can imagine how often I was overlooked or passed up in a space dominated by White men. In addition, being a mother is sometimes seen as a disadvantage, because it is expected that parental duties will always take precedence over business. I believe that I have consistently defied those assumptions by keeping the focus on the quality of my work. My motto is to consistently over-deliver so that a potential client would be insane not to hire me!

How do you balance entrepreneurship and motherhood without experiencing burnout, while pursuing your passion?

I used to struggle with achieving balance, but I have learned to disconnect outside of business hours, schedule self-care time, and say NO! At one point, I felt guilty for not answering every call until I realized that it can wait. This pressure was self-inflicted. What I found was, that my clients and colleagues accepted and respected my boundaries without complaint, and these protective guidelines actually improved my productivity.

What advice do you have for moms looking to get started in entrepreneurship?

Do not let what you do become who you are. We can work hard and succeed without compromising our dignity, conceding our integrity, or sacrificing motherhood. Be human in this process and never succumb to the emotionless and ruthlessness of entrepreneurship.

What does being a Pretty Woman Who Hustles mean to you?

Being a Pretty Woman Who Hustles signifies a beautiful blend of skill, relentless determination, and grace. Beauty is exuded from the inside out, and that means that our hearts for serving others and using our gifts for good is what makes us so magical. Our hustle is inspirational!

What books do you recommend for moms navigating entrepreneurship?

One of my all-time favorite books has become “The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom.” This book can help anyone unlock their potential by removing the self-limiting philosophies that they often repeat themselves. As moms, we are often our own toughest critics, and we play many different roles in the lives of others. If we remove those blocks, the doubt, the destructive thoughts that hinder our growth and confidence, we can achieve every single thing that we desire with the gifts that God has placed inside of us. It is difficult to navigate and succeed in entrepreneurship if we do not first believe in ourselves.

The Pretty Boss Mom: Meet Hanieh Sigari

Motherhood is one of the most rewarding and stressful balancing acts. It requires pouring your heart out to a little human being while waking up every morning to make sure they have everything they need.

In this series, we highlight a few of those women who are in the middle of their greatest balancing act; pouring their hearts into their children while pouring their heart into creating a legacy for their families.

Hanieh Sigari is an entrepreneur, biochemist, anti-aging industry disruptor, and mom. Her holistic California-based skincare brand, Qyral, is the culmination of a lifelong mission to improve lives and increase longevity. She combines her business acumen, bioscience knowledge, and passion for empowering women to be beautiful and financially free.

What inspired your start in entrepreneurship?
I’ve been fortunate to have grown up around very strong, resilient women who taught me that nothing is impossible or out of reach. My grandmother was illiterate, had a second-grade education, and had ten children, but she was able to start multiple businesses and make a name for herself as a female construction developer in Tehran.

My mom was a social worker who founded a business to provide employment for hundreds of women who were devastated by war. Although she had no experience, she was able to land government contracts to bring in work. The women learned a skill that allowed them to find independence so they could start over.

How could I not be inspired by those role models? I learned by watching them that you can be a strong, powerful woman, mom, and wife, and have a thriving career, make your dreams a reality, and change the world one step at a time. It’s all possible and within reach.

To me, entrepreneurship, if done with the right motives and intentions, is a means to impact countless lives and have a positive effect on society.

My dream of being an entrepreneur started because of my work in nursing homes. When I was 15, I started working various jobs in care centers and found some deplorable conditions. I often daydreamed about starting my own nursing home and so I could do things my way! In my nursing home, patients would be at the center of care. We would have a central place where we would gather every evening and sing, play games, tell stories and have fun! The ratio of health workers to residents would be very small.

I tried to do some of these things at the nursing homes where I worked but my employers didn’t like my ideas. Then I met a young, ambitious engineer in nursing home development who eventually became my husband. I shared my dreams and ambitions and he was THRILLED to join me on the ride. But first, we had to finish our academic studies. We both moved to Michigan for graduate school- he studied business and I, biochemistry, and gerontology. We were two young people out of school with very little money, but the dream to have an impact never left us. In 2011, we decided to divide and conquer. I would start a geriatric business and he would go into the newly booming world of e-commerce and logistics.

I initially started my first business because I was faced with two options; continue my longevity research studies in a laboratory and academic setting, or find a way to apply it in a real-world setting through applied patient-centric care.

Since I didn’t have the financial means to start my dream nursing home, I thought I’d start with something more attainable. A home health company that didn’t require a lot of capital and overhead. Despite being young and not knowing anything about business, I was able to break $1.2 million in revenue in my first year. That doubled the next year, and so on. I was having fun and making the impact I always dreamt of!

As amazing as it was, I ended up selling that business because I felt it was time to pursue other opportunities. What I really wanted to do was empower other women. I used my knowledge as a biochemist and passion for finding solutions to problems people face while aging. I dove into research and developed custom skincare products that are formulated for individuals. From there, Qyral was born. We are on a mission to educate people about skincare and anti-aging discoveries- not just for beauty, but holistically. We are set up as a direct sales and social selling company so that anyone can own a business. It’s a win-win because it combines all of my passions. And ultimately, passion is what really inspired me to journey into entrepreneurship.

What has been your biggest challenge/failure as an entrepreneur? And how do you deal with it?

I have a complete aversion towards the term “failure”. I don’t think there is any such thing since it’s only a stepping stone to bigger and better things. You only fail if you give up. But when you have a big mission and full conviction in what you’re doing, you don’t quit!

Of course, there are tons of challenges when you’re an entrepreneur. In the past, I’ve lost sleep worrying that I wouldn’t have enough money in the bank to make payroll. I’ve been frustrated not seeing the type of growth I was hoping for. Balancing and prioritizing time with family and friends is always a challenge.

The most challenging thing has really been motherhood combined with a full focus on my business. Before having kids, my work ended when my eyes gave out and my fingers couldn’t type. I could work 16 or 18-hour days without a problem. After having kids, that’s no longer possible, and I am not willing to sacrifice my time with my children. They are the most important things in my life. As a result, I’ve had to learn to prioritize.

I’ve had to say “no” to many things I would normally say yes. I try to be as present as possible when I’m with my children and make sure the few hours we have together are the most rewarding, memorable hours of their day.

My health and fitness are also very important. I prioritize that by waking up at 4 a.m. to start my day with a workout.

How do you balance entrepreneurship and Motherhood without experiencing burnout while pursuing your passion?

It’s a challenge, but I’ve learned to ask for help. I know I can’t do it alone, so I recruit help from friends, family, or babysitters whenever I can. My business is as much of a child as my own children so I’ve learned to integrate it all and have fun!

I see motherhood as a privilege and blessing so having a good, positive attitude helps. The kids will only be little for four or five years, so I try not to forget that and enjoy every moment I can with them.

What advice do you have for moms looking to get started In entrepreneurship?
Don’t start a business because it’s the trendy, fun, cool thing to do. Really think about why you want to start a business. Identifying your “why” is the most important step and coming back to your why will be critical throughout your entrepreneurial journey. It’s really easy to be excited about something in the first few months, but imagine doing it every single day for years and possibly never making a dime. You’ll want to throw in the towel and give up, but your why will always pull you back and put you back on track.

Passion about what you’re doing is also very important. You may have all the right reasons why you’re doing something, but maybe you’re not passionate about it. So take some time to be sure you’re absolutely in LOVE with what you’re doing. How long are you willing to work at it? What skills do you need to acquire? Malcolm Gladwell calls it the 10K hour rule and it’s true.

What does being a Pretty Woman Who Hustles mean to you?
It means being a woman who is resilient, passionate, determined, impact-driven, and exudes confidence. She knows how to lean into the softness of her femininity, and hold her strength. She’s a woman who knows what she wants and isn’t willing to fall into societal norms and standards. She is me and you.

What books do you recommend for moms navigating entrepreneurship?

This is a tough question because there are so many good ones! Angela Duckworth’s Grit is always a really good read. Neville Goddard writes about mindset before skillset, so anything by him is good. Anything by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes is incredibly powerful and a symbol of strong femininity.

Wellness, Fitness and Fitcations with Gabrielle Mazar

With over 15 years in the fitness industry, Gabi’s journey is one of entrepreneurship, dedication, and triumph – from her early years interning back in 2007, to becoming an active trainer, and opening up a gym in 2012 – Health Body Works in Tempe, AZ – Gabi was able to build up a loyal client base tripling her business. With business booming, she purchased another gym, Pilates Tempe in 2019 and, started yet another company that combined her love for both fitness and travel in the same year. The new venture, Destination Fitcations.

Destination Fitcations is a worry-free, stress-free, all-inclusive luxurious vacation for travelers who love to stay active. Destination Fitcations allows the opportunity for clients to experience the comfort of an all-planned out, and an unforgettable pampered trip to exotic places where one can go and recharge, return home and not feel the need for another vacation after the vacation.

Every year, Destination Fitcations offers an experience like no other. A new exquisite location is carefully vetted to ensure a one-of-a-kind experience. From pristine beaches surrounded by lush greenery, high-end resorts, delightful meals, and breathtaking adventures such as hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, excursions, yoga, and massages…these are just a few of the amazing features planned for an epic exotic getaway.

Gabi’s vision is to make fitness fun again but also develop and maintain sustainable self-care practices for her clients. After being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, she realized how important it is to encourage each individual on their health journey, as they work towards living better lifestyles,

“We are all made differently. Every ‘body’ is different. We all have different body types, differently-abled in their own beautiful makeup, and we should see fitness and nutrition not as an unrealistic factor to attain but one to live out and enjoy.

Gabi is a rare breed of a trainer who truly cares about every one of her clients. Gabi’s passion is helping people live their best possible lives. Watching her clients flourish in life beyond their physical health is an especially personal and professional fulfilling satisfaction Gabi gets to enjoy regularly.

When did you realize you held a passion for fitness and wellness?

I have always loved fitness and have been around it my entire life, but it wasn’t until college that I realized I was truly passionate about it and considered it as a career. I was pre-business at ASU and was really lost. I took a semester off to take a mental break as well as use the time to do things I enjoyed. Exercise, nutrition, and wellness piqued my interest and I have never looked back since.

With over 15 years in the fitness industry, what has been the most rewarding and challenging part of your journey?

The most rewarding part of the last 15 years would have to be the impact on people that I never expected. Even as clients leave you, move, or move on, I have had so many people reach out to me and tell me that I made an impact on them. You know your clients in their most vulnerable times and the happiest of times but when they tell you that something you said or did really stuck with them, as trivial as I may have thought it was, it meant something to them. That is priceless.

As far as the most challenging part of my journey…it would have to be the up and downs of being an entrepreneur. There are many times you want to give up or doubt yourself and your abilities. It isn’t easy running your own business, especially in the beginning. There are no guarantees, no benefits, and no personal hours because you are working all the time. But at the end of the day, all your hard work is worth it. Each challenge teaches you a lesson and pushes you to grow personally and professionally.

As a successful entrepreneur, what message do you hope women walk away with?

Each industry has its challenges. Many are very male-dominated, mine included, and we can sometimes lose our voice. I hope that women can find a voice and speak up, keep pushing, and don’t let little failures stop them from achieving their dreams. We need to be each other’s cheerleaders and lift each other up.

What can women expect when joining Destination Fitcations, describe the experience?

When joining one of my fitcations, you not only have an all-inclusive luxury vacation that is planned out for you, but you have the opportunity to share it with like-minded people. Each destination is carefully selected to be safe, beautiful, and a vacation your dreams are made of. Our next fitcation to Nicaragua is at a beautiful luxury ecolodge with private pools, ocean views, gourmet food is grown right on the property, active excursions, and fitness classes that are catered to you while overlooking the beach.

What’s next for Gabrielle Mazar?

The world is my oyster! I hope to be able to bring the greatest experiences to people ready to take on the world. I also would love to expand my Pilates studio and be able to bring fitness and Pilates to as many people as I can.

Summer looks on the GO…

Stylish and free is the way to be!

Are you thinking of going Natural? Women all over the world are tapping into their inner beauty and doing the BIG CHOP !

The saying is “Once a woman cuts her hair, that’s how you’ll know she is ready to change her life”.

Are you ready for change? Ready to be free? Ready to let go of the past? Cutting off all dead ends is symbolic to all those things. This summer’s new look should be free and lightweight. Maybe an updo or ponytail will suit you.

A protective braiding style will also help maintain your hair growth. And will last for a month or two for those that just want to get up and go. Very low maintenance

Hair care is very essential to every woman and sometimes it can be a drag trying to figure out what styles to get. Whether you choose to do the big chop or rock some stylish braids you’ll be sure to keep cool.

 Entrepreneur vs Employee.

“Are you ready to start a lucrative business?”

Here are a few things you should consider before taking that leap of faith.

Pros and Cons as a Entrepreneur

Unlimited pay increaseNo health insurance
Work your own ScheduleNo paid time off
Payday is everydayNo social security benefits
Low taxesNo tax refund
You set your own priceNo guarantees

(Varies)

Being an entrepreneur places most of the responsibility on you. Which is why it can be a difficult transition if you have not set up other alternatives.

Please be mindful that you can purchase health insurance through the health marketplace, as well as life insurance for you and your family.

Setting your own price,  managing your money with a savings account and hiring an assistant will help you when you need a break from your own business.

You can set up a business account that is separate from your day to day checking account. Spending appropriately will help build credit.

It’s all about taking a risk and believing in yourself and the business you choose to create.

100 Authors in 100 Days: Meet J.B. Vample

J.B. Vample is an author who fell in love with the written word at a young age. While in her final year of high school, she came up with the concept of her new adult fiction series The College Life Series. After years of writing only for herself, J.B. published her debut novel College Life 101: Freshman Orientation in 2015. Since then, she has written and published the other eight installments of TCLS. Her latest standalone book Right as Reign, which is set to be released January 18, 2022, is her tenth novel. Currently residing in Philadelphia, J.B. continues to write while managing her career as an indie author.

You fell in love with writing at a very young age, can you remember the moment you were introduced to writing?

First, I’d like to mention that I’ve had an overactive imagination as far back as I can remember. But I didn’t write my first story until I was in middle school. I went from writing that short story to writing journal entries, to poetry, then graduated to writing full novels in high school. Writing had become a way for me to express myself. It was my outlet, my hobby and after a while, I realized that it was my passion.

Can you give us 3 words to describe your creativity?

 Imaginative, detailed, and enthusiastic.

What inspired the start of “The College Life Series”?

I was seventeen when the concept came to me. I was in my last year of high school, preparing to graduate and go to college in the fall. I was imagining what my own college experience could possibly be like. Imagining who I’d meet, how my classes were going to go, where I’d live, etc. Then out of nowhere, I came up with this cast of five young black women, then just began writing. I had half of the first book finished before I even stepped foot onto campus. At that time, I didn’t think about publishing. I never expected to. I just knew that I wanted to read this story, so I wrote it for myself.

You have your 10th novel which debuted early 2022, can you share the message behind it?

The title of my 10th novel, which released January 2022, is Right as Reign. This is a women’s contemporary / romance standalone that I wrote back in 2020. I absolutely love this story by the way. There are a few messages within this novel. One being that, when you finally let go of the thing / person / situation that’s hurting you, you can then allow yourself to heal, thrive and be happy. Second, keeping your feelings inside for fear of being too vulnerable doesn’t help you in the long run. Vulnerability isn’t a sign of weakness. Lastly, the one person you’re meant to be with…you’ll be with.

Where do you hope to see your work in the next 3-5 years?

In the next 3 to 5 years, I’d like to see all my books get the worldwide recognition that I believe they deserve. I hope to see “The College Life Series” made into a television series, and I hope to see “Right as Reign” made into a movie. I want to continue to grow as a writer and produce books that readers will continue to love and connect with. Ultimately, I just want the world to see my vision as clearly as I do and I believe that will happen. I pray for it, and I will continue to work for it.

How can readers connect with you?

Readers can connect with me through multiple outlets. My website is jbvample.com. Through social media: Facebook (Author J.B. Vample), Instagram (@jbvample), Twitter (@jbvample), TikTok (j.b._vample). I also have a YouTube channel (J.B. Vample), where I currently have a few book discussion videos about “The College Life Series.”

What is your definition of a Pretty Woman Who Hustles?

To me, a pretty woman who hustles is a woman who will follow her dreams no matter what. No matter how much time she thinks has passed, no matter the obstacle, no matter how many times she falls. She’s going to pick herself back up, dust herself off, and keep pushing forward. She knows that no one is going to go harder for her than herself.

My inspiration to start entrepreneurship was solidified after being laid off in February 2021 from a Fortune 500 company. The highlight of my career thus far has been the incredible impact that I have left and made on others. Seeing other authors penning their book because they read mine, Chocolate Drop in Corporate America: From The Pit To The Palace. What message do you hope women take away from your platform?

She’s Pretty and Black Owned: Meet Dominique King

I Heart My HBCU is a Black and female-owned spare-change platform dedicated to supporting Historically Black Colleges and Institutions (HBCUs).
Established in 2017, I Heart My HBCU is the first organization to seamlessly integrate spare change technology and targeted fundraising to preserve the rich heritage and combat challenges that lead to the closures of some of these great institutions.

Founder Dominique King, a Houston native and Howard University graduate, is passionate about preserving the viability of these institutions and knows first-hand the importance of not only the cultural significance of HBCUs but the vital role that education plays in the many successes of African Americans for nearly 200 years.

While HBCU alumni are large in numbers, King understands that preserving the tradition will take a community effort and has created an integrative platform for alumni, friends, families, and supporters beyond the traditional donor marketplace. The app includes constantly updated features, including chat rooms, alumni group crowdfunding, a networking exchange, and more.

What inspired the start of ” I Heart My HBCU”? You can include as little or as much detail as you’d like.

I initially created I Heart My HBCU in 2016 to open the donation market to Historically Black Colleges and Universities. As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc in 2018, I supported the organization as we rallied together to raise funds for Bennett College to help prevent it from closing and losing accreditation. At that moment, I knew that my idea was more significant than I had originally envisioned, and I needed to help ensure that no other HBCU had to endure the same challenge.

What has been the biggest challenge of running a brand like ” I Heart My HBCU”?

The biggest challenges that I have faced since launching I Heart My HBCU aside from the traditional start-up issues, would have to be navigating the scope of tech within a non-profit space, and understanding how to protect the ideation while still focusing on effectively growing the business.

How does ” I Heart My HBCU ” impact the community?

At face value, it is a monetary impact, but it’s bigger than that. I Heart My HBCU is influencing a new cultural norm in changing how we give to HBCUs.

By encouraging donors to select more than one institution, our goal is to build up not just the well-known names but encourage the community to support the lesser-known HBCUs, so no one is forgotten. We aim to create a community environment with the hopes of creating thoughtful conversations that can spur change.

How can readers donate and directly be a part of this great movement?

The app is available for both iOS and Android in their respective app stores.

Where do you hope to see your brand in the next 3-5 years?

Ultimately, we want to continue to scale up as an organization, supporting more, donating more, and reaching more members of the HBCU alumni, friends, and family network. In the immediate, our goal over the next 12-24 months is to achieve 10,000 user downloads per institution, one day reaching the 1,000,000-user mark.

I also envision I Heart HBCU bringing my community together to uplift one another for initiatives that go beyond the HBCU community but impact the Black community at large.

What advice do you have for the next generation of entrepreneurs?

It may sound cliché but follow your dreams. “Vision without action is just a dreamaction without vision just passes the time, and vision with action can change the world.”- Nelson Mandela

What does being “Pretty and Black Owned” mean to you?

Pretty Girls Rock! and let’s be honest Black Girls Do It Better, so Pretty and Black Owned means the epitome of excellence.

She’s Making Herstory: Meet Miriam Pinkney

Miriam Pinkney is the Founder and CEO of Miriam P Life Coaching. She is esteemed for her personal approach in coaching for women, men, and children alike. With her frequent love challenges (to point out the importance of self-care), prayer breakfasts, and summits, individuals leave empowered and equipped to show up and show out as their whole self – healed and ready to commit fully to all they have in store. This year she has fully rebranded and is in the works of launching her first annual Faith, Fashion, and Fitness Summit.

What Inspired your start in entrepreneurship?

I watched my parents in my 20s started having rental properties and to see how the extra income helped out tremendously inspired me. I also believe in leaving an inheritance for not only my children but for their children as well. And I figured the best way to do so was to use my passions and gift to help others while receiving an extra income.

What obstacles have you had to overcome to get where you are today?

Self-doubt may be the biggest obstacle. Anything that contributed to self-sabotage, I had to overcome. Because I was rejected so much growing up and in my early adulthood, I began to reject myself. I began to question if what I bring to the table was good enough. I had to use the strategies I teach my clients to ensure I overcame so that I can not only have a moment of success but keep it.

What message of hope do you have for upcoming entrepreneurs?

It is challenging but it doesn’t have to be difficult if you create a discipline within yourself to continue. Consistency is what causes one to win not motivation. So create a discipline. Continue to sow your time, your gifts, even your money, and watch you reap a harvest. Do it for yourself but also do it for a legacy you’re leaving behind (whether you have kids or not, someone is coming up under you).

What are your top 3 go-to songs for motivation to keep going after your goals?

The Wind of God by Vashawn Mitchell, The Promises of God by Carnail Stokes (not sure if it’s actually released yet but his entire album helps me stay grounded and yielded to my God), and Golden by Jill Scott.

What is your definition of a pretty woman who hustles?
I’m not quite sure if I would call what I do a hustle. But in the context of this question, I would say a woman who is disciplined, a woman who is diligent, a woman who is willing to invest in herself for a greater, better outcome. But also a woman who also understands rest and how it truly does affect creativity and productivity.
