First things first, how did we develop an interest in writing?

My major is actually in creative writing. I’ve also loved the outlet of writing and how therapeutic it can be.

When did you realize you had a story that the world needed to hear?

I first realized I had a story to tell the world when people thought they knew who I was. I refused to let others write my story, so I decided to do it.

What was the writing process like, did you come up with your title first and build around it or did the manuscript come first?

I wrote my book by simply letting the words flow and then I strutted it into chapters. The title of my book came during the whole writing process I had no idea at first what the title was going to be.

What is the message behind your title?

Finding My Sparkle means finding that inner self-love that exudes from the inside out. Other people can’t help but see that “sparkle” shining through.

Can you share 3 takeaways you would like women to take away from your book?

-Don’t let anyone define who are you.

-Don’t be afraid to share your story, you never know who needs to hear it.

-Do whatever it is you want to do. There are no glass ceilings.

At any moment during your writing process did you experience writer’s block, what tips do you have for overcoming it?

I didn’t necessarily have writer’s block but I did have to push through an emotional wall. When I started writing and reflecting I often found myself starting to cry. It brought back so many emotions that I had suppressed, I had to walk away from writing for a few weeks. I pushed through and kept going however because I remembered my “why.” Why I started writing the book in the first place.

Take me through the first moment you held your book in your hands, what did that feel like for you?

When I first saw and held my book it was really an amazing experience – I actually cried. I was also nervous because it was actually getting real that other people would read my story.

What would you say was the most challenging part of your writing process?

The most challenging part of your writing process is simply starting.

– What key tips do you have for marketing your book and getting it out to the masses?

What audience is your book written for?

It’s for anyone who needs to find their sparkle 🙂

Meet Author Terri Banner Fitzsimmons

Terri Banner Fitzsimmons is the author, motivational speaker, and best-selling author of 4 books. Her biggest passion is helping women achieve their passion for life, to break free of all the doubts they cling to that stop them from recognizing their worth. She didn’t return to school until she was forty, and with the help of the counselors and professors, she could graduate valedictorian in her master’s Program. She went on to get her teaching degree and a certificate in special education training. She had adopted two teenage boys with fetal alcohol syndrome, so she could understand what the students in her classes needed. She resides near Palm Springs, where she continues writing and counseling women. After the Camp Fire in 2018, which took everything from her, she worked in Medford, Oregon, with special needs, until the pandemic.

In this interview, she tells about her book “Phoenix Rising from the Ashes,” a powerful true story of her survival after Camp Fire in 2018. It is her personal journey from victim to thriver. After she learned she had lost everything in the fire, her home, and her identity, she found an inner strength she never knew she had; she had to move forward. She had to survive. Facing numerous obstacles, she forged ahead, realizing that the person she was before the fire was buried in those ashes. She was transformed by tragedy, arising like the true Phoenix, helping other victims, and counseling them to move ahead with their lives.

First things first, how did we develop an interest in writing?

I was born with a vivid imagination! Even before I could read, I would conjure up imaginary playmates who would accompany me on all sorts of adventures. The thrill of seeing stories develop on paper kept me at my desk for many hours until my father discouraged my writing, stating it was too immature.

When did you realize you had a story the world needed to hear?

All my life, I felt like I was living a peripheral life: I was always on the outside, looking in. Being insecure did not stop me from visualizing myself as someone who would shine as a writer. Being in college at the age of 40 offered me the opportunity to tell my story. I started a club called The RASCALS – Returning Adult SClub and Learning Society – to help other older women overcome their insecurities and succeed in school. I began research on Returning Adults, which became my master’s thesis. I gave my lectures and presentations on my work.

What was the writing process like? Did you come up with your title first and build around it, or did the manuscript come first?

The symbol of ‘Phoenix Rising from the Ashes’ inspired my first book. I was the Phoenix, reborn from the fire in Paradise, California. Who I was before the fire was not who I was when I emerged from it. After the fire, I suffered many nightmares from having to escape the town of Paradise on a school bus with children. The sounds of people screaming, the exploding tanks, and seeing the flames in the distance, ready to engulf us haunted me every night. I wrote down my thoughts in a daily journal, and my counselor suggested I turn my journal into a book as it could help other fire victims. So my journal morphed into a manuscript, telling the story of my move to Paradise, my short time living then, and the fire and its aftermath. The title is my constant reminder of who I have become, a strong woman who chose to be a survivor instead of a victim.

What is the message behind your title?

“Stress is not what happens to us, it is our response to what happens, and our response is something we choose.” Everything in our life is based on perception: How we view life determines how we will feel and act. I can define my experience with the fire and its aftermath as a tragedy from which I never will recover, or I can reframe the experience as one which offered me an opportunity to grow stronger; I had to lose everything to gain everything. Who I was before the fire is buried in the ashes.

Can you share 3 takeaways you would like women to take away from your book?

● It is crucial that we reframe our lives to perceive what happened to us in the past did not make us victims. “I had to spend months trying to regain my identity after the fire, replacing my green card, passport, and transcripts.” Reframed: “After the fire, I became resourceful, buying a laptop the next day and getting all the necessary paperwork to get my documents.” “I am a victim.”Reframed: “I am still alive. I am a survivor.”

●     “You are not alone.” When tragedy strikes, be it the loss of a loved one, a flood, earthquake, or tornado, there are thousands around the world suffering with you. What makes the difference between a survivor and a victim is how one perceives the tragedy. Tragedies allow us to reach inside ourselves and find the inner strength we never knew we had. For months I kept a map that showed where all the survivors of Paradise had relocated. Red dots signified their destinations. It reinforced the knowledge that there were thousands like me striving to build a new life.

● We are what we choose to be. Our life is based on the choices we make. We can choose to be a victim of circumstance, or we can choose to be a survivor. Before we start bemoaning what happens to us, we need to decide how we are going to react to it.

At any moment during your writing process, did you experience writer’s block? What tips do you have for overcoming it?

Because of my own insecurities, I would stop the writing process altogether! I have perhaps fifteen unfinished articles and manuscripts saved on my computer. I still have my father’s words ringing in my ears “You will never be a writer.” But then, something would trigger my imagination – a golden nugget from a movie or a book, and I would be back at the keyboard, outlining a new project. Of course, there would be times when I was stymied when I couldn’t make the words flow, so I would leave my work alone, sometimes for a few weeks. I used to say that I was waiting for the dust to settle, giving my brain a chance to accommodate new ideas! Now that I am almost finished my new book, I am toying with the idea of revisiting my unfinished manuscripts.

All authors experience writer’s block. The key is not to give up and delete our work. Take a break from writing and let your mind relax.

Take me through the first moment you held your book in your hands; what did that feel like for you?

When I first saw the cover of my book, the vibrant phoenix in the middle, I burst into tears as I held it to my chest. Inside that book were my thoughts, my fears, and my memories. I had overcome a lifetime of insecurity to write a book about who I was. I cherish this memory as it was the impetus for me to continue writing.

What would you say was the most challenging part of your writing process?

Writing requires discipline. I have to set a specific time each day to write.

What key tips do you have for marketing your book and getting it out to the masses?

I am naive about the process of writing. Unfortunately, I spent thousands of dollars with one company that promised me the moon. I had many book signings lined up, and then the Pandemic hit. I never had any results with the company, and I do not have the funds to market my books now. I do have a website, and I write articles where I mention my books.

What audience is your book written for?

Young adults to seniors: It is for anyone who has experienced grief or loss in their lives.

Who is Charron Monaye, in five words?

A Woman Who Creates Legacies!

How did you get your start in writing, can you remember the first time you picked up a pen?

Writing has always been therapy for me. Being a person who is selective with communicating, I tend to hold things in, and as a kid, this was my life. I have always felt, and sometimes still do, that people could care less about you, your feelings, life struggles, or things that may be affecting you. I mean, let’s face it, who out here doesn’t have something going on? So it has always been my belief that people ask questions, that they really don’t want the answer to, but asking out of generating conversation or asking to get in your business to either judge or gossip about you. Thus, to keep my name and their judgment out of their mouth, I wrote.

I picked up my pen, I want to say in the 3rd grade. My teacher, Dr. Ida D. Dark, taught me the power of words through poetry. She showed me how to write messages, stories, and feelings through the expression of stanzas. She always shared with me that, “Words don’t need to form a complete sentence to change lives”. Between that statement and her education, I penned my first poem, Alone, at the age of 12 years old. That poem led me to win a Poetry Contest with the U.S. Library of Congress, become a published author at the age of 14, perform my poem at a UNCF Telethon, write professional articles for news outlets and magazines, become a songwriter for a few R & B artist, write play scripts, and write books.

What inspired the creation of “The Adventures of Michelle” children’s book series?

The Adventures of Michelle was never supposed to go beyond the first book, Michelle and Her Magical Pen, which was released on November 4, 2020. To be honest, during Covid, I was looking for something to write about, as I had run out of life experiences and drama to share. Thus, seeking a new genre. One day, one of my authors sent me his book files for distribution and it was a children’s book. From the illustrations and cute story, I was like, “I want to do that too”. So, he connected me with his illustrator, India Sheana and it was on.

Then once Michelle and Her Magical Pen was released, the feedback received was so incredible, I started writing more. More turned into a series, and I am still writing and India is still illustrating. To date, there are 8 books, 1 activity book, and a Reading is Fun Beach Towel. Michelle within the series, These books are a whole movement.

You have authored over twenty-five books in several different genres, what message has remained true throughout the pages of every book?

My continued message is, “If I can, you can”. I am committed to writing stories, regardless of if it’s non-fiction, children’s, devotionals, or self-help. I feel that it’s my responsibility to lead with inspiration, motivation, and lessons learned. There are a lot of people out here, hurting, frustrated, confused, and looking for direction with this thing called life. Listen, life doesn’t come with a manual or a cheat sheet to make living more manageable. However, I feel that, as we go and grow through things we should share tips, strategies, or present ideas and/or different perspectives to help others achieve faster or with less stress.

So if you are interested in learning what I did to get out of debt, find your “why”, understand your purpose, and how I managed to sustain my business, while being an employed federal employee and single mother, then any of my books will benefit you. Also, if you have children who are seeking education through fun, exploration, and representation, then “The Adventures of Michelle” children’s books are for them!

As someone with theatrical experience, can you share what has been the highlight of your theatre career thus far?

Hands down, I have to say my play “Get Out OF Your Own Way”. That play, to date, is my favorite and best play ever! Since starting my theatrical scriptwriting journey in 2012, I have written and produced 5 theatrical productions, for myself, and written and/or directed 3 for other authors.

But my biggest highlight was producing my play, “Get Out Of Your Way”, and that’s simply because it was my first production that premiered in Hollywood, California, and Off-Broadway in New York. And remind you, I was living in Philadelphia, PA., at the time. So I was producing this play, hiring a team, running team meetings via zoom, and sitting in on rehearsals via Facetime all from Philly. Talk about having trust! But I must say, from the director to the production team and cast, they showed up and when the play premiered in both states, we sold out every show.

Tell us about Pen Legacy Publishing, what do you hope authors take away from your platform?

Pen Legacy Publishing is one of the pillars of my company Pen Legacy LLC. Pen Legacy, LLC., is a literary conglomerate dedicated to helping aspiring writers share their stories by supplying a platform to elevate their unique voices. Since its inception, in 2008, Pen Legacy has evolved to include a publishing, scriptwriting, and ghostwriting division.

Now as it relates to our publishing division, we have successfully published over one hundred books, with about 62% becoming Amazon Bestsellers and others generating corporate deals, speaking engagements, film deals, and academia placement. I am also proud to note that our company is behind the successful author careers of Ms. Evelyn Braxton (Braxton Family Values), Precious L. Williams, Esq. (Corporate Trainer with BMW, MasterCard, and Pitch Coach for the TV show, Shark Tank), Ty Johnston-Chavis (TV & Film Producer, TV Showrunner) and Debbie D. Douglas (Talent Recruiter for Paramount Network) to name a few.

For me, as the founder and owner of Pen Legacy, and all of its sub-divisions, it is always my hope that people know that we are a literary company that understands the power of stories, words, and being heard. We understand the pressure and rejection of traditional publishers but is committed to offering you the same benefits while you are able to maintain creative control. With Pen Legacy, you own your voice, your rights, and your royalties…. We just make sure that your story is heard and globally available!

You have spent a good portion of your career being the amazing woman behind some of our favorite celebrities, and influencers’ books, Can you tell us about this experience? What goes into Ghostwriting someone else’s story?

Ghostwriting is not for the faint at heart, but I enjoy it. Working with so many people, celebrities or non-celebrities, being able to learn from, for me is key. Sitting at some of the feet of the people I have written for is an experience that is truly unforgettable. From the history lessons, free coaching, and lived advice, it’s unmatched. In addition to learning and being a student to the person, you get to learn more about their story, journey, lessons and wins. You have the opportunity to gain insight and gems that can be used in your life. However, if you are someone who takes on people’s feelings and emotions, or has a hard time digesting trauma or pain, ghostwriting can be a challenge.

Depending on the story, it is your job to become that person. I often tell people, “Ghostwriting is like stepping out of your body, and stepping in theirs so you can feel, understand, live, and sound like them for the sake of the story.” It’s almost like the role and process of an actor. When they get a script, they step out of their lives and become who the character is. This is ghostwriting. People know when I am ghostwriting because I am not myself. My energy is off, the conversation is different, and depending on how deep or dark the story is, I may fall into a state of depression or become suicidal. Remember, you are embodying that person. Ghostwriting can be a daunting job, but the reward outweighs the pain, the majority of the time.

What is next for you?
Whatever God has for me! To be honest, I’m in a season where I am moving in strategy, only aligning myself to things that are connected to my passion and assignment. So, of course, more writing books, ghostwriting, and assisting corporate entities with writing projects and creating content. If you need a writer, contact me at http://www.charronmonaye.com

Denise is known for her Shaderoom appearance, where she was viewed by over a million people to inspire. Since then Denise has had small encouraging snippets on her platforms to keep people moving toward their transformation.

“I want to help people heal from the inside out. While showing them my truth through vulnerability. Confronting my shadow and living in my light.” Denise Carson

First things first, how did we develop an interest in writing?

I became interested in writing when I connected with myself after the cocoon/ dark times. When I was younger I loved to write poetry and small stories. But when I grew my passion for writing faded as life began to take hold. I lost myself while searching for myself. So writing allowed me to reconnect to my original source. The paper never judged so writing kept my interest.

When did you realize you had a story that the world needed to hear?

I realized I had a story the world needed to hear when my inner circle began to be transformed by my healing. It began to trickle down into my family and friends watching me conquer darkness. So I thought to myself Purpose is not a talent, it’s an assignment. I mastered the cocoon and gain knowledge about it so I can show others. Everybody has two sides to them light and shadow but Many don’t know who their shadow is. So the results in self-destruction and repeated lessons. Why hold in the ability to help someone see their darkness? It was selfish of me not to speak up.

What was the writing process like, did you come up with your title first and build around it or did the manuscript come first?

The writing process for me starts at the end then I proceed to the beginning. Many of my book covers are already done but the book is still being manifested. I start with an end in mind. The vision comes through the title and the cover. The content comes from life but it makes me accountable to obtain a goal.

What is the message behind your title?

The message behind my book Confront Your Shadow. Is to simply show people that there are two sides to every human. A lightworker and a shadow. Many people’s shadow was birth during dark times and proceeded in their everyday lives. Anger, frustration, fear, abandonment, and rejection are all shadow ammo that keeps us stuck. The thought was birth when you went through a dark time. Such as death, termination, breakup, disrespect, molestation, and abuse. All these things lead to a darker person if we don’t heal the experience correctly. Now healing correctly can lead us into believing dark thoughts that are not true. Then those dark thoughts begin to manifest in our reality. I am not good enough, this will never happen, I don’t deserve this is all statements birth from experiencing something you desired with a negative effect. Transform your Mind, transform your life. The purpose behind my title is to help give people the courage to confront the parts of themselves that are holding them back.

Can you share 3 takeaways you would like women to take away from your book?

The three takeaways I would like women to take from my book:

1. All things happen for a reason and are birth in darkness

2. Don’t let the caterpillar outdo you. The caterpillar to had to go through a dark cocoon unexpectedly but came out with wings. If you feel like giving up look at the tree that was birth in darkness from a tiny seed but stand tall.

3. Don’t be afraid to take accountability and say… “I forgive myself”

At any moment during your writing process did you experience writer’s block, what tips do you have for overcoming it?

During my writing process, I never force myself to write. I don’t put timelines on books I surrender in writing. Surrendering in writing is allowing whatever flows to flow and when you are done stop. Then when the inspiration comes again then proceed. Never force yourself to finish the assignment you were obedient to birth. Have a strategy for the execution.

If you are experiencing writing block. That means life wants you to live the lesson you are trying to express. You are writing about something that hasn’t come to flourish yet. You have to allow yourself to flow freely and don’t force things. Meditate to unlock what is stuck then proceed.

Take me through the first moment you held your book in your hands, what did that feel like for you?

The moment I held my book in my hand I cried because I completed something. That was my growth following through

What would you say was the most challenging part of your writing process?

The most challenging part of my writing process is being vulnerable and transparent. The more I tell the more I have a target on my back. My light disrupts some demons so I had to be prepared for that.

What key tips do you have for marketing your book and getting it out to the masses?

My key tip for marketing a book is being authentic. People want to meet you the person who experienced it. Not the one looking down on people who are still experiencing dark times.

What audience is your book written for?

My book’s audience is written for people who have experienced dark times and wonder what lessons in their life repeat that they don’t want in their universe.

Juniper Jillian Joy’s Story of Transformation: From Blues to Bliss

Juniper Jillian Joy, formerly known as Tammie Shannon, is a Renaissance woman of the twenty-first century. Joy is
most known for having two successful careers, one as a soulful Nashville Recording Blues Artist Singer/Songwriter
while, also managing her own business, Shannon Success Strategies, as a life coach and financial strategist creating niche strategies for her high net worth clients focusing on tax-free retirement solutions as well as teaching business leaders how to use intentions targeted at the inner child experience to build and grow their businesses and most recently, a book author.

Juniper Jillian Joy discusses her transition from blues artist to life coach to author. In this interview, Joy discusses how she overcame trauma as a child, how her passion for songwriting inspired her to tell stories, and the message of her book. Find out the three lessons Joy hopes women will learn from her book and how she overcame writer’s block. Prepare to be moved by Joy’s inspiring story of self-discovery and transformation as she guides others to heal their inner child and find inner joy, love, and peace.

How did you develop an interest in writing?

My experience and love of songwriting for myself and others transferred to storytelling in book form. The First Story of Intentions: The Introduction to the Inner Child is providing the opportunity for me to produce an awesome audio expansion of the book as I created a unique tone for each character’s voice through my voice.

When did you realize you had a story that the world needed to know and hear?

It was when I expressed and released my feelings of trauma through my album, “All of Me,” and it was nominated for Blues Album of the Year and Blues Artist of the Year in 2018 by L A Music Critics. That’s when I knew people wanted to hear what I had to say and I decided, since the world is listening, I was going to make it count by sharing what I’ve learned because it’s too amazing to keep to myself!

What was the writing process like? Did you come up with your title first and build around it or did you do the manuscript first?

My story was consistent throughout the book writing. I started out with titles and chapter outlines but tweaks, fine tuning for clarity of strategies and messages enhanced the characters and their messages which were ultimately changing and evolving until the time of publication.

As my awareness and appreciation deepened, the implications for the breadth and depth of my story were revealed. This book, as is my life, is a “360 Live ” story of peace, love and joy. It is a very intimate connection with God, His love and intentions for each of us.

It offers the readers the exciting opportunity to become a part of the book as it progresses to the culmination of the story.  These participatory and experiential pieces unfolded beautifully for a heart-felt ending…or beginning! You have the chance to decide.

What is the message behind your title?

The connection to your inner child is absolutely necessary for emotional, mental, physical and spiritual health.  This connection with your inner child is where joy comes from within each of us because the inner child is the part of God within us.

The First Story of Intentions: The Introduction to the Inner Child is just the beginning of Juniper Jillian Joy’s open, intimate and vulnerable channeling of God’s messages for hope, faith and belief for peace of mind, love in heart and joy in all areas of life.

Can you share three takeaways you would like women to take away from your book?

The First Story of Intentions: The Introduction to the Inner Child is an unfolding story of the past, the present and the future.

It addresses emotional and physical health, anxiety, empowerment, energy-balance of male and female energy, self-regulation, co-regulation and communication of the inner child connection all of which are a part of the following current issues for women, men, families and children.

This book addresses not only the issues but introduces the reader to strategies to transform circumstances and conditions the reader uncovers in their own situation(s). It includes the stories and voices of each and every one of us at some point in our life.

Strategies for healing, guidelines for clear decision making, discernment and prevention check-check and tap-tap system is developed through vivid, sensitive and heart felt story telling. I have experienced everything I write about.

The numbers are clear about primary issues affecting both women and men, often women being a bit more prone are shocking. Anxiety, depression, bipolar and PTSD mental health issues are the top 4 depending on the researcher. Factors impacting our youth are depression, drug, alcohol and sexual activity as forms of self-medication, obesity, dealing with bullying and social media. Families struggle with denial and secrecy, poor communication, a closed system (family members are afraid to speak up or seek help from outside sources), rigid rules, role reversal-parentification, unrealistic expectations, failure to respect boundaries, conditional love or love withdrawal, lack of boundaries between parent and children just to mention a few.

The First Story of Intentions: The Introduction to the Inner Child addresses these challenges so that you can overcome them.

At any moment during your writing process did you experience writer’s block? What tips do you have for overcoming it?

Yes, there were many times when I needed to step back, allow myself time to process what I was feeling and then move forward all in divine time. One of the delights about the type of writing I do, sharing intimately, openly and vulnerably, includes consistent unfolding of new awareness that requires my recalibration to expand and enhance myself and explore my whole unified self. Discernment takes place to determine what is meant only for me or what goes into the book.

The story of 3-year-old Sara and 5-year-old Cindy represents all of us. The First Story of Intentions emphasizes the significance and the power of intention and how everyone can use intentions to change any circumstance as a roadmap of experiences and my visionary, empath, spiritual warrior gifts that project me and anyone that desires change in their life.

So, I surrendered to God’s will. I released the pressures and stresses of deadlines, some self-determined and other’s external controls. I took necessary self-care and self-love steps during the seemingly “down time.” During the writing process, I integrated the needs of my inner child, created games to actively fire all three parts of my brain, left brain, right brain and amygdala that were fun. Everything I do is intended to bring peace, love and joy into my life and the lives of others by incorporating activities that nurtured that heart, mind, body and soul of every reader.

First things first, how did we develop an interest in writing?

I’ve always loved writing. It’s the “one thing” I’ve always been good at. I worked as a digital journalist for years, writing publications for news stations, and decided it was time to publish my own work.

When did you realize you had a story that the world needed to hear?

I knew that I had a story to share with the world after realizing how many people today are entrepreneurs and how my generation makes up a large portion of the nation’s consumer market.

What was the writing process like, did you come up with your title first and build around it or did the manuscript come first?

The writing process started after I obtained my master’s in public relations. I did extensive studying and research in social media marketing and public relations. I felt that the knowledge I gained could help so many business owners. I was well aware of the topic I wanted to write about, but I struggled with the title. So, the title was the final piece.

What is the message behind your title?

The message behind my title is social media is the leading tool, if used effectively, to influence millennial and Gen Z consumers.

Can you share 3 takeaways you would like women to take away from your book?

After reading my book, I want women, especially women in business, to have an understanding of how to expand their brand, convert their audience into customers, and use social media to their advantage.

At any moment during your writing process did you experience writer’s block, what tips do you have for overcoming it?

I never experienced writer’s block, but I did struggle with how much to include in the book and what should be omitted. I wanted my book to be informative, but also “easy reading.” I would encourage writers to put themselves in the position of their audience and create work that you would want to read.

Take me through the first moment you held your book in your hands, what did that feel like for you?

I felt really accomplished after holding my book for the first time. Aside from launching my business, my book is my biggest project thus far.

What would you say was the most challenging part of your writing process?

The most challenging part of my writing process was dedicating time to complete the book. My schedule can be demanding and while writing the book, I relocated from Tennessee to Georgia. So, there were periods where I would go a while without writing.

What key tips do you have for marketing your book and getting it out to the masses?

When working to get your book to the masses, it’s important to make sure it’s easy for people to purchase your book. Determine the best communications channels to reach your target audience and use the channels that will give you the greatest reach for your marketing budget. Remember that marketing and communication is an ongoing process, so be consistent in promoting your book.

What audience is your book written for?

My book is written for business owners, entrepreneurs, and marketers whose products/services with millennial and Gen Z consumers.

Renee was born and raised in South Haven Michigan, a beautiful beach town along Lake Michigan.  She met and married her husband Garry in Malibu Lake California, where they raised their two children.  Renee always had a passion for the arts, which included painting and avidly playing the piano. Through God, Renee turned her artistic passion into purpose through opening successful art studios in both California and Texas. Renee also is a seasoned professional artist who paints angels and animals as she perceives them in Heaven.  Her artwork has touched many of all ages, and some of her pieces have been dedicated and gifted to notable figures, including Bishop T.D. Jakes.

As a genuinely passionate artist, and advocate for women’s choice for treatment, Renee is looking to solidify her stance in the world by showing everyone that your faith can be stronger than medicinal options. Purpose-driven art, medical treatment awareness, and faith during adversarial times shine through as Renee’s life purpose, and she wants to bring you along for the ride. This is a testimonial that relates to her journey…..all you have to do is “just believe”.

First things first, how did we develop an interest in writing? When did you realize you had a story that the world needed to hear?

My interest in writing only came after having this unbelievable event in my life, and to my family’s life.  Once it resolved itself by the grace of God, I knew the story needed to be told. I felt that by writing the story, it might help other women going through the same or similar experience. I knew no one could write about this life experience but me so I began taking notes of the sequence of events that took place. My dearest friend and minister, Jacquala Shropshire, read my notes and urged me to write a book so that my story would be heard. So, with much faith and God’s undeniable love, I got up every morning at 4:00 AM and like another miracle, eventually it developed into my story, my book that I wrote entirely myself.

What was the writing process like, did you come up with your title first and build around it or did the manuscript come first?

I decided in the early morning hours, after much prayer, that “600 Angels” would be the cover of my book. After much thought, my publisher, Dr. Angela Banks and I, decided to change it to “How 600 Angels changed my life”.

What is the message behind your title?

The message behind the title of my book “How 600 Angels Saved My Life”, is that after what happened to me, I believe there are Angels all around us, helping us, protecting us. Heaven is real!

Can you share 3 takeaways you would like women to takeaway from your book?

I hope that after reading my book, women feel that they are not alone, they should know their choices for their bodies, and that having faith is just as important as having good health.

At any moment during your writing process did you experience writers block, what tips do you have for overcoming it?

I didn’t really have the typical definition of writer’s block, but what did happen was that I would have these lengthy pauses in my writing process because so many times it was extremely hard to relive the experiences that happened to me.

Take me through the first moment you held your book in your hands, what did that feel like for you?

I felt a bit faint, excited and very proud that I had finally accomplished what God had set before me. I felt very blessed.

What would you say was the most challenging part of your writing process?

The most challenging part of my writing process was the gut- wrenching truthfulness of what happened to me.  To write this painful, personal journey, opening up my life, was immensely difficult to relive.

What key tips do you have for marketing your book and getting it out to the masses? First and foremost my faith in God, and believing in myself.  And hiring EPI Media was the very best decision.  They have been very instrumental in building my early success and promoting my book in every way!

What audience is your book written for?

I believe that my story can touch any woman at any age that needs help and encouragement for the many challenges that life brings.  Remember, Just Believe!

Meet Author Marie McKenzie

Marie McKenzie is a #1 Amazon Bestselling author of her first book, a memoir, “Things That Keep Me Up at Night,” which was released in June of 2021.

She is currently co-authoring her first novel with the NK Tribe Called Success. She is an accomplished Registered Nurse, educator, community volunteer, victims’ advocate, and trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. Born in Jamaica, Marie migrated to the United States of America in 1989, and currently resides in Orlando, FL, with her husband George.

When she is not on the job, she volunteers and advocates for survivors of sexual violence, domestic violence, and the homeless. She has volunteered for food banks, crisis pregnancy centers, and homeless organizations. She is a past board member of the Inner Truth Project, which strives to change the conversation surrounding sexual violence and help survivors find their voices.

First things first, how did you develop an interest in writing?

My interest in writing was ignited after I entered a 90-Day Writing challenge hosted by USA Today Bestselling Author, Naleighna Kai, during which I wrote my memoir, Things That Keep Me Up At Night. The opportunity connected me with the NK Tribe Called Success, a group of phenomenal authors—USA Today, international and national bestselling—who freely guided and supported me at every step of my journey.

When did you realize you had a story that the world needed to hear?

A few months prior to writing my memoir, I was a guest on a Podcast, where I spoke about my role as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. During the show, I shared my experience with sexual assault. I later shared the podcast with family and friends, and although shocked at first, they were very supportive and some opened up and shared their own stories of victimization and survival.

Some were struggling to heal. I call that SHUT IN – Silently Hurting due to Unresolved Trauma (caused by rape/sexual assault) and Internalizing (shame, anger, fear, anxiety, reliving the trauma) Needlessly.

Some verbalized that my story helped them regain their voice and power. “If you have been through all that and survived and are sharing your story, I can do the same.”

What was the writing process like, did you come up with your title first and build around it or did the manuscript come first?

The manuscript came first, then we brainstormed with a few titles and settled on Things That Keep Me Up At Night.

What is the message behind your title?

The message is that I am no longer bound by the Things That Keep Me Up At Night. I thought of changing the title to Things That Kept Me Up At Night but opted to keep it as is. Because like an addict there will always be triggers, healing is lifelong, but, when the memories come, I have tools to subdue them. I’m no longer SHUT IN – Silently Hurting due to Unresolved Trauma Internalizing Needlessly.

Can you share 3 takeaways you would like women to take away from your book?

I would like women to know that:

  1. Healing is possible – they can heal, survive, and thrive.
  2. They are not their trauma – someone did something to them. The shame, blame, and guilt belong to the perpetrators.
  3. They are worthy of living a purpose-filled life. If you’re SHUT IN, it’s time to reach out for help to heal.

At any moment during your writing process did you experience writer’s block, what tips do you have for overcoming it?

Yes, I have experienced writer’s block and there is so much one can do.

Tips –

  1. Write about something else, another chapter, or a topic. It doesn’t need to be in order and can be fixed later.
  2. Stop writing and do something you enjoy – talk walk, exercise, (I lifted weights)
  3. Brainstorm with a friend.
  4. Read a book.
  5. Meditation/Affirmations

Take me through the first moment you held your book in your hands, what did that feel like for you?

The first moment I held my book was exhilarating! I was grinning from ear to ear, my heart was racing; just overjoyed and wasn’t sure how to act.

What would you say was the most challenging part of your writing process?

Marketing was and is the most challenging part of the process – It’s a constant process and a daily intentional journey. Need to be creative to find new readers and keep my book in the public’s eyes.

What key tips do you have for marketing your book and getting it out to the masses?

1. Connect and collaborate with other authors and cross-promote each other’s work.

2. Find a Tribe that will support you. People you can always trust to have your back.

3. Be intentional and promote often/daily even, attend events, and seek out speaking engagements to share about your work.

4, Be engaged with readers/audience. People don’t want to see or hear of you only when you’re selling.

What audience is your book written for?

My book is written for survivors of sexual assault/rape/domestic violence and the people and organizations who love and support them.

Meet Author Lynnecia S. Eley

Lynnecia S. Eley is a career-driven entrepreneur, wife, and mother. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, she is an award-winning University Assistant Dean and Adjunct Professor that is committed to excellence, dedication, and caring for others. Known as the Confidence Doula, Lynnecia is a best selling author and coach providing guidance and support to help women and young adults feel self-assured in their abilities to Birth with Purpose.

Lynnecia is also the founder of Two Queens Media, Black & Ivy League, Inc., Soigne’ + Swank Magazine® and Eta Rho Sigma Sorority, Inc. – all brands that promote and support community growth in business, education, and the media/publishing space. She is a Certified DISC Personality Analyst and Business Coach. She received her bachelor’s in business management from the University of Phoenix, earned her executive master’s in program and portfolio management from Georgetown University, and holds many professional and graduate certificates.

First things first, how did you develop an interest in writing?

I’m an academic at heart. My love for learning and creative writing was an early interest. I wrote poems as a kid and I learned that I was so much better at writing my words than speaking them. I had the desire to share, but also had a fear of public speaking. Writing helped me to get my thoughts out on paper. I also used it as a tool for narrative therapy.

As a young adult I used to struggle with anxiety and attachment issues. Chapter two of my book is titled “Write it down, don’t hold it in” as an introduction to journaling and an easy way to get started in using writing to identify your life’s purpose. When you put your thoughts on paper, you open yourself up to processing everything that has been backlogged. You allow yourself to empty your mind, and bring clarity to how you are experiencing your life and going after your goals.

When did you realize you had a story that the world needed to hear?

Birth with Purpose started out as a blog post that grew into an article intended to be published in a business publication. After letting a close friend read the article and receiving feedback of wanting more, I turned the article into an eBook. I shared that eBook with 5 women and they all responded with wanting more and requesting worksheets or exercises to unpack the steps that I was giving. This is when I started to realize that there were more entrepreneurs out there that were struggling with a need of finding a personal source of value and how to look within and ask questions that inspire growth and a reason for going after a true passion.

What was the writing process like, did you come up with your title first and build around it or did the manuscript come first?

After realizing I did in fact have a book inside of me, I shifted my mindset to positioning how I will use the book. The book I wanted to write was going to be geared to target entrepreneurial-minded individuals, by teaching them that success in their business comes from within, which will lead to my ultimate goal of being recognized as the business confidence coach that every entrepreneur needs. I did not start with a title, I started at the end with writing my own book review from my ideal reader’s point of view.

Once the manuscript was done, the book went through at least 3 different title changes and finally through a conversation with my business bestie and writer of the book’s Foreword, she said “this is going to help so many people birth their purpose” and I screamed “THAT’S IT!”, and that’s how Birth with Purpose: 5 Steps to Drive Your Passions & Fuel Your Purpose was born.

What is the message behind your title?

The title of my book is derived from one of Joel Osteen’s sermons “Pregnant with Possibility”. The time leading up to the birthing process of a child is generally 40 weeks from conception. Birthing your idea into a business can also take just as long or even longer. It’s very important to understand and truly identify with the conception of your ideas already being purposeful; so confidently go forward and “Birth with Purpose”.

Birth with Purpose is a guide to help find what drives your passions and fuels your purpose as an introduction into discovering your life’s calling and finding the true desires within that drive your behaviors as a being and specifically as an entrepreneur. God has given us all so many tools that lend to our potential, our gifts, talents and of course our ideas. We are all born with passions that make our hearts smile. Identifying those passions and then doing the work to fuel and birth our true purpose is a journey. It is the nature of how you identify your purpose that helps in making each and everyone’s journey an adventure.

Can you share 3 takeaways you would like women to takeaway from your book?

The 3 main takeaways from BWP is to 1. Look for your passion and it will find you. Start with a self-audit of your happiness. If you want to find your true purpose, then you have to start by getting to know who you are – look within yourself, deep down behind those walls that you swore you will never unhide again. 2. Pursue your purpose and you will feel fulfilled. The fire of our passions carries both energy and discomfort. The key is to use the discomfort as a motivator and the energy as fuel. When we are connected to our roots and our soul, passion rises quickly and pushes us to rise to the next level of life. Anything where the totality of who you truly are is absorbed in the doing, requires passion and leads you to your purpose. And 3. Launch that business, even if it’s not perfect. Avoid the perfection trap when you are going after your dreams, you want to try to avoid making grandiose plans. You don’t have to find the one perfect passion, but instead, you just need to follow the clues that drive your heart’s desires. Step back and look at what you can do today, and then pick what excites you.

At any moment during your writing process did you experience writers block, what tips do you have for overcoming it?

During my writing process, I didn’t experience writer’s block. Instead I battled with not feeling like I had what it took to teach someone how to identify their purpose. I allowed myself to be overcome with imposter syndrome and not realizing that I’ve always had the potential and the confidence to step out of my status quo and completely walk in my God-given purpose. While writing this book I overcame self-doubt, fear and procrastination.

Take me through the first moment you held your book in your hands, what did that feel like for you?

It felt like pure joy coupled with shock and awe! I self-published on Amazon during a summer when there was a huge lag in authors receiving their publishing copies. I received a call from one of my best friends and she asked “where are you?”. At that moment I was turning into a Walmart parking lot and she said pull over. I did and she met me in that parking lot with an Amazon Prime copy of my book. The first time I held a physical copy of Birth with Purpose was also the first day I signed an autograph copy. We were loud as we jumped, hugged, praised God, and cried so much in that parking lot that a gentleman pulled over and wanted to join in on the celebration. It was surreal!

What would you say was the most challenging part of your writing process?

As a business coach and cheerleader of women pursuing their dreams, I acknowledge that the thing that makes me great at coaching is the connection and experience I have to the areas of help and transformation that I provide. The most challenging part of finishing this book was getting out of my own way and overcoming imposter syndrome. Imposter Syndrome is an enemy, especially among black women. I struggled with finding inspiration, support and confidence to share the struggles that I had to overcome to pursue writing in the genre of self help.

What key tips do you have for marketing your book and getting it out to the masses?

The biggest piece of advice I can give about marketing your book is to flaunt your credentials and experience. It’s not going to be all about the book, instead many readers are going to want to know your “why” for writing the book and the problem it’s going to help them resolve. Also, if your genre is self-help, readers are going to want to hear how the advice you’re giving has helped you and that’s what they will identify with. Next, I would encourage authors to get used to talking about your book every chance you get. Yes, email blasts to your lists and social media campaigns can work well too, but connecting readers to your book in everyday conversation is word-of-mouth marketing 101.

You can also host author chats, read-alouds, book signings, and showcase your book at vendor shows and pop-ups.

What audience is your book written for?

The primary audience for Birth with Purpose is entrepreneurs who have an idea but don’t know where to start, and small business owners who are within their first 3 years and are stuck moving to the next level. My typical reader is a woman who has the desire to start a business, but lacks the confidence and accountability to pursue her dream. She is passionate about an idea, but doesn’t know the strategies to take that idea from her heart through implementation and deliver it to the world. She is stuck, she is afraid, she is doubtful. She needs inspiration, teaching, empowerment and support. This book will help her realize her potential and build the confidence needed to step out of the status quo and completely walk in her purpose. She will overcome self-doubt, fear and procrastination.
