A Master of Empowerment: Meet Master Life Coach Jasmine Stokes

Master Life Coach Jasmine Stokes is a Master of All Things but her love is empowering women entrepreneurs to their greater level. Juggling the hats of Wife, Mother, Retired Corporate Bae, Entrepreneur, Author, Speaker, Intercessor and Friend, Coach Jas has learned the dance and balance of self-care and grind.

Coach Jas focuses on empowering women by providing training through her Life Coaching Certification program, by strengthening their foundational structure through prayer and accountability strategies and helping catapult them to achieve their greater end goal.

With over 8 years of experience within Learning and Development, 20 years of experience in Corporate America and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and Finance, Jasmine is well versed in identifying communication and accountability strategies for focusing on the development of one’s strengths and ultimate wins.

Jasmine’s goal is to help other start-up entrepreneurs with their faith walk, mirror experiences, entrepreneurial journey and foundational structure and to truly see their GREATER self.

Jasmine founded The Greater Me Consulting in 2019. The Greater Me Consulting is a Coaching and Consulting business for faith-based minority women. The sole purpose is to empower women to their next level in business and life, which we refer to as their “greater” level. At the Greater Me Consulting, the focus is to educate and support women how to not only survive in their life and business journey but to thrive. We offer products geared towards confidence, empowerment, self-healing and entrepreneurship. The Consulting portion of the business is where we focus specifically on women entrepreneurs and their entrepreneurship journey. Here, we provide Life Coaching Certification training, courses to assist with starting and sustaining their businesses, their personal growth and continued business development.

We had the unique opportunity of speaking with Jasmine, we were able to gain insight on who she is outside of business along with her passions and plans for the next season of her career.

Outside of business and entrepreneurship, who is Jasmine Stokes?

This question always gets to me. As women, outside of the many titles we carry when we remove those this question hits very deep. I am a black woman, filled with faith, who loves to read a good book, sit by the water and get lost in my thoughts. It’s these times I hear the best from God and can just take in life fully. I’m a woman that loves to laugh, enjoys the company of my loved ones and strives to be the best I can be daily. I love to be a helping hand and an answered prayer. Helping others energizes me. I’m blessed to be a wife and a mom, the two titles I hold to the highest regard and as long as my family is good, I’m good.

How did you get your start in the coaching business?

My husband actually. Up late one night and while talking, he told me I should take on coaching seriously. Outside of Iyanla Vanzant, I didn’t know of any coaches. lol. I began to look up programs and found one from a High School alumni, Dr. Karen Ratliff of 365 Consulting Group. Dr. Karen certified me, opened my eyes to the world of coaching and how to properly build a business. From getting certified, I started launching products, was off to speaking and then she had me take it up a notch. Dr. Karen said, “it’s time to be a Master Coach”. I ran from this originally but God didn’t let me run long. Getting my master certification allowed me to help others build their businesses and start their entrepreneurship journey as a certified life coach.

Can you share a little about the benefits of having a life coach in your circle?

A coach will keep you motivated and my most important factor of having a coach is accountability. There are times you run well and are just on point and doing your thing but there are also times you hit a brick wall, your energy is low, your inspiration is almost non-existent and your self belief is hiding. Having my coach gives me a more mature ear to hear me, keen eyesight to help me with my vision and the hand on my back to keep pushing. When I work with a coach, I’m able to see results much quicker because I have someone that believes in what I’m doing and is committed to see me win. That alone is enough energy for me to move. I also enjoy having a coach that has been where I am and knows how to do what I’m trying to do. It’s like having a personal map service.

What drew you to being able to empower women in entrepreneurship, what lesson do you hope women take away from your brand?

In the first year of my business, I found it hard to get information on how to do things like publish books, branding, photoshoots, speaking engagements and the list goes on and on. I had to carve my own lane and from doing this I knew the positivity, empowering attitude and teaching was needed for women. My old corporate mentor would tell me “find a need and meet it”. This became my personal mission. When I can’t find something, instead of complaining, I create it. I offer to women what I was in search of and needed in my beginning phases of business. I want women to know and understand we all can win. We don’t have to withhold information and be jealous. What has my name on it is different from what has their name on it. Many women have been done wrong in the past from other women and my thing is, release it, let it go and be committed to finding your tribe and who you can learn from and grow with.

You hold many titles, one of which is being a mother. How do you balance the day to day demands of family and business?

One of the reasons I left corporate was to have more time to focus on my children. Being a full time entrepreneur has given me the freedom and flexibility with my schedule. I include my children in some of my work and I am very keen on wearing “one hat at a time”. I’ve stopped multi-tasking and allowed myself to be present in every moment. If I’m working, I’m not mommy’ing and when I’m mommy’ing I’m not working. This has been my biggest mindset shift and has impacted me the best. I can’t get my time back and I’m not going to miss big moments or small with my children due to work.

One of the many facets of your brand is coaching and assisting other women into becoming life coaching themselves, can you share a little about your program?

Sure. The certification program to become a life coach is a program that teaches you how to start. Starting is the hardest thing to do. It is a six-week live course, taught by me, that guides you through the coaching principles to establish who you are coaching, why you are coaching and how to properly get your client to their win. During the six weeks you receive group sessions to help you start and build your coaching business, coaching templates, mock coaching sessions, a one-on-one coaching session with me, guest speakers and a personalized strategy for your business upon graduation. The program gives you the tools to be confident as a coach, how to assist your clients in seeing real results and how to build your thriving coaching business. You also receive a coaching empowerment box at graduation. The coaching box is one of the highlights for the coaches.

How do you faith impact where you are today as an entrepreneur and leader in business?

My faith is non-negotiable. I am who I am and where I am today because of God. I told God yes in January of 2015 and I had no idea what that yes would encompass. That yes brought me a promotion, a move to a new state, my husband, my family, another promotion, freedom, entrepreneurship, books, t-shirts, microphones, conferences, new sisters and the list goes on and on. My business, The Greater Me Consulting, is built on God’s word. Grater is He that is within me than he that is within the world. Everyone was created for greatness and greatness lives in us through our father. Will we continue to strive for it? How will we tap into it? That’s what we do at The Greater Me Consulting. Without my yes, without my faith and foundation in the word my business would be non-existent, it would be stagnant, it would not be impactful and it would not be profitable. I am nothing without my faith.

You have spent many years in the corporate world, how did that time prepare you for who are as a business woman? How does it show up now?

I loved being a Corporate Bae. Nothing excited me more than putting on a good pant suit, pulling my hair back in a slick ponytail, putting my pearl earrings on and hitting a board room. lol. Corporate taught me professionalism, it taught me grit, it taught me politics, it taught me time management and endurance, it taught me strategy. Corporate also taught me imposter syndrome, how hard work isn’t always enough and how to advocate for myself. I learned how to serve great leaders in corporate and it taught me the traits I wanted to carry as a leader and the ones I didn’t. The structure of reaching an end goal, setting goals and measuring them, team building and networking show up for me daily in my business. I learned who I was, what I needed and wanted from corporate and that allows me to structure my business the way that benefits me most.

What is next for greater me consulting?

The Greater Me Consulting is on the road to certifying 100 minority women. We have certified 70 to date and once we hit 100, we will begin our business retreats to go along with our current business conference, The. Empower You Conference.

The Greater Me Consulting is also working on additional certifications as we are launching into the contract sector with the U.S government. We will take our empowerment teachings and corporate training into a larger scale and help organizations with their employee engagement and retention.

What is your definition of a Pretty Woman Who Hustles?

Many people cringe at the word hustle while it charges me up. There are seasons for grind, hustle and rest. We must know what season we are in to be productive. My definition of a Pretty Woman Who Hustles is a women who is dedicated and determined to get all she is created for. She’s a woman who prides herself on showing up fully and boldly. First things first, how did we develop an interest in writing?

My major is actually in creative writing. I’ve also loved the outlet of writing and how therapeutic it can be.

When did you realize you had a story that the world needed to hear?

I first realized I had a story to tell the world when people thought they knew who I was. I refused to let others write my story, so I decided to do it.

What was the writing process like, did you come up with your title first and build around it or did the manuscript come first?

I wrote my book by simply letting the words flow and then I strutted it into chapters. The title of my book came during the whole writing process I had no idea at first what the title was going to be.

What is the message behind your title?

Finding My Sparkle means finding that inner self-love that exudes from the inside out. Other people can’t help but see that “sparkle” shining through.

Can you share 3 takeaways you would like women to take away from your book?

-Don’t let anyone define who are you.

-Don’t be afraid to share your story, you never know who needs to hear it.

-Do whatever it is you want to do. There are no glass ceilings.

At any moment during your writing process did you experience writer’s block, what tips do you have for overcoming it?

I didn’t necessarily have writer’s block but I did have to push through an emotional wall. When I started writing and reflecting I often found myself starting to cry. It brought back so many emotions that I had suppressed, I had to walk away from writing for a few weeks. I pushed through and kept going however because I remembered my “why.” Why I started writing the book in the first place.

Take me through the first moment you held your book in your hands, what did that feel like for you?

When I first saw and held my book it was really an amazing experience – I actually cried. I was also nervous because it was actually getting real that other people would read my story.

What would you say was the most challenging part of your writing process?

The most challenging part of your writing process is simply starting.

– What key tips do you have for marketing your book and getting it out to the masses?

What audience is your book written for?

It’s for anyone who needs to find their sparkle 🙂

More About Outdoorsy Black Women: The organization has chapters in 16 states and has over 6000 members after just 2 years of its existence and is growing every single day.

We had the amazing opportunity of catching up with the founder of this great organization to ask questions about the inspiration and message behind this great event.

How did the Outdoorsy Black Woman Platform come together?

When I decided to start fulltime RV life, I was looking for a community of other Black women like me. We needed a space to be ourselves, explore the outdoors and connect safely. I saw a void and made the decision to start the type of community I wanted and needed.

What has been the mission behind your annual Wine and Waterfalls event?

Although we’re out there having fun, the mission encompasses 2 things; we’re working to provide a safe space for Black women to try camping in ways that are comfortable for them and we are also fostering a space for Black sisterhood. We include outdoor skills classes, led by REI, to make sure that each attendee leaves with valuable information. And we have a full itinerary of exciting activities that allow us to bond. I believe when people feel empowered, they’ll be more inclined to confidently try new things.

What can women expect from this event?

Wine and Waterfalls is an event like no other. This year we’ve included a concert and GINUWINE is headlining, we’ve got a paint party, wine tastings, wellness stations, and so much more.

Who would you say is your ideal attendee?

Our attendees this year range from 23-72. I love that Wine and Waterfalls is something that so many types of Black women can enjoy. Whether you’re coming out for a girl’s trip, with your family or solo and wanting to make new friends, this is the perfect place to do it.

5. How can women register or support this great event?

Ladies can show support and connect with us on OutdoorsyBlackWomen.com. Although tickets for Wine and Waterfalls 2023 were all sold out, but we are taking deposits for Wine and Waterfalls 2024!

What message do you hope women walk away with at the end of the event?

It’s always my goal that the ladies will leave the event feeling freer, healed and like they have a community of sisters they can connect with for life.

What is next for the Outdoorsy Black Women Platform?

So many exciting things are in the works. We’re working to expand out chapters to more states and we have some amazing ideas in store for future events.

She now uses social media to spread knowledge on how to keep it moving without getting stuck in the mess of life.

Note from Glendora:
“I love to say that we only have one life so we must live and not get stuck in the mess of life. We have to expect the mess, acknowledge the mess, then keep it moving.

When exactly did you realize you had a gift for helping people?

What inspired you to go after a calling in counseling?

I discovered my talent when clients started telling me how I changed their lives, and others reported still following my advice because it worked for them. It’s always surreal when it happens, as I’m simply being my authentic self and enjoying socializing with others.

Psychology 101, a class I took in college, sparked my interest in understanding how people think and socialize. The subject matter fascinated me and drew me towards the field of psychology. I have always been a helpful friend, ready to share my resources and lend an ear to those in need of a solution.

Tell us about Dvine Systems GA?

We educate on how to build, scale, and grow in private practice while providing therapeutic services via technology-assisted media. The coaching program sits on the foundation of the VCC Systems (visibility, confidence, and competence in business).

Dvine Systems GA offers therapeutic workshops and comedy shows to provide healing to the community. We aim to help people transition through life with laughter, which we believe is the best medicine.

How can women get involved in your therapy program?

Our therapeutic workshops are open to women. To keep up with the latest details about our “LOL Therapy” shows, please follow us on Eventbrite.com. We accept new patients and both insurance and self-payment options. If you’re interested in our individual counseling services in Georgia and Michigan, please give us a call at (678) 212 – 5146.

Tell us about your event LOL Therapy, what can women expect when attending?

At “LOL THERAPY”, women can expect to have a great time. The audience is usually made up of couples on a date, groups of friends, and family members. Although some people may come alone, our seating arrangements ensure that they don’t feel left out. We seat six people at a table before using another table, creating a more intimate atmosphere for everyone to enjoy the therapeutic journey.

What advice do you have for entrepreneurs afraid of seeking assistance with therapy?

To achieve growth and scalability, it’s important to seek assistance from others. However, sometimes the involvement of certain individuals may lead to judgment or bias. That’s where therapy comes in. It can help you clear your mind and open up new opportunities to live your life to the fullest. As an entrepreneur, taking risks is part of the journey, so why not take a chance on improving your mental health?

What is next for you and your brand at Dvine Systems GA?

My next goal is to find more speaking opportunities that will provide financial blessings, allowing me to focus on sharing positive psychology with a wider audience. Meanwhile, at Dvine Systems GA, our mental and behavioral private practice will continue to serve the community using EMDR and CBT. By summer 2023, we plan to expand our treatment options to include VR therapy. We are committed to finding innovative ways to promote healthy mental living and eradicate the stigma surrounding it. We have changed the name of our business coaching service to B.S.G. in Private Practice. We are enthusiastic about continuing to support mental health professionals in building, scaling, and growing their private practices.

What do you hope women take away from your platform?

My platform aims to encourage women to seek therapy and realize that there are qualified therapists who look like them. I hope to inspire them to be creative and take action to improve their lives. Most importantly, I hope to provide hope that there is still good being done in our world.

What is your definition of a Pretty Woman Who Hustles?

In my opinion, a pretty woman who hustles is someone who exudes beauty in both her personality and appearance, which reflects in her actions. She’s unafraid to seek assistance and acknowledges her limitations. She’s unapologetic and has no regrets. She takes risks and perseveres with determination. Her drive comes from her passion to help others, and she remains grounded and humble. She prioritizes her faith, herself, and her family in that order.

The Pretty Boss Mom: Meet Kelly Cookson

Motherhood is one of the most rewarding and stressful balancing acts. It requires pouring your heart out to a little human being while waking up every morning to make sure they have everything they need.

In this series, we highlight a few of those women who are in the middle of their greatest balancing act; pouring their hearts into their children while pouring their hearts into creating a legacy for their families.

Kelly comes from humble beginnings:

The daughter of two bus drivers, a tradition that went back on both sides of her family, and was already continuing with her brother, as a teenager Kelly didn’t expect to go to university or become an entrepreneur. There was every chance she would follow the same family tradition herself.

Leaving school after mediocre A-level results, she took what she describes as a soul-destroying job in a tax office, where she only lasted 6 months before leaving to work in the local library as a part-time library assistant.

Whilst Kelly’s dad was content being a professional driver, it was her mother who provided the inspiration and confidence to change her life. After getting divorced when Kelly was 8, Mum decided to go back to school to get her A levels, a degree, and then a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, all whilst bringing up Kelly, her younger sister, and then baby half-sister.

“I watched my mum transform herself and set out on this mission to succeed, and it filtered down to me!” says Kelly.

Leaving her dead-end job, Kelly got a place at uni to study aged 23. Alongside her sister, she becomes the first member of her family name to go to university. Kelly thrived, gaining a first-class honors degree in Business Information Management.

After landing a marketing role a week after handing in her final year project, her career went from strength to strength, as she continued to climb the career ladder, becoming a Marketing Manager for an international software company, and earning well. But after having her daughter in 2017 and returning to work part-time, she became aware she was going to need more flexibility and time off when her daughter

eventually started school.

Inspired once again by her mum, she was determined to find a better work/life balance and embrace a way of working that was more aligned with her personality and values. She craved a role where she could spend time with her family, but also the financial rewards of a full-time job.

So, leaving the security of her corporate role, Kelly decided to go freelance, to set up her own company, Cheer Up Marketing in January 2020 and has never looked back.

Kelly refers to this as her ‘Sliding Doors’ moment, as she could clearly see two paths for herself, one of which involved struggling to balance a corporate career, the school run, and holidays, and the other, the path she actually took, leading to career success and a salary to go with it.

Achieving career success Using her marketing and business expertise, she has managed to grow her online marketing business to achieve a 6-figure annual turnover, with more time to herself than she’s ever had.

Kelly puts her success partly down to being a risk taker because she took the leap from her secure job and salary to a life of self-employment with no savings and some debt from living on a part-time salary after maternity leave. This risk-taking has been a consistent theme as Kelly invested in her own development and in the business to scale as quickly as she could. In 2022 she trained as a Positive Psychology Coach, which alongside giving her more mindset tools to support her ambitions, also helps her clients to realize their dreams.

Alongside her husband backing her to follow her dreams, it’s her hero mum who inspired her to make a big change because her confidence in her ability to succeed gave her the push to make bold moves to scale her business quickly. Kelly is the perfect example of how you can break the mold and change your destiny and find your own unique path. Using her own experiences and marketing expertise to help others achieve business success, she is passionate about helping her clients supercharge their businesses. Using scientifically proven positive psychology interventions, she helps them to show up with confidence in their marketing and achieve their business goals. All whilst feeling better than ever!

What is It like to run a successful brand while running your home as a Boss Mom?

It’s exciting! My motivation is my daughter. I started this business to spend more time with her and to be available to take her to and from school every day and be at home during the school holidays. Every time I walk her to school, I feel like I’ve achieved success. I’m extremely grateful that I run this business and don’t have to use childcare.

In terms of running my home, having a successful business means I can finally afford a cleaner! Which is a big help and frees me up to do the money-making tasks in my business.

I don’t think I’ve achieved the perfect work/life balance – I look at it more like an integration. I’m extremely efficient and can get so much done in the pockets of spare time I manage to find.

What has been your biggest challenge in balancing both career and motherhood?

The biggest challenge has been making myself slow down the business side because I’m very ambitious and have great plans for where I’m taking my brand! I constantly come back to my “why” which is my daughter and spending time with her. This helps me to dial things back a bit when I find work is starting to take over more time than it should. It perhaps means I’ve not scaled my revenue as quickly as others but I’ve hit a 6-figure annual turnover by myself just ⅖ years into my business and I only work 20 hours so I’m very happy with where I’m at.

Behind every great woman is a group of other great women pushing her into greatness, who is your circle made up of?

My mum is a constant source of inspiration and encouragement. She reinvented herself in mid-life with 3 young children to look after and she is my cheerleader.

I also have a small number of close female friends who aren’t entrepreneurs themselves but are also ambitious and they inspire me to be the best.

I’ve found business masterminds to be instrumental in helping me push myself outside of my comfort zone to try new things and take my business to the next level. I always earn more money when I’ve invested in business coaching and external support.

What advice do you have for new moms wanting to jump-start their own entrepreneurship journey?

At some point, you are going to have to make the leap from whatever your current situation is into running your own business. It’s a bit like deciding to have a baby – there’s never the perfect time! You’ll likely struggle to do the day job, be a mum and grow your own business alongside all of that – something will have to give. For me, it meant leaving my secure job and salary with zero savings to start my own business. I’ve never looked back.

What does being a Pretty Woman Who Hustles mean to you?

It means I’m completely myself – I don’t have to pretend to be anyone else to succeed in business. It also means I’ve created the time freedom to look after my health and my family as well as being an entrepreneur.

The Pretty Boss Mom: Meet Viv Guy

Motherhood is one of the most rewarding and stressful balancing acts. It requires pouring your heart out to a little human being while waking up every morning to make sure they have everything they need.

In this series, we highlight a few of those women who are in the middle of their greatest balancing act; pouring their hearts into their children while pouring their hearts into creating a legacy for their families.

Viv Guy shows entrepreneurs how to get consistent leads & sales on autopilot, without social media – so they can get fully booked, and stay that way! She is the host of the #1 marketing podcast ‘Marketing Without Social Media’, a public speaker and renowned for her endless energy and
enthusiasm.

Viv uses a unique, sustainable and sophisticated marketing system ‘Clients in 20’ which has seen her clients go from zero to £10k months in just 1 year without organic social media or paid ads.

Viv uses her background of 19 years in business, having set up her first award-winning 7-figure business from scratch at the age of 22; without social media or a website (yep, she says she was “clueless but determined and relentless!”). Learning what it is to grow a successful and profitable business from scratch, not once but three times and her podcast allows her and her guests to share their expertise with her listeners so they can create more freedom in their lives.

Viv’s here to teach business owners how marketing without social media will help them get a better return on investment (ROI) for their time and
energy and why they’ll want to quit social platforms altogether!

A Yorkshire-born northern lass, Viv is passionate about changing the world of work and getting more entrepreneurs working fewer hours and having a better quality of life with balance, boundaries and freedom from the day they start their first business.

She was inspired to change her own business model and marketing strategies after realising that the 60-80 hour weeks she was used to when running her first business weren’t sustainable and certainly no fun! A mother to two daughters, she soon realised she’d have to find a way to set up and run her new business in a LOT fewer hours!

Viv’s here to teach other entrepreneurs how to get leads and sales on autopilot and help them get the biggest return on investment (ROI) for their time and energy.

What is It like to run a successful brand while running your home as a Boss Mom?

The reality is it’s tough. Being a mum is hard work on its own. Throw in working/running a business and your home and it becomes even tougher. That being said it also affords you so much freedom to be present for your family and your kids – To go watch their awards assembly, visit the class when it’s an open day, go to sports day or volunteer on the PTA. As well as being able to create your own financial freedom in the process.

What has been your biggest challenge of balancing both career and motherhood?

Boundaries. In the early days, I sucked. There are times I still suck at honouring my boundaries. When you are a service provider like me who is passionate about helping clients create lives and businesses that give them freedom and security, it can be hard to respect your own boundaries because you’re so keen to help them. Also your own health and well-being. As a mum and woman, we often don’t prioritise ourselves. Building in non-negotiable gym time, walks etc is essential to your own well-being but your CEO mindset too. It keeps your energy up.

Behind every great woman is a group of other great women pushing her into greatness, who is your circle made up of?

I have my biz buddies from group programmes I’ve been on and meet-ups and I found a small few who become my BFFs and who check in regularly. I check in with my accountability buddies twice a week and we voice note each other most days just checking in. We ask to remind each other about the things that we need to stay on top of e.g. running, walking, whatever those habits are that keep us in a positive energy and productive flow. I then invest in masterminds/programmes with other women who are pushing to move forwards to the next step. Being on a journey with others who just ‘get you’ is so powerful and I never feel as connected to friends as I do to my biz chums when we are out for dinner. Not talking about business necessarily, just that we all get the crazy journey that motherhood and entrepreneurship bring.

What advice do you have for new moms wanting to jump-start their own entrepreneurship journey?

Design your business from the start according to the hours you want to work. Don’t go in hustling 60-hour weeks and doing your marketing on your laptop, in bed at 11pm because you think that’s the only way to reach a goal you set yourself. You can achieve greatness in 15-20 hours per week. Set boundaries, get support and a plan from the get-go of how to market your business effectively and build leads consistently. Make lead generation and messaging your number one focus as this is what gets the cash flowing!

What does being a Pretty Woman Who Hustles mean to you?

To me, this means being an amazing woman (because we are. We are in a patriarchal society still so starting a business is next-level womanhood). It means women who are go-getters, determined, drivers and who know what they want!

Meet Author Terri Banner Fitzsimmons

Terri Banner Fitzsimmons is the author, motivational speaker, and best-selling author of 4 books. Her biggest passion is helping women achieve their passion for life, to break free of all the doubts they cling to that stop them from recognizing their worth. She didn’t return to school until she was forty, and with the help of the counselors and professors, she could graduate valedictorian in her master’s Program. She went on to get her teaching degree and a certificate in special education training. She had adopted two teenage boys with fetal alcohol syndrome, so she could understand what the students in her classes needed. She resides near Palm Springs, where she continues writing and counseling women. After the Camp Fire in 2018, which took everything from her, she worked in Medford, Oregon, with special needs, until the pandemic.

In this interview, she tells about her book “Phoenix Rising from the Ashes,” a powerful true story of her survival after Camp Fire in 2018. It is her personal journey from victim to thriver. After she learned she had lost everything in the fire, her home, and her identity, she found an inner strength she never knew she had; she had to move forward. She had to survive. Facing numerous obstacles, she forged ahead, realizing that the person she was before the fire was buried in those ashes. She was transformed by tragedy, arising like the true Phoenix, helping other victims, and counseling them to move ahead with their lives.

First things first, how did we develop an interest in writing?

I was born with a vivid imagination! Even before I could read, I would conjure up imaginary playmates who would accompany me on all sorts of adventures. The thrill of seeing stories develop on paper kept me at my desk for many hours until my father discouraged my writing, stating it was too immature.

When did you realize you had a story the world needed to hear?

All my life, I felt like I was living a peripheral life: I was always on the outside, looking in. Being insecure did not stop me from visualizing myself as someone who would shine as a writer. Being in college at the age of 40 offered me the opportunity to tell my story. I started a club called The RASCALS – Returning Adult SClub and Learning Society – to help other older women overcome their insecurities and succeed in school. I began research on Returning Adults, which became my master’s thesis. I gave my lectures and presentations on my work.

What was the writing process like? Did you come up with your title first and build around it, or did the manuscript come first?

The symbol of ‘Phoenix Rising from the Ashes’ inspired my first book. I was the Phoenix, reborn from the fire in Paradise, California. Who I was before the fire was not who I was when I emerged from it. After the fire, I suffered many nightmares from having to escape the town of Paradise on a school bus with children. The sounds of people screaming, the exploding tanks, and seeing the flames in the distance, ready to engulf us haunted me every night. I wrote down my thoughts in a daily journal, and my counselor suggested I turn my journal into a book as it could help other fire victims. So my journal morphed into a manuscript, telling the story of my move to Paradise, my short time living then, and the fire and its aftermath. The title is my constant reminder of who I have become, a strong woman who chose to be a survivor instead of a victim.

What is the message behind your title?

“Stress is not what happens to us, it is our response to what happens, and our response is something we choose.” Everything in our life is based on perception: How we view life determines how we will feel and act. I can define my experience with the fire and its aftermath as a tragedy from which I never will recover, or I can reframe the experience as one which offered me an opportunity to grow stronger; I had to lose everything to gain everything. Who I was before the fire is buried in the ashes.

Can you share 3 takeaways you would like women to take away from your book?

● It is crucial that we reframe our lives to perceive what happened to us in the past did not make us victims. “I had to spend months trying to regain my identity after the fire, replacing my green card, passport, and transcripts.” Reframed: “After the fire, I became resourceful, buying a laptop the next day and getting all the necessary paperwork to get my documents.” “I am a victim.”Reframed: “I am still alive. I am a survivor.”

●     “You are not alone.” When tragedy strikes, be it the loss of a loved one, a flood, earthquake, or tornado, there are thousands around the world suffering with you. What makes the difference between a survivor and a victim is how one perceives the tragedy. Tragedies allow us to reach inside ourselves and find the inner strength we never knew we had. For months I kept a map that showed where all the survivors of Paradise had relocated. Red dots signified their destinations. It reinforced the knowledge that there were thousands like me striving to build a new life.

● We are what we choose to be. Our life is based on the choices we make. We can choose to be a victim of circumstance, or we can choose to be a survivor. Before we start bemoaning what happens to us, we need to decide how we are going to react to it.

At any moment during your writing process, did you experience writer’s block? What tips do you have for overcoming it?

Because of my own insecurities, I would stop the writing process altogether! I have perhaps fifteen unfinished articles and manuscripts saved on my computer. I still have my father’s words ringing in my ears “You will never be a writer.” But then, something would trigger my imagination – a golden nugget from a movie or a book, and I would be back at the keyboard, outlining a new project. Of course, there would be times when I was stymied when I couldn’t make the words flow, so I would leave my work alone, sometimes for a few weeks. I used to say that I was waiting for the dust to settle, giving my brain a chance to accommodate new ideas! Now that I am almost finished my new book, I am toying with the idea of revisiting my unfinished manuscripts.

All authors experience writer’s block. The key is not to give up and delete our work. Take a break from writing and let your mind relax.

Take me through the first moment you held your book in your hands; what did that feel like for you?

When I first saw the cover of my book, the vibrant phoenix in the middle, I burst into tears as I held it to my chest. Inside that book were my thoughts, my fears, and my memories. I had overcome a lifetime of insecurity to write a book about who I was. I cherish this memory as it was the impetus for me to continue writing.

What would you say was the most challenging part of your writing process?

Writing requires discipline. I have to set a specific time each day to write.

What key tips do you have for marketing your book and getting it out to the masses?

I am naive about the process of writing. Unfortunately, I spent thousands of dollars with one company that promised me the moon. I had many book signings lined up, and then the Pandemic hit. I never had any results with the company, and I do not have the funds to market my books now. I do have a website, and I write articles where I mention my books.

What audience is your book written for?

Young adults to seniors: It is for anyone who has experienced grief or loss in their lives.

From Victom to Victor: Meet Beauty Influencer, Model and Motivational Speaker Tonya Meisenbach

Tonya Meisenbach, better known as Burned Beauty 2018, is a wife, mother of two adult children, luminary, and humanitarian currently living in Atlanta, GA.
Formerly a Paralegal and Realtor, Tonya has always enjoyed helping and elevating others. After being burned over 35% of her upper body and almost losing the battle, nothing has changed, Tonya turned her pain into purpose, and although Tonya’s methodology is different, the end goal remains the same, elevating others.

“My face and upper body all skin grafts, and my determination and spirit all God. ” Tonya

Tonya now uses hair. makeup. tutorials. and social media to help inspire other burn victims in their recovery. She wants all survivors to understand that their wounds will heal, and that with the right mindset, many can and accomplish anything and overcome any obstacle thrown in their path.

Who is Tonya Meisenbach in five words?
Survivor, Role Model, All Heart, Businesswoman, Independent

Can you share the inspiration behind your brand?
I was badly burned in December 2018. I lost my entire face and 35% of my upper body. I suffered third and fourth-degree burns and my entire face, neck, chest, both arms and upper back had to be replaced with skin grafts from my lower body. The loss of my face felt like a loss of part of my identity. I spent 2 1/2 years in the house only going to doctors appointments and then my caretaker told me to go look in the mirror because things had changed. Once I understood what she meant, I decided to let my Facebook friends know where I had been. They had no idea. I made a post and then decided that I would make a video and answer all the questions. That video led to lots of survivors contacting me telling me how inspired they were and how they liked my makeup.

I had literally been sitting on the couch for 2 1/2 years, wondering what I was going to do with the rest of my life because I was not even 50 years old yet. And there in those comments was the answer!

I could do what I’ve always wanted to do, which is charitable work. So I bought a ring light and thought of a name – BurnedBeauty2018 because BurnedBeauty was taken – and by doing these things I recognized my purpose.

I had planned to do makeup and post my thought for the day and create tutorials to help others do their makeup. I still do all those things, but mainly I inspire people to keep going, and I do that with great intention. It wasn’t long before brands started to notice me, and I had my first deal to create a TikTok and it was with L’Oreal.

Everything I was doing until that point was for charity. With that deal, I realized that I could set my personal goals as well.

Burned Beauty 2018, as we know her now, was born.

You have had to overcome several obstacles to get where you are today, can you share what has been your greatest lesson thus far?
There was a moment when I was standing in my foyer and I suddenly had a realization that everything in my life had prepared me for that moment. All of the trials and tribulations: being abandoned at birth and given to my grandmother, being bullied, being treated like a plaything by men, getting married at 22, my first divorce, losing my children to joint custody, and having to fight to get them back, and the list goes on. Every job I’d ever had. My education. My past failures. All of those things were a layer cake that made me someone who could lose her face, her identity on so many levels, and then come back to show her new face in the name of inspiring other women (and men) to recognize what true beauty is and that they can go on regardless of what has happened to them.

What message do you hope women take away from your platform?
we don’t have to meet unrealistic beauty standards, because true beauty really does begin on the inside and it’s not figurative, it is literal. When you have that beauty in your heart, you can see it on your face. And with that beauty comes confidence. And with that confidence comes the ability to do and be anything you want – if you’re also willing to show up for yourself every day and do what’s necessary to achieve your goals. The only thing that can stop us from succeeding is us.

Where do you hope to see your brand next?
And I have a lot of ambitions. I hope to start modeling. Even though I am a curvy woman and I have burns and I just turned 50. My main ambition there is to be a burn survivor in the mainstream modeling world because we are not represented there. I also want to be a TEDx speaker or at least do a standard Ted talk because there’s a lot to be said about the lack of representation of burn survivors in Hollywood and in beauty and fashion campaigns. There are a few survivors doing some of these things, but certainly not enough when you consider how many of us there are. I am also going to write a book, but I’ve waited a while because I want my book to be about what you do after the trauma not just about the trauma itself.

What is your definition of a Pretty Woman who hustles?
I am a pretty woman who hustles. You are pretty women who hustle. A woman who knows her worth and sets goals and achieves them is beautiful and she’s hustling with every goal achieved. She’s okay with living the soft life – after she earns it because showing up for herself every day and getting the things she wants for herself… That’s her flex. She knows that her beauty doesn’t lie on her skin. Her beauty is within and nothing can ever take it away. Her determination is her hustle and nothing can ever take that away either.
