Shade & Sass is a black, female owned company that was launched in January of this year. S&S works with all kinds of small businesses and creatives, from musicians to authors, photographers, models, MUAs, and all other content creators! They even just signed a podcast!

Why is your business a business to watch in 2021?

We’re a female, black-owned versatile agency working with all kinds of small businesses and creatives! We launched two months before the COVID lockdown, succeeded in a pandemic, and we know things will only get better for us in 2021.

What inspired your to start your business?

Our passion for the arts and media. Our friendship/bond. & A cool business name that really motivated us to create something amazing.

How did 2020 change your business? Was it for the better?

We actually launched in January of 2020, got really nervous about COVID, but ended up signing new clients and doing great work for them. The pandemic gave us time to think, plan, and strategize.

What lessons did you learn in your business in 2020?

You have to work hard AND smart. Running your own business is no walk in the park. You will have your good days & bad days. Put in the effort, and the results will come.

What kind of impact do you want your business to leave on your client or customer?

We want our clients to feel safe & like family. We want them satisfied, and we want them to flourish with their creative endeavors.

Do you feel your product or service meets the needs of the market?

Yes! There are so many people out there that need exposure and help building their brands. They need someone to guide them and lead them in the right direction. We’re here for that.

What hurdles did you personally face in getting ready to open your business and how did you overcome them?

We were nervous about building our roster, but when we started to network and really put the time in to market ourselves, everything fell into place. We’ve built a great roster of clients that will only continue to grow in 2021.

When did you realize entrepreneurship was right for you?

We had realized from the time we began working at restaurants and interning for other companies that we wanted to be our own bosses.

Why did you choose entrepreneurship?

Being our own bosses & creating something our own was very important and special to us.

What would you say is your most driving motivation to keep doing what you do?

Our boujee lifestyles and the fact that we don’t have to answer to anyone other than our clients. Helping other creatives makes us feel good and we plan on doing it for a long time.

What are you most excited or passionate about? (In both business and life or both)

We love to travel! We can’t wait to travel the rest of the world, and we’re excited to work with more like-minded, goal oriented people in the future.

What are the goals that you hold personally?

Our goal is to become a big name in entertainment and to create a safe-space for creatives and small businesses to trust with their brands. We’d really like to create unforgettable campaigns and bonds with and for our current and prospective clients.

Did you have any key mentors or people who deeply influenced who you are, what you believe in and what you’re committed to in your work and life? Tell me about them.

Shania: Kerry Washington – an intelligent, black, versatile woman Viola Davis – who came from nothing & is a successful boss bitch Tika Sumpter – the first black girl on gossip girl who actually had a main role and was a communications major living in NYC… she had to drop out because she was poor, became a waitress and in her darkest time landed a role on a soap opera and her career took off

Cierra/Perks: Gabrielle Union – a beautiful, confident black woman who Cierra’s looked up to since Bring it On and her own cheerleading days Shep Gordon – values family, food, and artists & their craft… Cierra’s ultimate inspiration as an artist manager.

Did you have any life-changing experiences that put you on the path that led you to be doing what you’re doing today? Tell me about them.

Yes. Applying to over 3,000 jobs post graduation and being denied by all of them! As well as being overlooked and underestimated by family and peers! These things have motivated us to excel.

Black Love & Partnership with Dr. CaSay Vaughn and DJ Jay Claxton

I had the pleasure of sitting down and speaking with DJ Jay Claxton and his fiance Dr. Casay Vaughn as they spoke on business, love, and partnership. The saying goes, if you love what you do you will never work a day in your life, and DJ Jay and Dr. Casay are the epitome of that. Taking the business and entertainment world by storm, collaborating his fun and social personality with her producing and business skills, they make an exceptional duo.

It is effortless to have a partnership when each person enjoys the role that they play for one another. DJ Jay voiced that he would rather kiss babies, shake hands and entertain on the scene while Dr. Casay prefers the behind the scenes work with managing and producing.

Their relationship started off as business and working together. DJ Jay felt he needed help to get his brand to the next level, then heaven-sent Dr. Casay to the rescue. DJ Jay recalled the memory when he approached Dr. Casay about taking his business to the next level. Dr. Casay was all fire and personality, talkin’ bout some “Are you ready for me to be all up and personal and up in your grill so I can help you?” DJ Jay dutifully agreed, thus beginning their story with one another.

“It wasn’t hard because he already had the talent” Dr. Casay gushed when I asked about the methods to DJ Jay’s continued success. “There wasn’t anything that needed to be done besides the producing work, he had the ideas.”

Both DJ Jay and Dr. Cashay agreed that making the transition from business to love and partnership was seamless. They were friends first, and it was easy to understand and communicate with one another. I asked if there was a need to set up boundaries or separate between work and play, but they both said no. There was no need to set any concrete boundaries because they already formed the bond, they communicated well with one another. Whether at work or home, they are the perfect pair for each other. It’s fate how this match was made in heaven.

The two decided to take their love and business and showcase to the world that love does conquer all. With their strong foundation in love and friendship, they are able to maneuver the entertainment world. The couple wears many hats as they are involved in giving back to the community and providing food for thought to those who are watching. They stated using their platform and being fortunate to give back, help, motivate, and encourage others is what it’s all about.

They are truly an inspiration to the younger generations like myself, to keep grinding. “Dont let the facade of social media make you feel like you are not where you need to be” DJ Jay mentored. He let me know that oftentimes we as a society let the imagery of social media get us down on our luck and make us feel inadequate but we are enough! Just keep grinding and feeding into your craft.

Now even though they seem to have it all together, DJ Jay mentioned that there are challenges when it comes to the entertainment world. It took a lot of work to get to where they are today. DJ Jay stated he battles with MS, and has overcome obstacles of life such as failed relationships, financial woes, life highs, and lows. He said those experiences humbled him, and he learned a lot of lessons, but ultimately they all brought him to where he is today.

What is for you will always be for you and never leave you, and destiny brought these two love birds together for sure. Dr. Casay gushed and mused over DJ Jay’s talents as an artist and being in his DJ element. In the presence of the two, you can sense the genuine love and only applaud them for their time and outlook on life.

Before signing off, I asked them for some advice for couple-preneurs tackling the business world together in which Dr. Casay stated some key tips: Having a strong foundation, taking time for each other, and supporting one another endlessly. Never stop communicating and working with one another through it all; for love does conquer all.

Be sure to check out DJ Jay Claxton and Dr. Casay Vaughn’s Love & Business on Lock podcast where the two talk about love and relationships with other couple-preneurs. Also, stay tuned for their upcoming clothing line FRNCHS- yup, that’s “Franchise” but without the vowels. DJ Jay has some great stuff coming your way, and just know he wouldn’t get anything done without his right-hand woman Dr. Casay helping every step of the way.

We celebrate black love and union this February.

2021 Business to Watch – ManCave Atlanta

Darnika “Nika” Platt is a lifelong entrepreneur and Atlanta tastemaker. As a 35-year-old businesswoman, she manages her life as a business owner, wife, mother, pet owner, and socialite. Nika considers herself to be a small-town girl with big city goals. She was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She left for Atlanta, Georgia in 2004 to expand her life in a new market. While in Atlanta, Nika was not only able to successfully expand her life as an entrepreneur but she also met her husband of six years with whom she shares two children.

During her regularly scheduled visits to the nail salon and day spas, Nika began to converse with some of the men who also frequented the same establishments. These conversations made her realize that men don’t have access to the same facilities that women have, including a one-stop-shop for self-care.

Combining her love for pampering herself with her deep interest in self-care for the mind, body, and soul, she began visualizing the concept of a mancave, which is synonymous with a male-driven space where guys can relax.

In 2017, Nika began the process of building out her vision for what is now known as ManCave Atlanta. ManCave Atlanta was inspired by the television show “Cheers,” where everyone knows your name, and is an upscale men’s spa and event facility located in the Lindbergh neighborhood of Atlanta’s luxurious Buckhead District.

The physical build-out was completed within a year. Among other features, the facility houses multiple suites, including:  manicure and pedicure, massage and facial and a private barbershop.

Nika’s vision is now a reality, one that has amazed every person who has entered the space.

Why is your business a business to watch in 2021?

An upscale men’s spa in Atlanta, the unique twist about ManCave Atlanta is that it was created by a woman.

What inspired your to start your business?

Men didn’t have an adequate equivalent to women to have their self-care needs. I decided to create this space combining the concept of a mancave with the television show “Cheers” where everyone knows your name.

How did 2020 change your business? Was it for the better?

It officially opened and people love it.

What lessons did you learn in your business in 2020?

Since 2020 was the year of COVID-19, my biggest lesson was patience. A lot of businesses were affected and I had to choose the right time to officially open.

What kind of impact do you want your business to leave on your client or customer?

I want them to love the space and see if as a place for them to come relax and network.

Do you feel your product or service meets the needs of the market?

Yes, it’s a place that meets the needs of men and the decor reflects sophisticated men.

What hurdles did you personally face in getting ready to open your business and how did you overcome them?

The biggest hurdle was making sure that the build out was done exactly right.

When did you realize entrepreneurship was right for you?

I’ve always been an entrepreneur. I came from a family of entrepreneurs so it’s always been apart of my life.

Why did you choose entrepreneurship?

I didn’t choose entrepreneurship, it’s always been apart of my life since I come from a family of business owners.

What would you say is your most driving motivation to keep doing what you do?

My family. Coming from a family of entrepreneurs to now having my own I now see how they instilled a lot in me and I want to do the same with my kids.

What are you most excited or passionate about? (In both business and life or both)

I’m mostly excited about self care, physically, mentally and spiritually. I enjoy pampering myself and others.

What are the goals you most want to accomplish in your business?

I simply want to provide spa services to the men of Atlanta and provide them with a space they will love.

Did you have any key mentors or people who deeply influenced who you are, what you believe in and what you’re committed to in your work and life? Tell me about them.

My parents and grandparents are entrepreneurs so I learned a lot from them.

What’s next for you in your business/brand? What can readers look forward to from you?

We’re working on bringing more events and activities to ManCave Atlanta, and bring together partnerships that will be beneficial to our clients.

2021 Business to Watch – The Communication Strategist

Dorothy Enriquez is a third culture kid by way of Belize, Italy, Japan and the US grew up to love fashion, gal pal bonding, learning and leadership. Her written works on confidence, competence and closing the leadership gap in Forbes, Training Industry Magazine, The BOSS Network and Ambition Magazine. Dorothy is known for her effective communication skills, ‘edutaining’ leadership courseware and interactive programs. A 15-year veteran of Corporate America, wielding multiple certifications and degrees, she and her collective partners strive to make transformative development accessible. In 2018 after giving birth to her daughter, Dorothy went full time as a small business owner. A boutique learning and leadership development firm, The Ellevate Collective, formerly known as The Communication Strategist, is dedicated to helping organizations and individuals optimize their leadership so that they are equipped to lead from every seat they sit in.

Why is your business a business to watch in 2021?

I believe my business is the one to watch in 2021 because we are gearing up for the ultimate rebrand as we ramp up with the new vision of transforming the C Suite in the United States. Our vision is to increase female representation in the C Suite by 2%. Our plan is to focus on creating a pipeline to the c suite as well as reducing the lag that happens every time lady leaders transition from role to role at work. It’s time to accelerate!

How did 2020 change your business? Was it for the better?

2020 pushed me to pivot in business. It taught me to be innovative with less and invest to garner more over the long run. I built out the B2C side of my business which didn’t really exist prior to COVID 19 and I also transitioned my business to function fully online. Prior to COVID 19, my business was B2B and 100% face to face. 2020 has pushed me to think strategically, work ON the business just as much as I work IN it.

What lessons did you learn in your business in 2020?

I learned several lessons. I’ll share my top 3. 1. You cannot set goals without strategy, they’ll often be misguided without clear strategic planning. 2. You have to clearly identify what you should work on next in the business pyramid. Ex: You can’t focus on profits if you don’t have enough sales conversion. Focusing on Sales the bottom half of the year was a game changer for my business. 3. You need a pipeline that is triple or quadruple what you plan to make for the quarter. A coach helped me to implement a pipeline that I designed and I was able to make exactly what I hoped to make between Q3 and Q4 this year. Q4 literally ended up being the BEST quarter I have had since starting my business in December 2016.

What kind of impact do you want your business to leave on your client or customer?

I want organizations that I work with to feel like the culture has improved as a result of the work that my company did. They are able to see a shift in how their leaders lead which transform the culture to breed more leaders. I want each organization to feel like they lean more towards purposeful and results driven cultures that value belonging, safety and connectedness in order to maximize their most valuable resource: human capital.

Do you feel your product or service meets the needs of the market?

Absolutely. So often people don’t have access to the leadership development and coaching that they need in order to optimize how they show up. TCS exists to close that gap and create sustained leadership practices that can ascend with the leader as they climb the career ladder.

What hurdles did you personally face in getting ready to open your business and how did you overcome them?

The hurdles I faced were leaving my job without already garnering half of my salary, leaving while pregnant and knowing that I’d need to file for divorce after having the child. These personal hurdles felt insurmountable at times and made me feel like it wasn’t a good idea to go full time. But I truly believed that God was pushing me to bet on myself and trust the process and lean on my personal leadership to get me through that first year in business. It was so tough, but having faith, getting coaching, being resilient and relentless helped me to make it a full year in business full time. I celebrated 2 years full time on August 27th this year. I am blown away by how much I have learned about myself and the ups and downs of being a mompreneur.

When did you realize entrepreneurship was right for you?

I knew entrepreneurship was my jam when I was 10 years old. I was always looking for problems that I could be paid to solve. And I knew if I could solve a problem that resonated with others because they saw it as their problem too…welp! Then I could charge a premium for that.

Why did you choose entrepreneurship?

I believe after 15 years in corporate, entrepreneurship was the only way that I could truly live my purpose ON purpose. I tried to make corporate work for me but it wasn’t designed for me, so I made my own way by betting on me.

What would you say is your most driving motivation to keep doing what you do?

Honestly, my daughter. My mom was an entrepreneur. But not in the way that you and I know it. She honestly could have been the next Vera Wang with the right mindset and coaching. I want my daughter to see that she has choices. She can work for someone or she can be the one who creates the jobs. But she can truly choose. And having one parent that worked for others and one who worked for herself let me know that I, too, had choices.

Did you have any key mentors or people who deeply influenced who you are, what you believe in and what you’re committed to in your work and life?

Tell me about them.My Mom and Dad. Honestly, I have started multiple businesses over the years. First a talk show, then a magazine, then a writing consulting firm…the fact that my parents in some regard are so traditional, I just didn’t think they’d go for it. They really do like to play it safe. So the fact that for all intents and purposes, I was literally doing things that weren’t a guarantee, I thought they would be pushing me to go down the work for others path. But they’ve been so supportive!! Even when I quit my job, filed for divorce AND started my business, they were like: YOU CAN DO THIS! YOU WERE MADE FOR THIS.

My boss Dr. LaGrant was instrumental in so many ways. She supported me by sending me to a transformational leadership program. She supported me doing my business as long as I got my work done. And when it was time for me to depart, she assured me that I was making the right decision because I was built for the entrepreneurial life.

And lastly Anita Goldin, she was my very first leadership coach. She helped me unlock things about myself that I think would still be buried inside were it not for her pushing me. She allowed me to see that I was extremely creative and innovative. She’s the reason I started the talk show. And the talk show is what fostered me being a magazine publisher for almost a decade…and the rest is history!

Did you have any life-changing experiences that put you on the path that led you to be doing what you’re doing today? Tell me about them.

I think the thing that planted the seed was being selected for this ‘secret’ leadership program in undergrad. It was exclusive and only for the top 10% of leaders at the university. I got the tap and found myself in a one year leadership intensive where we learned about so many aspects and facets of leadership. I LOOOOVED IT. Honestly, based on that program, I would have majored in leadership if it had existed at the time. That seed grew over the years, and I believe it led me to right where I am today, helping leaders across the US lead from every seat they sit in. Because, well, that’s the requirement and the non negotiable: you are REQUIRED to lead from every seat you sit in.

What’s next for you in your business/brand? What can readers look forward to from you?

I’m extremely excited about rebranding the firm. We are switching to a collective model with the vision and focus I shared earlier and we are getting ready for an expansion to create a force to be reckoned with at the highest levels of leadership. You can look forward to seeing us share our leadership philosophies, tips, tricks, cheat codes and best practices and non-negotiables to help you accelerate your ascent. We don’t simply want you to survive corporate. We want you to thrive!

Is there anything else you would like to share with me?

I’d love to share the new name with you! You can look forward to us being referred to as The Ellevate Collective. Honestly, I am so proud of the work I have done with my team to prepare for this evolution of how we do leadership and make an impact. Because I believe another non negotiable is that no one ever became a phenomenal leader alone. Ellevate wants to serve as a resource along the lifelong journey of leadership.

2021 Business to Watch – Diversified

Rachel is a conscious social influencer who is passionate about racial equity, Black life, women’s rights, foster care/adoption, and holistic wellness. By profession Rachel is a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion department head within the Tech Sector and Managing Partner- Programming and Relationships, for Diversified, a boutique DEI consulting firm. It is not by coincidence that Rachel’s passion for people and heart for culture has led her to a career that speaks to who she is and what she believes. Through her popular social platforms and various contributor positions, Rachel speaks out against racial injustice and advocates most commonly for the lives of all Black people.

Why is your business a business to watch in 2021?

Diversified is a boutique consulting firm that specializes in employee engagement, corporate programming, and the building of equitable organizations. We believe that understanding and celebrating diversity at work leads to the production of tangible results for employees, consumers, and communities. The heart of diversity is a celebration of what makes each of us unique. Our team of consultants not only bring years of DEI work to the table, but each has a speciality and extensive professional background. From HR, Tech, and Media to Education, Non-Profit Sector, and Sales we are equipped with consultants that actually know your story personally. Our backgrounds are a beautiful reflection of why WE STAND OUT.

What inspired your to start your business?

Being a Black woman in tech, I learned first hand how difficult it can be for women of color specifically to advance in corporate America. I birthed Diversified with two women who had an identical story in a totally different field. We knew that our lived in experiences and our knowledge of how to truly shape equitable culture was something every organization needed. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion should be the heartbeat of every business, I am inspired by the possibilities of a new corporate environment for every underrepresented identity.

What kind of impact do you want your business to leave on your client or customer?

I want my business to influence change not only in the companies or organizations we work with but in the people. This work requires self reflection and inspires growth. I always want the impact of what we do to be carried into the world by every person we are able to guide and partner with.

Do you feel your product or service meets the needs of the market?

Diversified’s services not only meet but exceed the needs of the market. Armed with a variety of experience, we are able to make greater impact as a team.

What would you say is your most driving motivation to keep doing what you do?

My children. As an adoptive mother of 3- I wake up every single day with the intention to do something that will make their paths easier. I want to invoke change that they can feel and see as they grow.

What are you most excited or passionate about? (In both business and life or both)

I am most passionate about impacting Black life in all areas. My life goal is to be a leader that aids in the dismantling of systems of oppression and the building of equity.

What are the goals that you hold personally?

As an organization owned by 3 Black women, it is our goal to create a recognizable name and brand that truly resonates with people everywhere. We would like to build our business past a B2B model and truly influence masses through more than consultation and training. Products that support this work are what we are developing and hope to market soon. Personally I want to continue to build my platform and be a leading voice for the growth and justice of Black people.

Did you have any key mentors or people who deeply influenced who you are, what you believe in and what you’re committed to in your work and life? Tell me about them.

I am deeply influenced by Shirley Chisholm, Maxine Waters, Angela Davis, Angela Rye, and Tamika Mallory. For each of them, I am inspired by their unapologetic and authentic voice. They never back down and always require others to make room for them in their fullness despite any opposition or discomfort. I am also influenced by both of my business partners and friends, Raleshia Brumfield and Ayeshia Toy. We have a beautiful and reciprocal relationship and they both remind me that our purpose is our qualification. I am honored to walk this journey with them and always inspired to show up with and for them.

Did you have any life-changing experiences that put you on the path that led you to be doing what you’re doing today? Tell me about them.

I grew up in the South Suburbs of Chicago. The area I grew up in was considered an affluent and predominantly Black community, however, I was no stranger to the systemic disadvantages that plagued, and continues to plague the inner city of Chicago. As an adult I began to take inventory of my own encounters and realized just how many times I had been faced with racism and even exposed to remnants of systemic oppression within my education. For example, in high school I had a history teacher that re-enacted slavery as a part of a lesson. Simulating the experience of being on a boat by blindfolding us and linking us together with ocean music and narratives in the background. As a kid I didn’t realize just how inappropriate and traumatic this was, which proved to me how deeply ingrained mentailies and ideologies can become for all of us. Recalling experiences like this one fuel me for this work. The truth is racism, discrimination, and prejudice show up no matter where you may live. It takes work to be able to see it, admit it, and change it.

What’s next for you in your business/brand?

What can readers look forward to from you? We are experiencing growth with the partners we are working with, such as Van Jones’ DreamCorps and more.

2021 Business to Watch – Enhance By Nature

Jameelah Shamsiddeen is a native of Harlem, New York and a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Jameelah is a two-time Breast Cancer survivor, who found it necessary to take control of the products she and her family were putting in and on their bodies. She makes organic personal care products for everyone in the family. Her victories against Breast Cancer inspired her entrepreneurship to create Enhanced By Nature. She takes pride in positively benefitting her client’s wellness, beauty, and self-care, while encouraging self-love.

Enhance By Nature

Why is your business a business to watch in 2021?

Enhance By Nature incorporates many superfoods, including matcha green tea, red wine and cactus juice. While food is a vital part of our lives, these in particular have proven health benefits when used topically. The high vitamin and mineral content found in superfoods help the body ward off diseases and keep you healthier.

What inspired your to start your business?

Since being diagnosed with Breast Cancer years ago, I became an advocate for product awareness. As a two-time survivor, I champion head-to-toe wellness with every item found in Enhance By Nature.

How did 2020 change your business? Was it for the better?

2020 has brought about growth and has brought about adapting to the times and doing things differently to achieve better results… Which for me is to get exposure to bring awareness about the importance of using natural and plant-based products.

Was it for the better?

At first, I didn’t view this for the better, but as time goes on, it has been for the better and continues to show me that long term adapting to e-commerce and online marketing will benefit my company, my health, and my energy. Before 2020 my exposure came from me hitting the pavement by doing multiple vending events at minimum twice a week. So energy wise I was burning both sides of the candle.

What lessons did you learn in your business in 2020?

I have learned how important it is to adapt and be able to convert and make the changes necessary; and make them very quickly to keep your business growing both on a financial level and as well its exposure.

What kind of impact do you want your business to leave on your client or customer?

The impact I want my business to leave on my clients is that we all should be more aware of what we put in our hair and on our skin, to start removing as many chemicals from our bodies. Head-to-toe product awareness is very important!

Do you feel your product or service meets the needs of the market?

With an increase in mindfulness when it comes to staying healthy and boosting one’s immunity since the rise of the pandemic, more consumers are choosing organic products.

What hurdles did you personally face in getting ready to open your business and how did you overcome them?

Paperwork was my personal hurdle, when first opening my business. I have learned to schedule a day once a week for paperwork. Another tip was to hire a business tax professional.

What would you say is your most driving motivation to keep doing what you do?

My driving motivation is creativity come to life. Being about to visualize something and seeing it manifest. Also, the clients’ feedback sharing details about how their skin and hair feel healthier, vibrant, and less itchy.

Did you have any key mentors or people who deeply influenced who you are, what you believe in and what you’re committed to in your work and life? Tell me about them.

I do not have any key mentors who I have worked with, however my friends, family, and Carol’s Daughter founder, Lisa Price, have influenced my entrepreneurship.

Did you have any life-changing experiences that put you on the path that led you to be doing what you’re doing today? Tell me about them.

The life-changing experience that put me on the path is that I am a 2-time breast cancer survivor, which put my life in full gear to start removing as many toxic chemicals from my system.

As a fashion enthusiast her goals include making sure her customer service is up to par and making sure she answers her customers promptly, along with creating stylish pieces for everyday wear. As well as she wants to build her brand to be one that people will continue buying from and are able to rave about continuously. The message that Zuri Nova promotes is to never be afraid to start a beautiful new journey even when you’re afraid. Atia has built her brand from the ground up and continues to grow. She’s invested not only her money, but as well as her time into constantly improving her brand and figuring out what the people want when it comes to comfort.

Why is your business a business to watch in 2021?

Zuri Nova is an apparel brand that focuses of providing affordable luxury apparel and accessories for the fashion enthusiast on the go.

What inspired your to start your business?

I’ve always loved fashion, my mother is the girly, girl where I’m a fan of comfort and sneakers. So growing up watching her dress definitely inspired me to combine her style with mine which is the perfect combo for those on the go.

How did 2020 change your business? Was it for the better?

2020 made me boss up and believe in my brand more. With everything going on I found myself slumping and wanting to give up. I had to sit myself down, pray & get back to it because I know God wouldn’t have given me the idea if he didn’t want me to execute the plan. So I just constantly remind myself I’m doing his plan and I can’t disappoint him nor myself. Once you remember your why, everything else just flows.

What lessons did you learn in your business in 2020?

Stay on your A-game! As a woman, working with primarily men manufactures, if you don’t know the ends and outs of your business some people will try to run all over you.

What kind of impact do you want your business to leave on your client or customer?

I want people to say they felt stylish, comfortable and confident wearing Zuri Nova.

Do you feel your product or service meets the needs of the market?

I do because living in the city, we’re always on go mode and don’t always want to dress up. We want to “throw on” something stylish and quick to put together for that let’s say 6pm meeting etc.

What hurdles did you personally face in getting ready to open your business and how did you overcome them?

I would definitely say I had to learn how to get out my own way. It’s still a battle but with my why I started I know, not even myself will be able to stop me!

When did you realize entrepreneurship was right for you?

I was ALWAYS ready to quit my job soon as I woke up in the mornings!

Why did you choose entrepreneurship?

I feel like if I’m willing to clock into a 9-5 and work on someone else’s dream, then why can’t I bet on myself. Not saying a 9-5 is bad because it’s not, it definitely funds your business or businesses to get you to where you want to be. I still work a 9-5, but soon as I clock out I’m working on my brand. Entrepreneurship isn’t all fresh smelling flowers either so I don’t want to make it seem like that, but I will say it’s not for the weak nor lazy. It definitely takes dedication.

What would you say is your most driving motivation to keep doing what you do?

God and my mother.

What are you most excited or passionate about?

I’m excited to see my brand grow, it’s amazing to me you can sketch up an idea on paper and then boom, your idea came to light.

What are the goals you most want to accomplish in your business? What are the goals that you hold personally?

My goals are networking more, possibly collaborating with some influencers, just getting the word out there. My goals I hold personally is to get my 5 bedroom 5 bathroom home that I’ll consider my family house for family get togethers. I also just want to take care of my mom, long as she’s good I have everything I need!

Did you have any key mentors or people who deeply influenced who you are, what you believe in and what you’re committed to in your work and life?

Tell me about them.I didn’t have any mentors like that, I know I’ve mentioned my mama so many times but she truly inspires me. She taught me how to be strong, dependent, and to go after everything I want. She taught me to hold onto God’s word because even when people on earth will leave or fail me, God’s word stands true. My mama is amazing, she’s the reason this next season I refuse to give up because she’s sacrificed so much for me & did her absolute best to give me the best. I see it as, it’s my turn to give her the best.

Did you have any life-changing experiences that put you on the path that led you to be doing what you’re doing today?

Tell me about them.I went through bad relationships after relationships that caused me to be insecure and not see my worth. You get so used to a man telling you one thing, you get programmed into believing it. I had to pray myself out of that mindset it’s still something I battle with, but Zuri Nova means, beautiful new and that’s how I feel about my journey.

What can readers look forward to from you?

I plan on getting Zuri Nova out there more and just connect with people to make them aware of the brand and the vision I have for it. The readers can just follow me because it’s honestly no telling where God is about to take me and my business, I just know it’s going to be something I’ve never imagined possible.

Ambitious Boss Babe Irene Eclavea Talks on her Savvy Business Venture ‘Elevate DragonFly’

Infusing her music artistry, fervent ambition with the positive inspiration she draws from her faith, Irene Eclavea is a shining testimony of the commitment it takes to pursue one’s dreams and goals and the utmost desire that comes from serving a higher purpose than your own. Her journey from church choir singer to a variety of professions in the service industry and as an entrepreneur was anything but predictable and she doesn’t take her recent success for anything less than a blessing from many years of dedication and perseverance. As a lifelong learner in the pursuit of knowledge, Irene is a Renaissance woman. Accomplished in both the arts and sciences, Irene is a registered dental assistant, licensed vocational nurse, licensed in property and casualty insurance, a high school teacher and adult instructor, and more. But it doesn’t stop there. She is also the president of the network consulting firm, Elevate DragonFly. With a plethora of professions, Irene believes that “once you reach a level where you feel it’s time for growth, there’s no reason for one to just stop there. Why not do everything we always thought we can do?”

Experiencing and overcoming challenging obstacles of life, Irene knew that there was more to the four walls that surrounded her. Singing in the ministry for about 15 years taught her to apply scriptures into reality; learning to “let go and let God” all in the faith and strength provided by God. For Irene, the entertainment industry was career driven first. Gathering all her knowledge and skills from her professions, she applied it into the influence of her networking business. Invited to attend the BET awards, Irene experienced her first few seconds of fame on TV. What “felt like heaven on earth”, as she describes, she was surrounded by amazing talents such as Blueface and Rihanna. Feeling like she could “breathe for the first time” ignited her journey of what we know as Elevate DragonFly today. Being born the Year of the Dragon is a part of Irene’s inspiration for the brand name. The design of the dragonfly intertwined with a flower but allowing the dragonfly itself to elevate is related to their mission: to elevate all of God’s people at the same time. Irene explains “with one, we fall and as a colony we rise. It’s about what the people of heaven’s wealth has given [me] and the relationships of everybody to work together and everybody rise. And with elevate, it’s just that. It’s about leading by faith.” Her goal as a network producer is to build strong, ever-lasting connections and mutually beneficial, strategic partnerships for people to network together. One of her many projects focuses on holding conferences on women empowerment.

“People are going to be People”

I don’t just see people; I see the spirits in people.  Meaning, in every sense of the word, I only want to see the good in them. The gifts they hold, their aspirations, their dreams, their desire to succeed~ Irene

Patrice Rivers was able to catch up with Irene to sit and talk to her about her blooming and inspirational journey in business.

Patrice: What makes you a pretty woman that hustles?

Irene: Throughout my journey, I realized as children, we believed that anything was possible. If we wanted to become a superstar, then naturally, without fear, we become who we envision ourselves to be. As adults the world tells us to stay in our lanes. With that being said, for me, what makes a pretty woman that hustles, is one without limits.   Moving from one project to the next, executing the plans, and planting the seeds to allow all that is envisioned to become a reality, each plan, a perfect piece of the puzzle.  As I connect the pieces, “the pretty woman that hustles,” reaches for the next level of opportunity in each gifted career, with excellence, and carry out the plans that arise, to reach the goal of success.

Patrice: How did your journey in business begin?

Irene: “Be Careful What You Ask For, Because You May Just Get It.”

One day, I was working as a nurse at one of the most prestigious hospitals in Southern California.  I had my life set.  I was newly married for the second time, had the fairytale wedding of my dreams, successfully blended the lives of our six children, sang with a Praise and Worship Ministry, and was on my third successful professional career.

I was set, as a full-time employee, with a 401K, vacation time, sick time, PTO, childcare options, and every employee perk imaginable. My morning started the same every day, Monday – Friday. Coffee, cubicle, patient work-ups, messages, immunization schedules, and occasional monthly meetings.  Five years of the same routine, until one day, I stared at the four walls of my station cubicle and said “GOD this can’t be it.  This can’t be it.  How do I minister to your people, if I am stuck behind these four walls? It doesn’t make sense. What you have planned for me, doesn’t make sense.”

Shortly after, I received the dreaded pink slip, and was asked to leave the premises, without an invitation to return. That is when my journey began.  The Leap of Faith was given to me as a gift, based on my infinite question. Ready or not, I accepted my fate. And, learned how to strategically apply, every job, every lesson, and every professional nugget, learned throughout my multiple career experiences and professions, into my own company. That was how Elevate DragonFly was born.

Patrice: As a business owner, what challenges did you face along the way?

Irene: “People are going to be People”

I don’t just see people; I see the spirits in people.  Meaning, in every sense of the word, I only want to see the good in them. The gifts they hold, their aspirations, their dreams, their desire to succeed.   Unfortunately, one’s desire to knowingly or unknowingly, want to continue to repeat the same cycle, becomes evident once the momentum of each project begins.   And since, personally, as well as colleagues I work with today, I do not believe in employees, but practice under the realm of partnerships. Juggling with the emotions can become challenging, leaving me to say “Sometimes, people are going to be people, it’s not their fault.”

Patrice: Tell us a little bit more about your business and what does it entail.

Irene: Elevate DragonFly is a network consulting firm that is set up to help entrepreneurs and businesses through strategic partnerships that utilize resources throughout the nation to develop their knowledge, financial stability, and company operations so that the businesses involved will strive and thrive.

Patrice: How do you balance your work life, personal life, and business life all at the same time?

Irene: Since I have been in many different professions throughout my life, I have had a lot of people come and go. I make sure that I only mix business with pleasure when needed . I do not have anyone from work in my personal business or life. Anyone that is in my corner, I make sure that they are trustworthy and reliable so that we can all grow together. I make sure that I keep God at the forefront of everything that I do making sure to always seek God with any decisions that I make before I make them. I learn from every mistake that I have made or will make so I will not have to repeat the lessons over again.

Patrice: Do you find that to be a challenge for you?

Irene: There are times that I find it to be a challenge because I want to help everyone, and I want everyone to succeed. However, I have learned that you can only help those that want to help themselves and a lot of people are comfortable with clocking in to a 9 to 5 job daily, that is one of the reasons that I keep my work life separate. A lot of people do not see the vision and that is ok. I have learned that I have to keep moving in the direction of the vision that God has given me and work with what comes when it comes.

Patrice: Where do you see your business in five years?

Irene: In 5 years, I see Elevate DragonFly being a franchised business and helping women and men around the world to be the best version of themselves.

Patrice: What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a business owner/entrepreneur?

Irene: To everyone that wants to become a business owner/entrepreneur I would tell them “NEVER give up on your dreams no matter how long it takes, no matter how many ideas you have, no matter what, keep doing it until you find the right one. God will always help you on your journey. If He did it for me, He will definitely do it for you. Have faith and put Him first and He will direct your path. My favorite verse in Habakkuk 2:2 (NKJV) states “Then the Lord answered me and said: “Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it.” Make sure that you write your vision and make a plan and stick to it step by step and if you get off track a little bit, that is ok, you will find your way back.

Patrice: Tell the readers about your new radio show, Elevate Doing Me.

Irene: Elevate Doing Me was founded by my former business partner, Mahonale Waters. This is an entity of Elevate DragonFly that is set to help young girls and young ladies to become the women that God has designed them to be. It is an etiquette class as well as it teaches them how to dress. It also helps them to learn how to manage their emotions and live a life that they would be happy to live when they are an adult.

Patrice: What is next for you and your business for the brand-new year?

Irene: There are major things that are already in motion, and more people will be blessed and be able to benefit from the vision of Elevate DragonFly through the partnerships that are being set up now.
